Venus pulls Through Tough First Round Match At Wimbledon
Defending Wimbledon ladies singles champion Venus Williams pulled through a hard fought first round match against British woman Naomi Cavaday. I am a major Venus fan but I am also nervous whenever Venus plays I don’t know what she’s going to do? Whenever I watch Venus I must admit I worry. I wonder if Venus is mentally prepared and ready to battle? I made myself a cup of herbal tea to calm my nerves. The first set was extremely well played and Cavaday was serious.
Cavaday came out firing blasting winners and broke Venus serve to zoom to a 3-2 lead. Venus woke up held her nerve to break back for 3-3. Venus finally got the lead 4-3 she had two break points at 15-40 to go ahead 5-3 but blew her opportunities. Cavaday is very feisty and she played brilliantly she was not nervous at all against Venus. Venus started to serve better and she blasted a few serves at 125 MPH so I felt better. Once Venus got her serve going I knew she would get through this match.
Venus and Cavaday both continued to hold serve until the tiebreaker 6-6. I must admit Venus was very lucky due to Cavaday’s lack of experience she was able to pull through the first set 7-6. The ESPN 2 commentators Mary Joe Fernandez and Dick Enberg said the British media have blasted Cavaday for being overweight. I must admit Cavaday is an athlete and the British press criticism is fair. Yes Cavaday is only nineteen years old but she is also a professional athlete. Cavaday is not giving 110% commitment to tennis. Cavaday has a lot of game but she needs to get into better physical shape.
The second set was typical Venus she blasted Cavaday 6-1 in the second set due to the fact Cavaday was tired she simply wasn’t fit enough. Venus has too much firepower and too much game and she swept through the rest of the match. I think Venus played well to a certain extent but I felt she was being a bit defensive and perhaps a bit nervous. I honestly think Venus should of won the match easier but credit to Cavaday for not being afraid of Venus and believing she had a chance to win.
Of course Venus was going to win the match anyway. I am very impressed with Cavaday’s serve and groundstrokes she is clearly very talented. I think it is such a shame that Cavaday doesn’ t have the motivation to lose the weight. I know from personal experience it is tough to be overweight but I looked inside myself decided I didn’t want to be heavy anymore. I went to gym and I worked out. Losing weight is a personal choice everyone has to make for himself or herself. I feel so much better and I have more self esteem now that I lost the weight.
Also, I think Cavaday should be more motivated about the money the potential for success. Cavaday could be top fifty material maybe even higher she has serious weapons but she is the one that is blocking her own success. Cavaday for people that remember also held two match points against Martina Hingis at Wimbledon last year. I cannot believe Cavaday is still overweight. I hope someone can talk to Cavaday and help her realize if she wants to become a successful tennis player she has to be fit. Also Cavaday should think about her health she would feel a lot better too if she was fitter it would help her confidence and self esteem.
Weight Loss Update: I Lost Eleven Pounds In The Past Two Months!!!
Today I had a doctor’s appointment so I was a bit nervous. I haven’t bothered to go on the scale because I was so scared for a long time. For the longest time I have been terrified about checking my weight because I just stand thinking about possibly gaining weight. The unknown is better for me because I can relax a bit and just workout without trying to focus on numbers.
I was stunned when my doctor told me since April 2008 I have lost eleven pounds! I was worried for no reason at all I am definitely losing weight at the same pace as earlier in the year.
I thought I had lost only between three to six pounds but I am so thrilled! My doctor also informed me that I now weight 194 pounds. I started to work out in December 2007 and now I have lost forty one pounds in six months! I am cognizant of the fact I am average height I am only five feet eleven inches tall. I have broad shoulders so although weighing 194 sounds like a lot for me that’s actually very good. I definitely much fitter now and lighter. I don’t feel tired during the afternoon and I have much more energy.
My doctor says he is proud of me for sticking with my weight loss program. I actually do feel really good. I feel like I have more self confidence and esteem. I usually have issues with my body image and self esteem but today I feel really good. I am a work in progress. There are still times when I hate myself and I refuse to look into the mirror. There are still moments when I want to destroy the mirror with my fists and smash the glass into a billion pieces. I still wish I looked perfect but I guess I just got to keep on trying. I still don’t have the rock hard abs or the perfect body.
I worked out every single day since last week Monday so today I have decided not to workout. However, tomorrow I will back on the treadmill, lifting weights, completing push ups, sit ups, and leg curls. The important thing I have to remember is just to keep it up. I also have to remember to keep on eating rice cakes, oatmeal, continue to cut down on my sugar intake, and stay away from salt. I must confess I still have a weakness for ginger ale! I love ginger ale but I also realize it is important to live a little and moderation is the key.
Any Advice On How To Lose Weight Faster?
Since I started working out in December 2007 everyone already knows I have lost over thirty pounds. Obviously I see a dramatic difference in my appearance but I am still not thrilled. I lost a lot of weight between December 2007 to April 2008 but now suddenly the weight isn’t coming off fast enough. What am I doing wrong? I read labels all the time at the supermarket.
I remember to count calories and write down everything I am eating. I recall reading a book and one of the most important aspects of weight loss is recording your food intake. Perhaps, I should stop going to restaurants? Maybe I need to return to an extremely strict diet? I also don’t eat at night anymore after 8:00pm.I don’t drink coffee I only drink tea. I do drink ginger ale maybe I need to give that up and just drink water all the time?
