I wish the LA Complex was getting more press in the black media in North America. It is interesting for me to watch the gay storyline on the NBC soap Days Of Our Lives and the gay storyline on LA Complex. It would be awesome if Ebony, Essence, Upscale, Source, and the rest of the black press paid attention to the LA Complex.
Last night on the LA Complex, Kal’s father sets him up on a date with a beautiful young woman. She is a social worker and she works with disadvantaged people in Los Angeles. However, at the restaurant Kal sees an attractive male waiter and he can’t keep his eyes off of him. Kal is trying to please his father while denying his homosexuality.
I miss Kal’s ex boyfriend Tariq he moved back to Montreal. I think Tariq will appear return to the LA Complex soon. I doubt Tariq and Kal will get back together after Kal brutally attacked him.
I understand stories need controversy and conflict, but why do gay male characters on television always have to date women? Kal kisses Donna but he’s not attracted to women he desires other men.
The issue of race is important when examining both LA Complex and Days of Our Lives. On the LA Complex, it isn’t a white universe where everyone is rich and white. By contrast, on Days Of Our Lives, there is hardly any racial diversity and almost all the characters are white and middle to upper class.
LA Complex is important because it is one of the rare television shows which is telling a gay storyline from a non Eurocentric perspective.
It is refreshing to actually watch television and see black gay men, see the complexity of our lives depicted on the small screen.
Although, the LA Complex isn’t perfect, the Kaldrick and Tariq storyline is a step in the right direction.
The general public needs to know that not all gay people are white or rich and live fabulous lives in the suburbs.
I believe the LA Complex actually takes more risks that Days Of Our Lives because it is actually a Canadian show. Mainstream American television is still very homophobic and reticent about male homosexuality. Remember, in Canada gays and lesbians have appeared on television in positive roles since the 1980s on Degrassi Junior High.
I think in the black community we need to have a more open dialogue about male homosexuality. The R&B singer Frank Ocean’s decision to come out of the closet last month and declare he is sexually attracted to other men is powerful. Suddenly, a quick google search and there are discussions online about black men and homosexuality.
However, the LA Complex is a television show, and I think the writers are trying to illustrate the difficulty Kaldrick King has with coming out. Some people have asked, why doesn’t Kal just come out of the closet? There are multiple reasons why Kal can’t just come out and declare he is gay. First, Kal is a celebrity if he comes out of the closet it can hurt his brand.
Now, one argument is that Frank Ocean came out of the closet but he’s a singer not a rapper. In the hip hop industry, a black male is framed as having a ferocious heterosexuality. The black man has to be masculine, strong, powerful, promiscuous ,and of course straight.
Of course, the hyper heterosexuality of male hip hop artists is full of stereotypes but this is what the audience wants to purchase. In the real world, black men we are diverse, some of us are masculine, some of us are feminine, and some of us are in between.
Days Of Our Lives Clip: Will Freaks Out After Sonny Kisses Him, They Have An Argument & Sonny Ends Up Talking To Brian.
Sonny and Will friendship finally escalated to the next level after Sonny kisses him. Will freaks out, and the two men have an argument.
The acting in this scene is excellent, Freddie Smith he makes the audience believe that his character Sonny is deeply in love with Will. I appreciated the sensitivity and the facial expressions of both actors during the brief kiss. It is important for viewers to look at Freddie’s eyes during this scene because prior to the kiss the audience can see his eyes are full of passion and desire. By contrast, Chandler Massey’s character Will illustrates with his face he is confused about his feelings. Will is conflicted, he is obviously attracted to Sonny but he isn’t comfortable being gay.
After Will lashes out at Sonny, obviously he is hurt because he got rejected by Will. For almost a year, Sonny has tried to be supportive of Will, listening to all his problems. After the disaster in Salem, I think Sonny couldn’t hide his feelings anymore and he kissed Will. In a previous episode, Will was confronted by the homophobe Tad so he wasn’t in a good place emotionally.
