Is The Character Olivia Pope On TV Show Scandal Just The White Man’s Whore?

I agree with the black lady’s You Tube critique of the hit ABC show Scandal that the character Olivia Pope is the white man’s whore. I understand, that a lot of black women love Scandal because it is the first show since 1974 to have a black lady in the lead. Olivia Pope isn’t a mammy or a maid which is often a popular representation of a black woman on television. Remember, Nell Carter’s 1980s hit show Gimme A Break? Carter’s character was a maid for a white middle class family.

A common image of a black woman on television is to be mammy the black female character is usually overweight, unattractive, a loudmouth, and of course asexual. On another ABC show Grey’s Anatomy, Chandra Wilson’s character Dr. Bailey is a mammy she doesn’t really have a life of her own. Dr. Bailey is tough but she’s also very loving and nurturing she conforms to the black mammy stereotype.

Scandal is different from Gimme A Break and Grey’s Anatomy because Kerry Washington is a very attractive black woman she’s presenting a more feminine image of a black woman. Washington’s character on Scandal Olivia Pope is intelligent, sexy, and she gets to wear fancy clothes. However, beneath the surface, there are some subliminal messages that I find unsettling.

Scandal presents another stereotype of the black woman, the oversexed black whore. There seems to be no in between for black female characters on television they are either maids, a mammy, or a whore.

First, the relationship between Olivia Pope and President Grant is based on lust and sex that’s it. The You Tube critique is correct, Olivia Pope is the white man’s whore because she isn’t getting what she wants which is a loving relationship where is treated like an equal. One argument is, Scandal is a television show so why can’t black characters be flawed just like white characters? There is some veracity to this argument that black characters do not need to be noble saints.

However, given the fact there are very negative stereotypes about black women in pop culture in relation to sexuality Scandal simply engenders and reinforces these representations of black women.

Second, Olivia Pope sleeps with the President but she’s not his wife she’s his side chick, she’s the mistress, the jump off but she’s not his wife. Olivia Pope is never going to be more than the president’s whore that’s all she is. President Grant gets to have sex with Olivia and go back to his wife Mellie and have sex with her too. President Grant is getting what he wants a lot of sex without the commitment from Olivia Pope.

I don’t think Olivia Pope is like Sally Hemmings, but I do believe there is a strong power imbalance in the relationship.
Shonda Rhimes the executive producer of Scandal is also a black woman but she doesn’t have a problem making Olivia Pope so weak, fragile, and vulnerable.

Third, Scandal isn’t a positive image of a black woman because it depicts the black woman as being licentious and all about sex. The interracial relationship is hidden from the public’s view it is treated as though it is a secret not something that people should respect. Yes, certain characters are aware of the interracial affair but the general public do not. The fact that the interracial relationship is a secret simply magnifies the fact it is considered negative and bad.

I believe the interracial element to Scandal is indeed it is still taboo for a black woman to have an affair with a powerful white man. The Scandal is indeed the interracial relationship it is considered dirty, dangerous, and could be disastrous.

Where is Olivia Pope’s dignity? Doesn’t Olivia have enough self respect to break off a relationship with a man who clearly doesn’t love her?

I am aware that Olivia Pope did have a black male love interest in the second season but the black senator was an old man. The black male love interest wasn’t someone who could have become a serious threat to President Grant.

Hopefully, as Scandal progresses Shonda Rhimes will allow Olivia Pope to become more independent from President Grant but I doubt it. The audience seems to like Olivia Pope being the white man’s whore which is sad. Scandal isn’t progressive the program depicts black women as loose sluts willing to drop their panties for powerful white men.

Hot Couple Alert: Looks Like Serena Williams Might Be Dating Her French Coach Patrick Patrick Mouratouglou.

Serena Williams and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou may just have better chemistry than most professional tandems.

Rumors abound that the two are actually an item.

The Detroit Free Press reports on rumblings from French website PKTennis.

Here are a couple of photos that the website snapped that proves the two are far closer than most players and coaches would be.