I have noticed since May 2008 I am only losing three pounds per month. What the hell is going on? I work out so hard I try to watch my food intake and I feel like I am stagnant. Does anyone know about any new nutrition books that I can buy? I have been thinking about laxatives do they work?
Does anyone know anything about the new fad diets or new ways to lose weight really fast? I am a bit unsatisfied. Everyone is telling me “Orville you look great” or “wow Orville you have lost a lot of weight.”
However, when I look in the mirror I only see my imperfections. I am getting better I can actually look at myself in the mirror and not want to smash the mirror into one million pieces. I can glance at my reflection and not feel like screaming at the top of my lungs. I recall late last year I hated looking in the mirror because I just wanted to cry. I even had ideas about suicidal ideation.
I simply hated my body this disgusting organism the extra flesh, the love handles, the excessive skin. I felt like vomiting when I looked in the mirror all I saw was ugliness and despair.
I feel like my face isn’t thin enough. I also don’t have rock hard abs, I don’t have the perfect body either. What is wrong with me? What am I doing wrong? I am only five feet eleven so I am average height. I also have broad shoulders as well.
I wonder what I would look like if I did weight 150 pounds again? I am currently around 205 pounds I might be little bit less because I refuse to go the scale anymore. I am so pissed off about this. Should I starve myself? Stop eating breakfast? Workout in the morning or evening? Any advice? I need help!!!
One thing I notice I don’t have that rail thin look the kind of look when I can actually see my ribs poking through my flesh. I remember ten years ago I was so skinny I weighed between 150 and 160 pounds. Now I am older and my metabolism has slowed down a bit.
I am starting to think maybe I need to go on another crash diet because I am committed to the intense exercise program I am on. Maybe I need to work out twice a day or something? I don’t know but I just want to be super skinny and really really thin. I think I am going to have to start eating rice cakes again, oatmeal, and really low calorie and low fat food. It is so hard for me to stick to a strict diet but I think this time I have to do it.
Weight Loss Update I Lost 30 Pounds In Four Months Still Not Extremely Thin
I had a doctor’s appointment last week Thursday and I learned I have lost 30 pounds in four months. The doctor says I currently weight 205 pounds. I am not sure I will ever weight 150 pounds again like ten years ago. I remember I was so young, so skinny, so rail thin, I could see my ribs poking through my skin. I also have a problem with binge eating.
Sometimes I was so depressed and sad I quietly left the house in the middle of the night and ran to the corner store. Next, I bought potato chips, chocolate bars, candy, and devoured everything because I felt empty inside about my life not because I was hungry. I wasn’t hungry I was trying to fill a void in my life with food. I soon realized I had a food addiction. Sometimes because I was lazy I didn’t bother going to the supermarket I just ordered an entire pizza and ate it. I passed out after eating the entire pizza other times I wanted to slit my wrists with shaving blades because I hated myself so much I wanted to die.
Next, I passed out waking up wishing I was dead. I hated looking in the mirror looking at my face I cried a lot about my weight. I still cry about my weight sometimes because I am still frustrated. I don’t think I am ever going to have the perfect body, the toned thin legs, the strong thighs, the rock hard abs, the big muscles, thin waist, or shiny perfect skin.
I have received a lot of complements on my body from men but sometimes I don’t believe it. First off, I question if whether the men that give me complements really like me or just want to get into my pants? I have always felt insecure about my body. I still see myself as the depressed overweight man that thinks about committing suicide.
I have broad shoulders and my upper chest, abdomen, and thighs, has slimmed down considerably. Now I am going to talk about an issue any man that has battled with weight loss can understand. My man boobs are just about gone. When I was overweight I actually had a chest yes I admit this!
I am a man of average height I am five feet eleven inches tall. I definitely feel a lot better due to the hard work. I can’t believe I have avoided fast food joints such as McDonalds, and Burger King for the past four months! I started working out on December 4th 2007 and I workout at least two to four times a week for forty to fifty minutes. Sometimes I will exercise for fifty minutes but other times I will exercise for forty minutes. There are a few times I worked out five and six times a week. The only week I didn’t workout was when I was in Jamaica earlier this year for my grandfather’s funeral.
I remember when I was twenty years old I could eat anything I desired and not gain a pound. Now I read labels and make sure I count calories all the time. I also drink lots of water. I decreased my sugar intake and try to stay away from soda drinks. The problem is the food I eat is kind of bland and boring. I eat a lot of rice cakes and drink water. When I am not home I eat whole wheat submarines because I can’t think of anything else healthy to eat. I get really scared about food I become frightened that I will gain all the weight back. I don’t want to be heavy again. The fear fuels the fire and pushes me to workout even harder.
My doctor is pleased with my weight loss and I feel good about my commitment to an intense exercise regime. However, I am still not completely satisfied. I feel like I have reached a plateau. From February 2008 to April 3rd 2008 I have only lost six pounds in the past two months! I am so pissed! I workout so hard I try to watch my diet, count calories, and I only lost six friggin pounds in the past two months! I always make sure that I don’t eat past eight in the evening.