However, Will lashing out at Sonny is cruel and unfair. I can see Sonny’s perspective that Will has lead him on for months! For many months fans of the show have noticed Will flirting with Sonny by rubbing his leg, holding him in a deep embrace, telling him how special and wonderful he is. Will has presented Sonny with mixed signals and so Sonny thought that Will has the same feelings.
Another point to consider though is, I can also see Will’s perspective he didn’t specifically tell Sonny he is sexually attracted to him or he wanted to be kissed. One of the flaws with the writing on Days of Our Lives is, the writers haven’t illustrated to the audience that Will is in love with Sonny. This gay romance is too one sided, it is told mostly from Will’s point of view and the audience hasn’t seen Sonny’s perspective.
According to Freddie Smith’s recent media interviews, he indicates that Sonny’s point of view is going to be explored more in the next few months. I hope this is true, because the writing needs to improve.
Some fans are upset because in Wednesday’s episode, Will is going to have sex with Gabi his female friend. A few months ago on Days Of Our Lives Will came out of the closet declaring he is gay. Some fans argue that the writers and producers of Days are homophobic.
I am hopeful that Brant Daugherty’s character Brian stays on the show for a while. In the final scene in the coffee house, Brian is clearly attracted to Sonny and he seems very bold and confident. Brian senses Sonny is upset and he wants to talk to him.
I think Brian is a more suitable love interest for Sonny than Will because he is openly gay and proud. Brian also seems more mature than Will and he seems to be very careful in showing Sonny that he’s attracted to him. For the next few episodes, Brian is going to act like a confidant to Sonny he is going to listen to his problems as he whines about Will. However, in the July 2nd 2012 episode Brian warned Sonny that Will is a closet case and he’s wasting his time with him.
I thought it was wonderful when Will walks into the coffee house and he sees Brian removing the creme from Sonny’s nose and face. Will is clearly jealous but I think he needs to be because he’s taken Sonny for granted for far too long.
MSN Interview: Days of Our Lives Stud Freddie Smith Talks About His Character Sonny’s Gay Bullying & Romance Storyline.

Bing: More about “Days of Our Lives” | Freddie Smith
MSN TV: After all this time, Sonny suddenly planted a kiss on Will: What was he thinking?
Freddie Smith: In the past he’s respected Will’s boundaries and the process of Will’s coming out. He didn’t want to pressure him. He wanted Will to feel comfortable with who he is before he makes any decisions. He was also torn between, “This is my best friend. If I tell him I love him or that I have a crush on him, is he not going to be friends with me anymore?” It’s that whole cat and mouse thing. When he found out Will might be dead or something bad might have happened and then he saw Will okay, as a friend and a crush, he was like, “Oh my god I’ve got a kiss you. I love you.”From what fans saw in the post-Olympics teaser, Sonny didn’t get the response he was hoping to get!He didn’t, no. Will was like, “Yo, dude, what are you doing?” All Sonny’s feelings came out at once and caught Will off guard. It wasn’t a romantic, “Oh we like each other.” It was more like: Boom! I’m kissing you, whether you like it or not. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.Do you think these two belong together?I think so. They have a lot in common and can both bring something great to the relationship. If they come together, I think they can become a great power couple.
The kiss was also, oddly, spurred on by T.’s return and the way he laid right into Will, attacking him for being gay. What can you tell us about the bullying storyline that kicked off today?
T. comes back into town more angry than before. What’s immature is he blames Sonny for changing Will, because he finds out Will came out of the closet, so he’s just on a mission. He takes Salem by storm. He makes a grand entrance, I’ll tell you that, and it becomes very intense between the two of them. But it doesn’t just end with a confrontation. It shows the aftermath. It shows how T. deals with it, how friends and family deal with it, how Sonny deals with it. It’s very three-dimensional.
Sonny has always been so confidant in who he is and more or less kept his cool with T., in the past. How will T.’s anger and negativity affect him this time?