Yes, that is either Williams showing affection, or her trying to steal Mouratoglou’s wallet. We like to think she is doing alright for herself and hardly needs the money.

So consider this an amorous expression.

Before you go on thinking this is an all-play and hardly-any-work relationship, theDetroit Free Press report reminds us just how successful Williams’ coach has been.

She hired the French Tennis Academy coach after she was ousted in the first round of the French Open. Since that time, she won Wimbledon and most recently the U.S. Open.

Oh, yeah: She also managed to win a gold medal in the London Olympics. That would be 3-for-3 in majors plus Olympic competitions since the two teamed up.

If that weren’t enough, the report gives us this little tidbit: “Bruce International Properties, the storefront at which Williams and Mouratoglou are gazing, sells property on the French Riviera.”

When normal people begin a relationship, they take a nice little day trip somewhere. When you are a world-class athlete, you flirt with the idea of buying a vacation spot along the French Riviera.

I’m not sure the tennis world stands a chance against this dynamic duo.

People Magazine: Tennis Champion Venus Williams Is In Love With A Cuban Stud Elio Pis!!

By PAUL CHI

Venus has a hot new man!

After dropping out of last year’s U.S. Open and announcing she was suffering from Sjögren’s Syndrome, a happy and healthy Venus Williams made a triumphant return to the New York Grand Slam tournament last week with her new boyfriend at her side. The tennis champ, 32, has been dating Cuban model Elio Alberto Pis, 24, for several months, PEOPLE has learned.

And it’s been a love match on and off the court.

The couple were seen holding hands and sweetly kissing each other while walking through the corridors of Arthur Ashe Stadium. During all of her matches, Pis sat courtside with Williams’s friends and family, cheering the two-time U.S. Open winner. Her return was cut short, though. Williams lost to Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the second round on Aug. 30, and she was eliminated from the doubles competition with younger sister Serena on Sept. 3.

With Williams set to present her clothing line, EleVen, during New York Fashion Week, expect to see more of Pis. As he steps out with the tennis ace, here are five things to know about the guy that has won over her heart:

1. He’s a model on the rise
Pis has worked with Williams on her athletic line, EleVen. The two posed together for her website, showing off her ready-to-wear tennis apparel. The 6’1 hunk has also been featured inFrench Vogue with Brooke Shields and has modeled for Russell Simmons’s clothing line.

2. He’s a hard worker
The Cuban – who now lives in Miami – studied diligently to learn English and put himself through school. He graduated with a psychology degree from Florida International University in 2010.

3. He’s outspoken
According to his Facebook page, Pis describes himself as a “constant thinker, optimistic, a free spirit and blunt.”

4. He’s a DeNiro fan
He loves to play checkers and enjoys reading books such as Robert Wright’s The Moral Animal. The 1993 Robert De Niro crime drama A Bronx Tale is his favorite movie, and he likes listening to Miami recording artist J-Toven.

5. He loves tennis
Pis lists only one sports hero on his Facebook page. His favorite? None other than Venus Williams, of course.

South Asian Man’s Black Wife Allegedly Murdered By His Father

Oh my goodness I just heard about a tragic tale about interracial love that ended in murder in Atlanta. When people talk about racial tensions it is usually between people of colour and the majority. Yet the question has to be asked, why does the public ignore the racism between communities of colour? For instance, in Canada and the United States there is racial tension between the blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and Native American communities.

In the Caribbean, in Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana the racial tensions between the blacks and South Asian populations are intense. Just because blacks and South Asians tend to have a darker skin tone doesn’t mean our cultures, histories, languages, values, aren’t different? Why is there this reticence to the racial divide? Can healing take place?

The story goes like this a young South Asian man fell in love with a young African American woman woman at his workplace. After the courtship the couple had a child and got married. However, tragedy emerges when the black wife is brutally murdered. Rumors are swirling in Atlanta that the father of the South Asian man was the mastermind behind the murder here is the link:

I Love Nandita Das She Is An Amazing Actress!