I am much slimmer now it feels good to visit the store and pick up a size 34 or 36 men’s pair of jeans and slip it on. I definitely have more energy and I don’t feel tired or lethargic during the day. My face is much slimmer and my body is becoming more defined. I think I need to buy myself a jump rope or something or some weights? Maybe when the weather gets a little better in the Toronto area I will play tennis and start jogging. I do lift a little bit of weights after the cardiovascular exercise. Does anyone have any advice on how to lose weight really fast? I know I am on the right track but I just want to lose the weight even faster now.
Book Review: Small Changes Big Results A Twelve Week Action Plan For A Better Life
Let me tell you dear readers after a year of lying to myself about feeling tired and lacking energy I realized I had to confront my fears. During my life on this planet I have always had a love hate relationship with my body. I know how to lose weight but the struggle I have is keeping the weight off. I remember when I was young in my mid twenties a few years ago and I could eat anything I desired and not gain a pound.
I am an emotional eater when I feel depressed I eat, when I am lonely I eat, when I feel sad I eat. I definitely don’t want to be in the situation where my health is compromised. The quandary is I love food I love to eat. The problem was for the longest time I didn’t know when to stop.
I remember when I was a kid in the 1980s I used to watch Golden Girls all the time and this is when I fell in love with cheesecake. I know it sounds funny but I remember watching Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, and Sophia say “I’ll get the cheesecake” . Sometimes I imagined I was sitting at the kitchen table with the Golden Girls and eating a slice of cheesecake. It was so exciting seeing the Golden Girls eat cheesecake I told myself I simply had to have some! I just love cheesecake but I also realize it can pack on the pounds. I mean does low calorie or low fat cheesecake actually exist?
I realized I not only had internal issues but also external issues. I dreaded looking in the mirror and seeing how much weight I had gained in the past year. Instead of waiting until 2008 to start exercising again I decided in early December 2007 to begin my exercise program. So for over the past month I have been working out and now I’m starting to get sick of it. One thing my friend told me on the phone the other day is that I have a tendency to give up when things get tough. It is true I realize this is one of my main weakness. I chicken out if life gets hard or if it will take a while to reach a goal.
Ever since December 4th 2007 I have been exercising at least four to six times a week. I started off working out for twenty five minutes and now I have increased the intensity to thirty five minutes on the treadmill. I also lift some weights. I have broad shoulders and I remember even when I was young I never was a thin person. I don’t know if I will reach 150 pounds I used to be that thin around ten years ago. The smallest I have ever been in the past five years was around 170 or 175 pounds. I am not a tall man in fact I am average height. I am five feet eleven inches tall so I am not a tall person.
Last month I began reading a book called “Small Changes Big Results” by Ellie Krieger. One section of the book I liked was when Krieger says to write a “dear me letter.” A “dear me letter” is a letter you write to yourself discussing the issues you have with your body image, food, and the goals you want out of life. Krieger’s opinion is that you need good mental health to balance the physical exercise.
Krieger is a dietitian and her book is very well written and also makes a lot of common sense. Krieger says to start a food and exercise diary. A food and exercise diary is really simple it can be a notepad or just a journal. You have to track your progress to see how many times you workout during the week and also the food you are eating. You can pick up and notice patterns that are either helpful or harmful. Krieger doesn’t say to stop cold turkey completely because that won’t work. All Krieger is saying is eat the right foods and cut down on the bad foods. Krieger isn’t a drill sergent and her writing is not patronizing or pretentious either.
Krieger is very realistic she says the problem people have with exercise isn’t the motivation but keeping up with the cardio workouts. I love this advice because I notice when I write down the specific days and times I have exercised that it motivates me. I am now counting calories and reading labels. I have been working out for a month and I do see progress but I am still working on reaching my goal. I definitely see a difference I have lost weight and I have a long way to go.
I don’t eat fast food anymore I also realize that too much starch and potatoes are poison. I am eating more fruits and vegetables as well. I think the struggle I have is and I know this will sound foolish is I didn’t know exactly what to eat? I just eat whatever I want. My metabolism has changed and now I have to modify my eating habits. Krieger’s book makes an excellent argument that I have to learn to train myself to only eat when I am hungry and to stop when I have eaten enough food.
Sex Tourism and Male Prostitution: European Women Travel to Africa In Search Of Young African Men For Sex
Reuters published a very interesting article that caught my attention today, it is about white women traveling to the third world chasing black men for sex. The piece is about old rich European women most likely from the United Kingdom traveling to Africa, Caribbean, Latin America, in search of big black cock.
It is well known, the racist and sexist stereotype is black men like “rough sex” and this is a sexual thrill for sheltered middle class white women.
The white women do not “respect” these young black males they just see them as sexual conquests people they can dispose and exploit for their sexual pleasure.
The media are so disingenuous! If white women want to have sex with black men, then more power to them. However, let’s just be honest about sex tourism it exists for men and women. Sex tourism is not just a category for male tourists.
Notice the double standards in the mainstream media, in relation to sex tourism!
Sex tourism is not just “specific” to just “one gender”, yet the Occidental media has always framed this as a male only domain. We all have watched the documentaries about European or North American men traveling to Asia, Africa, or South America in search of young women for sex. Female sex tourism has gone on for decades yet now the mainstream media is finally focusing on the other side of sex tourism.
Why don’t the European women travel to India, China, South Korea, Japan, Nepal, Iran, Israel, Syria, or Jordan for sex? Why can’t white women date black men freely in the UK? Is interracial sex still a social taboo? It appears to be so!