Sonny thought this was all over. He was there for Will. He went through the process of coming out and went through bullying before. He’s like, “I’m comfortable with who I am. My family and friends love me. I don’t have to deal with this anymore.” So when it does happen, he’s taken back. It’s like, “When is this going to end?” It’s emotional. He has a great scene with his dad about this whole thing. He’s like, “Why is someone hating on me just because I’m gay?” I can’t get into the way he deals with it, but he does deal with it. It’s a process.
Sonny is such a strong guy. When push comes to shove and T. gets physical this week, it’s hard to imagine him not standing up for himself.
If someone pushes you, you can’t just deck him in the face. You can’t always solve your problems with violence. Sonny takes the high road. He wants to talk about it, where T.’s like, “I don’t want to talk about it.” It’s an interesting dynamic and shows how Sonny has grown into himself. The bullying storyline is great. It tells a great story, but also wraps up in the perfect amount of time. It’s not drawn out, at all.
While dealing with this bully, Sonny is also dealing with his feelings for Will and some romantic tension with Brian (Brant Daugherty). Should fans be preparing for a Will/Sonny/Brian love triangle?
This thing is more of a five or six-sided shape than a triangle! It just stems off. It’s just a mess.
Will’s ex Gabi is part of that mess after the exes sleep together! In the wake of the Melanie drama, has Gabi learned her lesson? Or is she going to start playing her games with the boys?
Ugh, I don’t know what I can touch on with Gabi’s storyline, so I don’t even want to go there! She’s her crazy self, and a lot of people are involved. This is one of the central storylines coming up. It’s not just a cutaway to me and Will or me and Brian. Everyone’s involved.
So you won’t be sequestered in “the gay storyline”?
That’s what’s important and that’s what took awhile, too. I started off as the first gay character and that’s what people were talking about. Now, people just call me “Sonny.” They understand that him being gay is just a small part of who he is. Romance is involved, but it’s also shows you who Sonny is, aside from his gay romance. He has a lot to deal with. He’s got his work, his friends, his family, his problems.
Some fans were worried Salem’s two gay boys would just fall right into happily ever after, but it sounds like they’re instead being thrown into some classic soaptastic drama.
Exactly. I give the studio, the producers and the writers so much props, because they’re not tiptoeing around the gay romance. That was important to me. I was like, “Give us a three-dimensional gay storyline.” So many people are on board. My phone goes off constantly. I get endless tweets and I wish I could answer and say, “This is happening,” but I can’t. That’s the surprise of watching, but I think everyone’s going to enjoy what’s going on with Sonny’s character. You’re going to see different shades of Sonny. The audience knows Sonny’s perfect self: he’s Mr. Mature and Mr. Positive. But he’s going to make some mistakes and you’re going to see how he learns from them and grows as a character and a person. I’m so excited. I’ve been working nonstop and I can’t wait for people to tune in, because I have so many fans. I thank them all, and they’re finally going to get what they want – more Sonny.
“Days of Our Lives” airs weekdays on NBC.
Bad News Soap Fans: Spoilers Indicate Next Week On Days Of Our Lives Gay Character Will Horton Has Sex With A Woman & Sonny Gets Gay Bashed!!!
According to the spoilers next week, for the NBC soap Days of Our Lives the gay character Will Horton played by Chandler Massey is going to have grief sex with his ex girlfriend Gabi Hernandez! Gabi and Will broke up last year because she suspected he is gay. So now Gabi and Will are going to have sex? It doesn’t make any sense! The logical conclusion is, Days of Our Lives is trying to appease multiple audiences and NBC is afraid of upsetting their sponsors.
It is strange to see this kind of homophobia by NBC because I am a Canadian. On Canadian television gay and lesbian characters have thrived since the 1980s.
Canadian television is a million miles ahead of American television in relation to the topic of homosexuality.
I remember watching Degrassi Junior High in the 1980s and Caitlin thought she was a lesbian and had a crush on her teacher Miss Avery.