Although, younger South Asian actresses, such as Shilpa Shetty and Aishwarya Rai, are receiving more international media attention. I believe Nandita Das is more talented. Everyone talks about how pretty Shilpa and Aishwarya are, but I firmly believe Nandita Das is a beautiful woman she is stunning! Nandita is very fastidious, she is more of an independent art house actress, and she is respected for her acting abilities. I admire Nandita because she has been able to navigate between Bollywood and Hollywood. I would love to see Nandita in a major blockbuster mainstream Hollywood film that would be amazing!

I think Nandita’s success proves, a darker skinned South Asian actress, can have success in Indian cinema, and international movies. In South Asian cinema, the actresses tend to be fair skinned and have Eurocentric features. Nandita is a beautiful, brown skinned, South Asian woman, and she has a huge audience in India and internationally.

Nandita has a solid career, she has appeared in Indian films and western movies. I remember, the first time I saw Nandita act, she was in Deepa Mehta’s lesbian drama “Fire”. I thought Nandita’s performance was so strong in “Fire” she was very brave to be in the film. There were protests in India and even violence because some South Asian men were enraged that the movie involved South Asian actresses in a lesbian film. After “Fire” Nandita appeared in the acclaimed film “Earth”. Nandita is such a talented actress she has a new movie out called “Before The Rains”.

“Before The Rains” is set in 1937 India in the state of Kerala. Kerala is a very interesting Indian state because it is a matriarchal society and women are in control not the men. The women in Kerala have the power since literacy and higher education is available for women.

Okay I will admit the plot for “Before The Rains” is a bit derivative. How many times does there have to be a movie about a young beautiful South Asian woman in a doomed marriage? Are South Asian men being stereotyped as being pernicious and abusive to women? I have to admit I yearn to see more movies with South Asian men in more tender roles in Western cinema instead of just being evil husbands.

What is the real issue with the interracial love theme is it to create controversy or to provide texture to the film? I kind of wonder if the screenwriters or producers can think outside of the box a little bit more? Also, how can the stunning Nandita Das be just a maid? The only reason “Before The Rains” is even worth watching is because Nandita Das is in the film if she wasn’t in the movie I wouldn’t care about the film at all. I think Nandita deserves better roles to showcase her talent.

Nandita’s character in “Before The Rains” is a young beautiful South Asian maid Sajani she is in a loveless marriage to a callous South Asian man. Sajani wants more out of her life she desires excitement and pleasure. The Indian husband in “Before The Rains” is evil he beats Sajani after he finds out that she is involved in an interracial love affair with a white man. Sajani falls in love with her white boss LLinus Roche’s character Henry Moores.

The village people find out about Sajani’s interracial affair and all hell breaks loose. The movie was released in North America recently. Also, I have more good news Nandita is directing her first feature film called “In Such Times” I am so excited!

DVD Review Monster’s Ball: Is Halle Berry`s Sexually Explicit Movie Progress Or A Step Backwards For Black Women In Hollywood?

monsters-ball.jpg

First, let me say congratulations to Halle Berry for having a successful delivery and giving birth to a healthy baby girl. Halle must be thrilled right now she’s always wanted to have a child. I am sure Halle will be a wonderful loving and caring mother. Although, some people think I don’t like Halle Berry this is simply not true. I believe  Halle is a solid actress one of her performances was in the television film “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” for HBO.

Eighty three year old Ruby Dee, was nominated for her performance in the film “American Gangster” she didn’t win. I was shocked this was Ruby Dee’s first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. I think it is such a disgrace that Ruby Dee wasn’t nominated for her electrifying performance in the 1961 classic film “A Raisin In The Sun.”

I started to think to myself what is Halle Berry’s appeal really all about? Obviously, Berry is a very attractive woman I’m not blind. My questions refer more about Halle Berry’s acting abilities. Halle Berry definitely takes risks in her roles more risks then other black actresses. I applaud Halle for taking challenging roles for pushing the conventional thinking about black woman. Halle Berry’s most controversial and perhaps the one she won an Oscar for was for Monster’s Ball. Halle’s acting in Monster’s Ball is superb you see the layers, the complexity the feelings of anguish, sadness, grief, regret, pain, and finally acceptance of her character’s circumstances.