Why do some white women make a decision to travel thousand of miles south to Africa, Latin America, or the Caribbean? What is the difference between Asian men and black men? I don’t read articles about white women traveling to China or Japan searching for Asian young men. What is so special about young African men?
The Reuters article discusses British women vacationing in Kenya in search of the big black penis. Have you heard about this trend? I bet you haven’t? I also believe some “feminists” are probably involved in sex tourism as well because they view it as “female empowerment”. It is the classic white heterosexual female victimhood. It is the classic attempts by some white heterosexual women utilizing their “gender” to downplay their racist and sexist views of young black male sexuality.
So here you have a bunch of hypocritical racist and misandrist feminists that will bash the male gender that engage in heterosexual sex tourism. However, when mainstream feminists engage in sex tourism and exploit young African men they suddenly are silent about their own bigotry and prejudices. It’s like talk about throwing stones in glass houses.
The rich Occidental women have egos as well they want to feel attractive and sexy. Society has consistently bashed European or North American men that engage in sex tourism yet the media let women off the hook? I think its a total double standard. The European women also want to feel “hot” since they cannot “attract” young white men in the UK or Europe they travel to a foreign destination to feel powerful and in control. It’s also well-known in Africa “whiteness” is viewed as a social signifier of power, money, and dominance. The European women feel compelled to travel to Africa in search of young black men because the power dynamics are in their favour.
It’s interesting, because in feminist circles the trend is always about women being the victims of sex tourism and that women are exploited. The feminists act as though women cannot be misandrist, racist, and sexist. The European women travel to Africa for sex are indeed sexist and racist because they view the black men as sex objects for white heterosexual female desire. The black men are not depicted as “equals”.
Also, this isn’t about love this is about bunch of old ladies that want quick and easy sexual gratification while taking advantage of poor young African men in the process. Let’s not dress this up as some kind of romantic tale this is clear and obvious misandry. However, the Reuters article makes it clear that Kenya’s tourism industry is not happy about this new “image of the country” as a sex tourism magnet.
Now European women have joined in seeking young black men in Africa for sex. There is no age limit to how far these western women will go to fulfill their sexual desires. You have to wonder? Aren’t there young white or black European men available for these women? So why the need to travel thousands of miles to Africa for a sexual encounter?
It’s obvious that sex tourism is “easier” for the European women to not only to have the sexual encounters with young African men but also to fulfill their “African sex fantasy”. After the sex, the European women can travel back to Europe or North America and talk to their girlfriends about their “amazing” sexual encounters on the “dark continent”.
I think more research needs to take place in this arena. Why don’t the feminists discuss this perspective? Or do feminists not want to discuss sex tourism from a female perspective because they fear it will “place” white western women in a negative light? Aren’t these poor young black men here being exploited as well?
The American author Terry McMillan, she is most famous black western woman that was involved in sex tourism. McMillan’s so-called “love affair” with her ex husband Jonathan Plummer started out as sex tourism. The western media attempted to make McMillan appear “empowered” that she traveled to Jamaica to “liberate” herself. The truth is Terry McMillan “traveled” to Jamaica in search of the Big Black Foreign Cock. Terry didn’t want to have sex with an African-American man she wanted to have sex with a foreign black man “outside” of the United States.
Let’s be real and honest here, McMillan went on vacation in Jamaica specifically to seek out a young black man for sex. McMillan basically “purchased” a young Jamaican man Jonathan Plummer brought her “product” back to the good old United States. Soon Terry’s husband became her sex slave. I think McMillan and her marketing team were aware of how to “spin” the fairy tale about how she fell in love with her much younger husband.
One of the reasons McMillan married Plummer because she was cognizant of the negative image of the sex tourism factor. The residue of the social stigma of an older woman searching for sex in the Caribbean was probably on her mind and she had books to sell. Jonathan was only in his early twenties when he met McMillan he was young and naive. Of course he jumped at the opportunity to leave poverty behind in Jamaica for a new life in America. Although McMillan attempted to dress up her sex tourism experience as a “love affair” I’m not buying it.
My perspective is, that McMillan and Plummer had an “agreement” about their so called relationship. McMillan wanted a young black man she could “control” and have sex with. Jonathan was basically a sex slave for Terry he had no say. Terry didn’t want Jonathan to have new friends or new experiences. Terry also used Jonathan as her “product” to help sell her “books” and her “brand”. McMillan’s relationship was framed as a new form of “feminism”.
I don’t view someone exploiting someone else as “feminism” yet the feminist community sure did. Oprah had Terry and Jonathan on her show and Terry paraded her husband as though he wasn’t even a person he was just a human vibrator toy she bought in the Caribbean. Terry was much older, more experienced, she had the financial resources and Jonathan all he had been his youth. Terry also made sure they had separate bank accounts. After being married for a while, Jonathan he grew up he wanted new life experiences and now Terry McMillan is “angry” that her much younger husband has left her. Terry was the one that got screwed in the end because she thought she could exploit Jonathan forever. Terry’s just bitter that her younger husband got sick of her. Is it liberating in feminist circles to exploit young black men just for sex?