One of Caitlin’s friends, Kathleen accuses Caitlin of being a lesbian because she was jealous of her.
Even Suzy, Caitlin’s best friend asked her if she was a lesbian.
At the end of the episode, Caitlin realized she isn’t lesbian and Miss Avery is not gay.
In the mid 1980s, lesbianism discussed in an honest and truthful manner on mainstream Canadian television!
Degrassi Junior High dealt with a serious topic of a young girl questioning her sexuality in a mature and honest manner.
Sometimes, I forget that America is not as progressive as Canada in relation to LGBT issues.
Another point to consider is, on Days of Our Lives, Freddie Smith his character Sonny who is Will`s love interest gets gay bashed by this homophobic jerk Tad.
So why couldn’t Days of Our Lives allow Sonny and Brian to have killer hot sex? Wouldn’t it be amazing if Sonny and Brian got to roll around in a bed naked all sweaty, panting, and making out? Well, since Days of Our Lives is an American soap it will be a cold day in hell before the audience gets to see an authentic gay male sex scene!
A lot of people online are very upset because for the past year Days of Our Lives promised the soap fans that Will and Sonny will have a gay romance.
Since Will just came out this year, his character has grown more confident in accepting his homosexuality. So why would Days make Will have sex with a woman?
Days of Our Lives is destroying Will and making him bisexual instead of gay.
Meanwhile, Will`s love interest Sonny is basically asexual. Sonny is supposed to be gay yet he has never kissed another guy until next week or had sex.
The hypocrisy of daytime television in America is abhorrent. The heterosexual characters can have sex scenes rolling around in bed together but Sonny, Will, and Brian can’t have a love scene in a bed!
The spoilers indicate next week Monday, Sonny kisses Will but he is rejected. Will tells Sonny he only sees him as a friend and not as a potential boyfriend. Of course, Sonny is hurt and he accuses Will of being a closet case and not proud to be gay. Will runs off to his grandmother Marlena the town shrink to figure out his feelings. Marlena tries to get Will to see he is sexually attracted to Sonny and give love a chance.
Meanwhile, on the next episode next week Tuesday, Sonny runs into Brian an attractive openly gay man played by Brant Daugherty. Brian warned Sonny in July that Will Horton has a lot of baggage and he is wasting his time with him. Will sees Brian and Sonny and he freaks out and runs away.
Will runs off and he somehow ends up in Gabi`s bed and they have sex. The only reason I can think of Will and Gabi having sex is she is going to get pregnant. The beautiful Camila Banus is the scheming Gabi Hernandez. Gabi`s last storyline she attempted to smash Chad and Melanie`s relationship by hiring a stalker to chase her around Salem. However, the stalker Andrew turned out to be psycho and he kidnapped Melanie. Chad finds out next week that Andrew and Gabi worked together and he kicks her out of his apartment.
The anger many soap fans have is, Days of Our Lives is promoting homophobia. Gay men we are sexually attracted to other men not women! Will having sex with Gabi promotes a homophobic message that all a gay man needs is a hot woman to turn him straight.
Also, Sonny getting gay bashed is a recycled storyline from One Life To Live two years ago! In the year 2009, the character Nick got gay bashed and he used the bashing incident to come between the gay couple Kyle and Oliver. Kyle and Oliver are the only gay male couple on American daytime television to have a gay sex scene! In fact, on One Life To Live Kyle and Oliver had multiple kissing scenes and they even talked about safer sex and using condoms.
Days of Our Lives is upsetting a lot of soap fans it is the year 2012 it is time for NBC to treat gay men with dignity and respect. I am cognizant that Days of Our Lives core audience is heterosexual women. However, since Days decided to have a couple gay men on the show of course the audience demands the gay male characters be treated just like the straight characters. If Melanie and Chad can have sex then so can Will, Sonny, and Brian!
LA Complex Season 2 Episode 2: Kal Attempted Suicide & In The Hospital. He Admits To Himself He Is Homosexual.