I also believe Halle Berry benefited at being at the right place at the right time. Prior to winning the best actress Oscar, Berry was already the top actress of colour in Hollywood. The best actress Oscar win simply cemented Halle Berry’s A list status. The question is, will another black woman ever win best actress Oscar? Does it even matter? Should we care? Or is the bigger issue the lack of dramatic roles for black women? The Oscars appear to me to be more about politics then about the actual craft of acting.

In the year 2002, the Academy had heard for years that talented black actors weren’t winning Oscars. The Academy killed two birds with one stone giving the best actor and actress Oscars to Denzel Washington and Halle Berry. I cringe when people say this is progress. I am not so sure. Denzel’s character in “Training Day” was a crooked cop. Halle Berry’s character in Monster’s Ball comes across as a whore willing to do anything to move up the social ladder.

Some of the the criticism for Monster’s Ball, is the fact, many people believe Halle’s character Leticia Musgrove should of went to a less sexually attractive actress. I will admit seeing Halle even without make up on she still looks glamorous even though she’s not supposed to be. It makes sense that Billy Bob Thorton’s character the racist prison guard Hank would want to have sex with Leticia. Althoughm Hank is a racist he is still a red blooded man with raging hormones.

The part of Monster’s Ball I don’t believe, is how quickly Hank “falls in love” with Leticia it doesn’t make sense to me. Was it love or just lust? How can a man in middle age suddenly transform so quickly from being a racist bigot to falling in love with a black woman? Why did Hank send his racist father to the nursing home after insulting Leticia? I doubt this would occur in the real world.

After, Leticia’s husband is executed, she is struggling to pay her bills. Leticia she is forced to leave her apartment and Hank decides to help her. The question is why? What was Hank’s real motivation? I wondered why didn’t the movie explore this a bit more? Didn’t Leticia have any family or friends or any connection to the black community? Leticia appeared isolated from the black community?

Perhaps, this was the screenwriter’s true motivation the fantasy that a black woman needs to be saved by a white man in order to have a better life? The screenwriter’s real motivation also is to cheapen a black actress force her to perform in a degrading and racist sex scene for shock value. Hank doesn’t appear to me as a noble or nice man. He just looks like a racist old man that wanted to exploit a beautiful black woman since she was was vulnerable and in danger.

Heath Ledger has a small but important role in Monster’s Ball his character Sonny. Ledger’s character is a sensitive young man, he works with his father at the prison. Heath Ledger was an attractive guy he easily could of been Halle’s love interest in Monster’s Ball. I think Berry and Ledger becoming a romantic couple in this movie would of made more sense. Sonny is depressed, he feels unloved, he sleeps with prostitutes because he cannot make a connection to a woman in the mainstream world. Sonny also feels unloved by his racist father Hank. I think it would of made more sense if Heath Ledger’s character Sonny fell in love with Leticia because Sonny wasn’t a racist.

Billy Bob Thorton is simply too repugnant, unattractive, and old for the leading man role. It just didn’t seem right that Leticia would fall in love with such an unappealing old guy. Monster’s Ball would of been a more interesting movie if Sonny and Leticia fell in love because they are closer in age and Sonny appeared to to be more open about interracial romance. Sonny was just insecure and weak he followed his father Hank because he was desperate for his approval and love. Sonny wasn’t a racist. Sonny commits suicide right in front of his father Hank and his racist grandfather.

Leticia’s son also dies in a tragic accident. Next, the media and public focus shifts to the intense sex scene between Berry and Thorton. The sex scene seems to me purely for shock value a way to gain publicity for the film and it worked. I am sure millions of heterosexual men flocked to the movie theaters because they can see sex symbol Halle Berry naked in her full glory. Leticia Musgrove is reduced to the pernicious stereotype of being a whore. In Hollywood, black women are stereotyped two ways, the black woman is sterotyped as  either the maid or the whore.