Plummer wanted an opportunity for “freedom” in America. Plummer and McMillan used each other their relationship was basically a “transaction”. How could McMillan and Plummer just “fall in love” so quickly and she brings Jonathan back to the United States? I do not believe a word Terry says because she got a best selling novel and movie “Stella Got Her Groove Back” out of her sex tourism experience. Terry used her husband to get rich and now she doesn’t want to provide her ex husband with compensation even though he was the fuel to her so-called “best-selling” romance novel.
I also find it interesting the North American media had to present the “May/December love angle” about McMillan and Plummer’s relationship. McMillan and her marketing team knew they had to “frame” the relationship in a positive light to “hook” and “sell” it to her female reading audience. Why couldn’t Terry just be honest with the public? I remember watching SEX TV in Toronto there was an episode on this phenomenon of rich western black and white women travel to the Caribbean in search of the big black penis.
I had a few problems with the Reuters article. I thought it was racist of Reuters to make the assumption that “only” the young black men can have sexually transmitted diseases. The article made it crystal clear some of the European women did not want to use “condoms” they wanted to “feel” the experience of having sex with a black man. Just because the rich European women are “white”, and “senior citizens” doesn’t mean they cannot also have sexually transmitted diseases. Isn’t it possible the European women can also pass on infections to the young black men? I thought this section of the article was very offensive because it frames young African men once again as disease carriers and it places all the blame on them.
Why did Reuters frame the article as if STDs is just one way traffic? I think its obvious once again that the media “lens” to this story is the older European women are “unfortunate victims”. The section about “condoms use” makes it appear as though the European women are “lonely spinsters” that aren’t thinking clearly. The truth is the white females are adults they have agency over their own minds and bodies. When are women ever accountable for their own actions? Nobody forced the European women to travel to Africa they made that choice. The British females made the decision to travel thousands of miles to Africa for sex. The European women know exactly what they are doing. It’s so racist for Reuters to make it appear as though the white women have no say. The fact is the white women have all the power. The white women have the “money” and the young African men “don’t” so they obviously have the “control.” Sex tourism doesn’t just take place in Kenya other hot spots are Gambia, Nigeria, and South Africa as well.
The piece also ignored the “obvious” reasons Western women travel to Kenya, Nigeria, Gambia, or South Africa for sex. Sure, Reuters did explore the “exotic” factor a little bit. The truth is the “dark skin factor” wasn’t explored. Some people are attracted to “darker skinned” African men its a sexual turn on for some Westerners. In the Occidental societies its well-known that darker skinned black men are viewed as more “masculine.”
The Occidental world has a love/hate relationship with black men. Interracial sex between white women and black men is still seen as “taboo” in this world. Despite the hypocrisy the western media frame young black men as being sexually attractive but of course as “tainted.”
The anonymous factor is a major reason rich Western women travel to Africa for sex. No one will “know” the Western women went to Africa in search for sex with young black men. Just to make things clear I am not against sex between consenting adults people have a right to make their own decisions. I am also not against interracial sex. It’s clear the older European women have manifested these sexual desires for young black men but an interracial relationship is considered “wrong” in the UK. The sex with the young black men is framed as “licentious”, “illicit” and “dirty” because if there was nothing “wrong” with the interracial sex why the need for the women to have their names “changed” for the Reuters article? After all, the European women are adults and adults can have sex with other adults if the sex is consensual.
The western women can have their sexual conquest and eat their cake too. Second, sex tourism is “fuelled” by racism. The racist stereotypes about black male sexuality is obvious. The “erotic” factor the Reuters didn’t explore is that some Western people think young African men are naive and easier to exploit since they are poor. Why didn’t the Reuters article explore this angle a bit further?
Why don’t the old British women chase young white males in the UK for sex? I am sure there are plenty of young white men in Scotland, or Wales, or England, or Northern Ireland that are poor too. Why not travel to Spain, Italy, Germany, France, or some where in Europe for these sexual encounters? So why aren’t these white women interested in “younger” white men? Why travel all the way to Africa?
I think the answer is clear some people still believe in the racist, misandrist stereotypes that all African men have enormous “large penises”, “more stamina”, “sexual prowess” and are “better lovers.” Let’s just put the cards on the table here we know what people say privately about black male sexuality. The racist and misandrist stereotypes are also that black men we only think about sex all the time and that’s all we are good for. It is disgusting and incredibly racist that Reuters refused to look at the article from all sides. Why is there this racist and sexist double standard? The Reuters article didn’t explore the sexual stereotypes angle enough. I was very disappointed about that because that’s the “fire” the “impetus” for Western people to travel to Africa for sex. The white women travelled to Africa in search of the mythical Big Black Dick.
These western women are not wallflowers they know “exactly” what they are doing and they aren’t “victims” either. In fact the European women are the “oppressors” they are taking advantage of poor, innocent, young black men for their own sexual gratification. Some of the men these women are having sex with are minors and teenagers. Some of these European female tourists are pedophiles. The reason white females travel down “south” for sex tourism is the same reason white and black western men do it they think obtaining sex is easier with no strings attached. So why is the public’s knowledge about sex tourism so one-sided?
In the Occident young African, Caribbean, and Afro Latino men are viewed as poor, uneducated, and desperate for money. The young black men are easy victims for racist rich women looking to quick sex.The western women have the “money” and the black men have their “youth” and “beauty”. A transaction takes place this form of sex tourism is basically male prostitution. Yet you won’t read about this going on in many feminist journals that’s for sure.