In this episode Kal ends up in the hospital after his failed suicide attempt. For far too long television shows make coming out too simplistic that all a person needs to do is accept himself for being gay. However, let’s say if the individual coming out isn’t white and doesn’t identify with the narrative of the mainstream community about homosexuality?
I think this is where the power lies in the Kaldrick storyline because it can be extremely difficult for gay black men to come out. After a black gay man comes out which community is really going to support him? The mainstream white gay community has problems with racism and the black community has issues with homophobia.
The intersectionality of Kaldrick’s identity crosses multiple lines he isn’t just a black man or a gay man he is both.
The LA Complex has done a good job to illustrate that coming out is not easy for gay black men. Kal probably feels like he would be viewed as less than a man in the black community if he did come out of the closet. Of course, some black people are accepting of homosexuality but others are not. There is also a narrative that some black people believe that homosexuality is foreign to black culture.
LA Complex Season Two Premiere: Gay Couple Tariq & Kal Breaks Up Because Of Domestic Violence!!
I am conflicted about the LA Complex’s gay storyline between because a part of me loves the fact it focuses on a black gay male couple. I enjoy the chemistry between Benjamin Watson and Andra Fuller. Watson and Fuller are committed to their roles that I believe there is passion between their characters Tariq and Kal. It is rare to see young, masculine, black gay men on mainstream television.
However, I am disgusted at the stereotypes of black masculinity and sexuality. First, the character Kal is a down low rapper, he’s an ex con, and he’s a violent thug.
Kal is abusive towards Tariq he treats him like dirt and he brutally beats Tariq it is simply too abhorrent to watch!
Black men we are already stigmatized by a hostile and racist white society through essentialism. It is easy for racists to believe that black men are violent and dangerous.
I guess it was just impossible for the LA Complex writers to create a story about a loving and positive black gay relationship?
There is a paucity of representation of black gay men on television, yet LA Complex has to present a negative image of black gay men.
It just seems like the LA Complex writers have ticked off all the racist and negative stereotypes about gay black men. Isn’t there another way to explore a black gay male relationship without violence? Couldn’t the writers have found another way to make conflict and compelling storylines for Tariq and Kal?
There are many black gay men we are confident and proud about our homsoexuality. I am aware there are closeted black gay men who struggle with being gay and black.
Was it necessary for the LA Complex writers to have Kal beat up his boyfriend Tariq? I am cognizant there are closeted down low black men out there. However, would a white gay male couple be treated the same way? I can’t recall ever seeing a white gay male couple on television involved in such a dysfunctional and violent relationship on television.
I think the LA Complex missed an opportunity to create a positive and loving gay black male relationship by focusing simply using violence to entertain the audience.
Explosive Blind Item: Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise Divorce Settled Quickly Because He Was Afraid His Homosexual Relationships With David Beckham, Will Smith, & John Travolta Would Be Revealed!!!
[BlindGossip] When the person who appears to have the power in a relationship backs down quickly in a dispute, you know that there have to be some compelling reasons why. Although all the talk up to this point has been about his involvement with a powerful group, there were actually three other reasons he settled so quickly.
Here are the three reasons: 1. His very personal relationship with a professional athlete. 2. His very personal relationship with a musician. 3. His very personal relationship with a famous actor.
She was ready and willing to expose all three relationships to get what she wanted. The scandal of having these three famous people deposed by attorneys about their sexual relationships would have destroyed all four men. So, he gave her the thing she wanted most so that his biggest secret could remain a secret.
My Guess:
Him: Tom Cruise
Her: Katie Holmes
1. Athlete: David Beckham
2. Musician: Will Smith
3. Actor: John Travolta
His biggest secret: Katie wants sole custody of her daughter Suri. Tom Cruise is homosexual and he is terrified that Katie would reveal the explosive information about his homosexual conquests with A list superstars. The three personal relationships Tom Cruise had were with three powerful men!