The quandary is, the sex scene reduces Berry’s character Leticia to a filthy whore. Leticia screeches the famous line “make me feel good” with a sneer. I can understand why some black men were so enraged with the sex scene. The question has to be asked, does a black woman have to reduce herself in a licentious nude sex scene to win Oscar? Is this really progress?

When was the last time you saw Angelina Jolie in an intense interracial sex scene with With Smith? Can a leading black male actor have an explicit sex scene with a top white actress and win an Oscar? Can Terrence Howard have an intense sexual scene with Jennifer Aniston or Julia Roberts and receive critical acclaim? The answer is never because that’s never going to happen. Hollywood is all about white male dominance and white heterosexual men will never allow leading white women to have black male love interests.

Would a white actress that is considered beautiful have an intense, nude sex scene, with a black man and receive critical acclaim? Charlize Theron and Will Smith have a movie coming out this year called Hancock and according to reports there is an interracial love theme in this movie. Hancock is going to be a comedy it is not a drama. Theron is an A list white actress actress she is considered to be one of the most beautiful and talented women in Hollywood. Will Smith is A list the most powerful man in Hollywood and he is black. The question is despite Will Smith’s crossover success will Hancock be a success with the black and white audiences? How intense will the movie’s interracial theme be?

The sex scene in Monster’s Ball was meant to be fractured to be awkward, to illustrate two anguished souls smashing together for comfort. At the same time, Halle Berry’s sex appeal was exploited to lure in the male audience and create a buzz for the movie. Monster’s Ball reduces Leticia Musgrove to being a prostitute. Angela Bassett slammed the character Leticia Musgrove in a famous interview with Newsweek magazine. Bassett said she was not impressed with the character Leticia Musgrove because she believes it stereotypes black female sexuality.

The relationship between Leticia and Hank is basically a transaction it is a form of prostitution. Hank, the older white man, wants Leticia’s body because she is young and pretty. Hank will allow Leticia to live with him if she has sex with him. Since Leticia has no money, she offers her body to Hank for shelter. Hank also has a higher social status then Leticia she benefits from this as well. But where is the love? I didn’t feel that either character truly loved each other. I will give Halle Berry credit for taking on a role that despite the controversy. Berry’s acting is very strong, you really do believe Leticia is in a lot of pain. Monster’s Ball was the last big dramatic movie role for a black actress and that was over seven years ago. The paucity of leading lady roles for black women is still very rare. Think about it, when was the last time you went to a movie theater and saw a black actress in a serious dramatic piece as the leading lady?

I Hope Neo Ned Is Released In 2008?

neo-ned-pic.jpg

I have heard some rumors that the controversial independent drama Neo Ned may be released on DVD in 2008? People are constantly complaining that black actresses never get serious dramatic roles. I think it is very sad that such an important film hasn’t found distribution. According to some discussions on the internet the controversial issue about the “Hitler factor” and the interracial romance theme is the reason “Neo Ned” hasn’t been released. I guess I am waiting in vain perhaps? Oh well, I hope I can see this film on DVD one day hopefully sometime this year?

Gabrielle’s character Rachel is a complex, intelligent, and depressed young black woman she believes the soul of Hitler is trapped in her body. Rachel is a survivor of sexual abuse and she only actually “pretends” that the soul of Hitler is in her body.

Yes, Neo Ned is a bit out there but this is a thought provoking independent film. Jeremy Renner and Gabrielle Union have both received incredible reviews for their outstanding performances in Neo Ned. Neo Ned has received some glowing reviews from the Los Angeles Times, Variety, International Herald Tribune, and other publications.

Neo Ned isn’t just a film about a white male Neo Nazi falling in love with a black woman that believes the soul of Hitler is in her body. The film appears to be challenging and thought  provoking.  Visit http://www.neoned.com and read the reviews for yourself. Neo Ned is about two damaged souls, two people that first meet in a mental institution and fall in love. Although in the end Ned and Rachel realize they may be too different to make the romance work.

If Neo Ned is only released on DVD then I will purchase the movie anyway. I just think its a sad that Neo Ned hasn’t found distribution yet? I have hope that Neo Ned will hopefully be released this this year.