Why are black women just the best friends and mammies on Prime Time Television?
The new television season has seen a surge of TV shows that are female centered programs. The Bionic woman on NBC lead by Michelle Ryan and on ABC Kate Walsh the former star of Grey’s Anatomy has her own show “Private Practice.” Ryan and Walsh are both young, attractive, white women. Asian American actress Lucy Liu will appear on the ABC show “Cashmere Mafia” and Liu is the lead. However, besides Liu why are the three other female leads on that program white females? Where are the other females of colour in leading roles on network television?
The ABC program “Ugly Betty” has been praised by critics since the show is about a young hispanic woman played by Latina actress America Ferrera. The ABC show “Ugly Betty” is based on a hispanic woman and caters to the concerns of the hispanic community. The question remains why are black women never TV stars and always in the shadows?
The golden age for black television was from the mid 1970s to the late 1990s. Marla Gibbs got her own spin off after “The Jeffersons” was canceled in the early 1980s. Gibbs had her own hit show 227 on NBC in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Another popular black sitcom that was female driven was “A Different World” on NBC. Jasmine Guy was amazing in the lead role Whitley Gilbert. In the mid 1990s Living Single had two black female stars Queen Latifah and Kim Fields on the FOX network. Queen Latifah and Kim Fields proved black women can be successful on a major television network and draw in audiences.
In the past black female characters on TV were complex, had love lives, dealt with tragedy, pain, happiness, yet now are basically forgotten. The ideology of Hollywood and society is that white females must be the center of true womanhood. By contrast, black women are still considered not only inferior but also non existent as well due to racism and sexism.
On the mainstream network television the programming for people of colour in the year 2007 is basically non existent there has been a total complete whiteout. Chris Rock’s TV show has received more acclaim then Girlfriends but then again his program is about the nuclear black heterosexual family. Once again, black women are marginalized due to race and gender in Hollywood. Although black heterosexual men complain about racism black women encounter more oppression due to racism and sexism.
Girlfriends the black female sitcom is back for the eighth season yet the show is segregated on the smaller CW network on the fringes. “Girlfriends” also isn’t winning any SAG, Emmys, or even People’s Choice awards.Do you even have to question the reasons why? The mainstream media act as though “Girlfriends” doesn’t exist. “Girlfriends” wouldn’t be on television if people didn’t tune in to watch the program the show clearly has an audience.
“Sex and the City” was on cable and “Girlfriends” is on the CW network. The CW network is a mainstream television channel in the United States. So why the obvious snub against Girlfriends? You can figure it out it is not exactly hard to decipher. “Sex And The City” was hyped to the maximum because the cast is white women and Girlfriends was scorned because the cast is black women. Girlfriends is marginalized due to a mixture of racism and sexism. Girlfriends is branded “urban programming” despite the fact the show dealt with polemical issues such as sexism, homophobia, lesbianism, internal and external racism, financial issues, bad friends, love, romance, in a witty funny way.
People will go on and on about how groundbreaking “Sex and The City” was but “Sex And The City” always avoided the issue of race and reality. “Sex And The City” is pure fantasy to be able to party all night, buying designer clothes, and living in upscale apartments in New York City is not realistic. “Sex And The City” is basically a whiteout.
However, I think the original “Sex and the City” was the Golden Girls on NBC in the 1980s. The Golden Girls was a superior television program because the show dealt with a wide range of social issues mixed with humor. “Sex and the City” is a decent show it is funny but that program always ignored people of colour. Whenever people of colour were on Sex And The City they were always in marginalized racist roles as either servants or sexual stereotypes. For instance, Blair Underwood was on the program for a hot minute and the Samantha character had an interracial sex scene with a black guy big deal. It is obvious interracial romance was taboo for the program.
Let’s be honest here “Girlfriends” is just as good as “Sex And The City” but “Girlfriends” had an all black cast. I just find it interesting that Girlfriends is treated like it is an inferior program. At least on Girlfriends the women had financial issues they certainly were middle class and not rich. I believe “Girlfriends” hasn’t gotten the respect it deserves. The writing on “Girlfriends” has gotten stronger and stronger over the years.
At least on Girlfriends black women were the stars of the show. On mainstream television the two roles designated for black women they are either the asexual mammy or the black female best friend. On the ABC program Private Practice the talented and very attractive black actress Merrin Dungey was fired after the pilot and replaced with another black woman the theatre star Audra McDonald.
McDonald’s character of course is the stereotypical role for a black woman on mainstream TV she’s the white girl Kate Walsh’s “best friend.” Kimberly Elise has been removed from the CBS program “Close to home” she was the “best friend” of the white actress Jennifer Finnigan. Tangi Miller a few years back on the WB network show “Felicity” was also the “best friend” to the white star Keri Russell. Lisa Nicole Carson was also the “best friend” to white actress Calista Flockhart on “Ally McBeal.”
Yes folks, the best thing a black actress can hope for on mainstream network television is to be the “best friend” of the white actress. Although being the “best friend” to the white woman is a lot better then being the resident “black mammy”. The black female best friend is allowed to be sexy, attractive, intelligent, but she must never ever upstage the white female star. Because after all black women on network TV have to know their place they have to be “behind” the white woman and in the background.