Remember, no A list male movie star has ever come out of the closet. Female movie fans prefer their A list male stars to be heterosexual because they have the fantasy they can fall in love with the male star.
Also, Blind Gossip already hinted in a previous blind that Katie caught Tom in bed with the bisexual British soccer player David Beckham. Tom is close friends with Will Smith and John Travolta and both are connected to scientology. Will Smith is not just an actor he is also a famous musician.
Rumours swirl that Will Smith and John Travolta are at least bisexual. Travolta’s gay massage sex scandal is still in the news and he has also tried very hard to stay in the closet. The American tabloid Star Magazine published an article stating Will Smith is bisexual and in a sexual relationship with fellow actor Duane Martin. Will Smith is also not straight contrary to popular belief of his fans.
LA Complex Gay Clips: Tariq & Kal Hot Make Out Scenes Season Two Premieres July 17th On MuchMusic!!!
At the end of the first season of the Muchmusic soap LA Complex, Kal beat up Tariq because he was fearful Dynasty and his crew would find out he is gay.
I really enjoyed the Tariq and Kal gay romance because it is so rare to see gay black men in love on television.
Andre Fuller and Ben Watson are gorgeous!
Fuller and Watson are fearless in their romantic scenes and the passion is powerful and feels real.
I liked the fact that Kal and Tariq personalities are different and that their love was starting to grow.
Benjamin Watson and Andre Fuller are excellent actors and their physical chemistry is tremendous.
However, I am still disappointed that the LA Complex writers felt it was necessary for Kal to brutally beat up Tariq. I think it was lazy writing by the writers in order to keep the gay storyline dramatic.
I am not disputing that domestic violence does not occur in gay male relationships. However, since there is a paucity of black gay men on television was it necessary to make their relationship violent? I am concerned about the negative racist and sexist stereotypes that exist in society about queer black men.
I will tune into Much Music on July 17th to see the aftermath of the domestic violence scene. I wonder, will Tariq take Kal back? Is Tariq going to press charges against Kal for domestic violence?
Or will the writers simply end the relationship between the two men? I am intrigued by this storyline because it is nice to see gay black men on a television show who aren’t cardboard gay stereotypes. I am glad that Tariq or Kal aren’t drag queens, cross dressers, or effeminate that’s a real relief. It is nice to see two masculine gay black men on a prime time soap opera.
Blind Item: James Franco & Jake Gyllenhaal Were An Item But Drama Ended Homosexual Relationship.
[LaineyGossip] Both are acclaimed actors. One’s an actor you find super cute. He’s popular and adorable, like dimples and old fashioned dresses. The other’s an actor I find super gross. And dramatic. And full of his own shit. He fronts like he’s dark. He’s difficult. The work is often beneath him. The work is often taken away from him because the attitude that it is beneath him is so often intolerable. The two had a torrid affair. Which is nothing unusual, of course not. Except that dimples broke up with drama and drama practically had a psychotic break. There was a month-long spiral. A couple of times he came close to really hurting himself. He also threatened to expose them both, though no one is taking that seriously. As a result, his heartbreaker is trying, ignorantly, to go back to the other side of his bisexuality.
My Guess
Cute Dimples: Jake Gyllenhaal
Gross Drama: James Franco
The blind says one gay guy is cute and simple while the other man is dramatic. Jake Gyllenhaal is the cute dimples guy and James Franco is definitely seems full of himself and he presents the image he is a tortured artist. After the actor Brad Renfro died Franco actually cut himself and he designed a switch blade in memory of Renfro. Franco has made it very blatant that he’s at least bisexual. Last year, in an interview with Playboy magazine Franco insinuated that he’s bisexual. Franco is also very passionate about gay and lesbian studies. I am not suggesting a heterosexual man could not be interested in Queer studies. However, anyone who has seen Franco’s biopic film The Broken Tower about gay poet Hart Crane can read between the lines. Franco is very passionate about male homosexuality and I believe he uses art as a medium to explore his bisexuality.
