Jamaica’s New Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller Says Homosexuals Can Serve In Her Cabinet!!!

Is Jamaica changing the negative perception that the Caribbean nation is anti gay? Jamaica’s new Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller seems to have more progressive views about homosexuals than the former male Jamaican Prime Ministers. I sincerely hope Ms. Simpson Miller isn’t just providing lip service and she will push for change in Jamaican society for gays and lesbians. Of course, a lot of Jamaicans KNOW gay people there is a don’t ask don’t tell kind of attitude there. For instance, the middle and upper class Jamaicans have a more relaxed attitude towards homosexuality.

I applaud Ms. Simpson Miller for taking the first step and making this statement!  Of course, Jamaica has a long way to go to improve the quality of life for gays and lesbians. Verbal, physical, and emotional violence is still a serious problem in Jamaica.  I think Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller deserves respect for speaking out about this contentious issue.