The prime time television shows rarely focus on the love lives of the black female best friend. The purpose of the black female best friend is to fulfill the race quota of the network and be the servant to the white woman. The black female best friend character is a stereotype because she is just a plot device a catalyst to help and serve the white woman. Whenever the white actress can’t find a man, breaks up with a man, or is emotional about a man, the black female best friend is always there to comfort her. Yes, that’s all black women on television are for to serve white women.
The ideology of TV executives, scriptwriters, advertisers, and the viewing public is that in order to appease black TV viewers we should just accept this racist and sexist treatment. We should just be grateful that black women are on TV and go with the flow. Television script writers always place black women as just the black mammies or the best friends to the white women.
It is also shocking that Dungey was “replaced” from the ABC show “Private Practice” by an actress that is far less experienced, attractive, and less sexy then her Audra McDonald. Could it be that ABC fired the gorgeous and talented Dungey because the best friend of the white girl has to be less attractive? Let’s be honest and real here, Audra McDonald is a nice looking woman she looks like the girl next door she’s “safe”. I just don’t think McDonald has the fire and the sex appeal that Merrin Dungey has. McDonald does have a very “conservative look” she is pleasant to look and non threatening.
Merrin Dungey is a more talented television actress there is just something special about her you just cannot take your eyes off of her. Merrin is so beautiful. And lets face it the real reason Shonda Rhimes removed Merrin is because she’s too “pretty” perhaps Rhimes is self conscious? I mean have you seen Shonda Rhimes she’s not exactly attractive like Merrin Dungey either. Perhaps Rhimes is jealous and envious?
The status quo from ABC is that there wasn’t enough “chemistry” between Merrin and Kate Walsh. I’m not buying it. Kate Walsh is an attractive woman but Merrin is also very beautiful as well. The bottom line is Walsh is supposed to be the object of desire for television fans not the black woman. The black female is not supposed to challenge the white female as being the most beautiful woman on television. Of course hypocritical Shonda Rhimes and ABC would never admit the truth for firing Dungey now would they?
McDonald definitely fits that role of the less attractive female friend. McDonald is okay looking she’s alright but she’s not hot like Merrin Dungey that’s for sure. McDonald also is not as experienced on the small screen as Dungey. Dungey is a very talented actress best known for her character Allison Doren on the former ABC hit show “Alias” a few years back. She also proved she was a versatile actress and she moved to comedy on the “King Of Queens Show” and she also was on the drama the WB network program “Summerland.”
A few years back on the ABC hit program “Desperate Housewives” there was an uproar when ABC hired African American actress Alfre Woodard. Woodard’s although a very talented actress was much older then the five main leads on the program. Woodard’s character Betty Applewhite was once again another black asexual mammy. Woodard’s character had no plot and clearly no reason to be on the program other then to fulfill the race quota of ABC.
Many people on various internet boards questioned why couldn’t ABC hire a sexy and talented black actress such as Robin Givens, or Vivica A Fox or Gabrielle Union? Why hire Alfre Woodard? Woodard was too old to be on Desperate Housewives to be a main character. The truth is if ABC hired Givens, Fox, or Union, on Desperate Housewives they would have to explore black female sexuality and that’s something network television refuses to do. Black female sexuality is off limits on mainstream TV.
Being the “best friend” to the white actress is indeed a higher level then being the new black mammies. The new black mammies aren’t maids, they aren’t making breakfast, cleaning floors, washing dishes, and pouring maple syrup on pancakes like Aunt Jemima. The new black mammies give “advice” though and are a shoulder to “cry” on for the white male and female costars on the hit TV programs. The TV formula has been set the collective thinking is why fix something that works?
The black female best friend character is a tough role to decipher she is a mixture of both the mammy and the magic negro syndrome. Unfortunately scriptwriters believe the black female best friend fulfills their “black quota”. Are black women and white women friends anyway in real life?
The most famous and rich mammy on television is Oprah. Oprah is the most successful mammy of all time because although she is rich she is subservient to whites. Mammy Oprah’s formula is never to rock the boat. Notice on Oprah you will never see an episode about the racial divide between white women and women of colour. Yes mammy Oprah’s television show is a gimmick that women are all “sisters”.
However, black feminist Audre Lorde wrote about this pernicious lie in her groundbreaking book “Sister Outsider”. Mammy Oprah avoids the issue of dealing with racism because she wants white women money. Mammy Oprah is still subservient to whites because she knows if she discusses the racial tension in feminism she will lose money.
After all, mammy Oprah has product placements and books to sell. Mammy Oprah also is “nurturing” she is a shoulder to cry on and give advice to the distressed upper class desperate housewives in the audience. Mammy Oprah may be wealthy but she is a stereotype of black female sexuality because she ignores the issue of the racial issues between women of colour and white women.
The underlining issues of resentment, racism, reality, and anger are left unexplored. Should we just accept this facade? However, on television just about all the female friends to the white actress are women of colour. Sandra Oh’s character Christina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy she’s the “best friend” of the white female star and Oh is an Asian Canadian woman.
Hollywood refuses to allow black women to headline television shows on the major networks. The question has to be asked again, why are white women always the stars and black women always in the background? The racism is less obvious to the discerning eye but it is indeed there. The black mammies however still are reserved for black women on network TV. The black mammies don’t have complex storylines they aren’t central to the plot of the shows, and they don’t have love lives.
Where are the complex black female characters on TV? Why do black actresses on TV always have to be in the background as the white girl’s best friend? Or even better yet invisible like Dr. Bailey? The most disconcerting part is that another argument to consider is that blacks need to be in the power broking decisions to get shows “green lighted.” Shonda Rhimes is the executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy. Rhimes has the “power” to make Dr. Bailey a complex young woman. Yet Rhimes a young black woman reduces the Dr. Bailey character to be a pernicious and racist stereotype of black womanhood. Rhimes is following the status quo and that is there is an intense fear of exploring black female sexuality.
Is Shonda Rhimes and ABC saying Dr. Bailey is too black or too fat for love? Would the audience be disgusted by seeing a real black woman kiss her black husband on TV? Is this too much for white America or ABC to handle? You got to wonder? Grey’s Anatomy the hit ABC program has been serenaded by critics as a show where “race” isn’t the story but the interconnection of human relationships.
Grey’s Anatomy boasts a consistent 20 million plus viewers every week. Grey’s Anatomy is basically ABC’s version of a hospital show that less serious then ER on NBC but mixed with some comedy. However, the main attraction the public has to Grey’s Anatomy is the white heterosexual relationships between the various doctors and interns on the program. Since Isaiah Washington was fired from Grey’s Anatomy the most complex, interesting, and exciting romance storyline between Washington and Sandra Oh has been eliminated. Grey’s Anatomy is basically a white out. Although, the latina actress Sara Ramirez had an interracial storyline with the white actor TR Knight that romance was simply not believable. Ramirez is a striking woman very attractive yet TR Knight is simply unattractive, effeminate, and not masculine enough to pull off a convincing performance and be Ramirez love interest.
One character that stands out and the only black female on Grey’s Anatomy Dr. Miranda Bailey also known as “The Nazi” is asexual and is the resident big fat black mammy.
The interesting aspect of Grey’s Anatomy is that the executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy is a young black woman Shonda Rhimes. According to Rhimes the character of Dr. Bailey was originally supposed to be for a white actress. The status quo is that Chandra Wilson gave the best audition so the part went to her. However, Rhimes is not being honest. Rhimes created Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice to reach a white female demographic. Would white women watch either programs if white women weren’t in the lead?
Another point to consider is why would a black woman in a position of authority and power such as Shonda Rhimes not advance the race? Why would Rhimes just follow the status quo? Could it be Shonda Rhimes is shallow and just cares about getting rich? Sure seems like it. Why didn’t she allow a black actress to be the star of either Grey’s Anatomy or Private Practice? It is a fair question. Black women are never the female leads on TV shows. Although Rhimes has been praised she’s just following the status quo. Its disconcerting that money is more important to Rhimes then helping out other black women.
The bottom line is the Dr. Bailey character is indeed a modern reincarnation of the “black mammy” of Grey’s Anatomy. Dr. Bailey is seen barking orders at her interns, she also is the “nurturing” mammy that “listens” to the romantic problems of her white, hispanic, Asian, and black characters on Grey’s Anatomy. Yet why does Dr. Bailey not have a love life of her own? Is Shonda Rhimes and ABC trying to say Dr. Bailey doesn’t deserve romance because she’s a black woman? Why is Dr. Bailey so perfect anyway?
However, it is not surprising though that the Dr. Bailey character although married and does have a child is never shown as a sexual human being as her white, Asian, or black co workers on Grey’s Anatomy. In the second and third seasons of Grey’s Anatomy the writers have attempted to humanize Dr. Bailey by making her more vulnerable, questioning herself. Yet Dr. Bailey is still the asexual black mammy. People say Dr. Bailey has a loving husband. So why don’t we see Dr. Bailey in love with her so called loving husband more often? Why doesn’t Shonda Rhimes and ABC just be honest? The real reason Dr. Bailey doesn’t have a love life on Grey’s Anatomy is the fear ABC executives have with exploring black female sexuality.
Meanwhile, on the CBS show “Without A Trace” Marianne Jean Baptiste a very talented black British actress is also the resident black mammy on that program. “Without A Trace” also has a very large following consistently is in the top 20 of the TV ratings. Baptiste’s character Vivian Johnson never had a love life unlike her white co stars on the program. Vivian is the wise older black woman that is a mixture of the magic negro, black mammy, and the best friend. Of course, just like Dr. Bailey you will notice Vivian Johnson is happily married with a husband and child you hardly ever see. The happily married scenario is a convenient yet deleterious plot device to erase black female sexuality. I guess if television audiences saw Vivian Johnson kissing her husband the mainstream audience would cringe. The fear of black love is very powerful and the networks have a record of bigotry against blacks.
The biggest drama for the character Vivian was her “heart condition” that required surgery. Last season there was complaints on various internet message boards because the producers behind the CBS show “Without A Trace” hired the young Latina Roslyn Sanchez to add “sex appeal” to the program. Sanchez character of course had a previous relationship with one of the main male characters on the program. Why couldn’t an attractive black woman be hired? And will black women and other women of colour ever be able to be real TV stars? Or is the best thing a black or Asian actress can hope for on network TV is to be a step behind the white actress as her “best friend”? Or be the “nurturing” black mammy, the best friend or magic negro to console her?
