Jamaica Gleaner Article: Gay HIV Positive Homeless Men Need Help Say Jamaican AIDS Group From Government.

New Kingston gay and HIV homeless need help — HIV activists

JAMAICA Aids Support for Life (JASL) is calling on the Government to make provisions to house homeless gay men in New Kingston whose numbers have been steadily increasing over the years.

Chairman of JASL, Ian McKnight, feels that while the issue might not sit well with a number of taxpayers, the situation transcends personal or religious beliefs and, instead, is a matter that should be tackled by the administration.

MCKNIGHT… housing is one of those amenities that Government has an obligation to provide

“Organisations can only bite off a chewable piece of the whole pie,” McKnight said, pointing to the fact that non governmental organisations (NGOs) like his can only do so much and no more without significant support from Government.

“The ultimate responsibility belongs to Government. Government has the responsibility to ensure that all its citizens, and, in particular, those ostracised from mainstream society are taken care of. In this case, housing is one of those amenities that Government has an obligation to provide,” McKnight said in an interview with the Observer.

He argued that because of the level of bigotry among Jamaicans, many stigmatised sections of the population like these men fall through the cracks, with it being socially acceptable not to provide for them. Many of them have taken to strolling the streets as male prostitutes and have been the source of complaints from residents of New Kingston, who say they have become a public nuisance.

While some persons may not agree with spending money on shelter for these homeless homosexuals, it is the right thing for the country to do, McKnight insisted.

“The average taxpayer is not going to be happy about such a thing. But providing amenities for citizens is not something that you can decide who is treated well and who is not treated well based on how people feel. That is a human right of citizens — and in this case, we are talking about the MSM (men who have sex with men) population.”

McKnight also pointed out that there were things Jamaicans were required to do, regardless of whether or not they agree with it.

“One of the most current examples is that many people who use seat belts when they’re driving, they don’t like it, especially if you buy a car and it doesn’t have any seat belt and you have to spend more to put seat belts in there. People don’t like to pay taxes, but they have to do it,” McKnight said.

“So Government must stop fooling themselves into thinking that people only do things that they like. There are things that the Government will have to do that may not be favourable among the majority of people, but they must be done.”

McKnight said that while it would be very costly to house all the homeless living in abandoned buildings and gullies in the New Kingston area, he feels that shelter should be provided for those forced out of their homes and communities and onto the streets as a result of their sexual preference.

Many of them, he said, are vulnerable to being beaten by the police, attacked by men riding motorbikes and stoned by those bent on ridding them from society.

Executive director of JASL, Kandasi Levermore agreed, on the basis that their HIV status makes these homeless men more vulnerable.

“This is the Government’s responsibility, with a growing community that is at increased risk,” Levermore said.

“Not just for HIV/AIDS but other health outcomes and just their own personal outcomes. JASL bears it all the time, once something happens with this community or any faction of the HIV community, then JASL is called to bear (the burden). And I must tell you that is a bit unfair,” said Levermore.

She said that with its limited resources, the assistance that the organisation can offer these young men may not necessarily be what they needed.

“The help that we can give these guys — I don’t know if that is the help that they want. Because what we don’t have is — we don’t have houses to offer to these guys for them to live in. We don’t have a place of abode to give them,” she said.

“What we do have are HIV services. We have our clinical services where these guys can come in. They are offered counselling services, adherence counselling, they are able to see a medical doctor and get their prescription for ARVs (antiretroviral drugs) that they can fill at any drug store/pharmacy. That is the kind of services we do offer.”

JASL — and a similar NGO working with the New Kingston homeless gays, Jamaica Forum for Lesbians All Sex and Gays (JFLAG) — are both funded by grants received from international donor partners, with the Ministry of Health assisting them largely through the national HIV/AIDS progragramme.

Levermore said, however, despite the lack of income geared towards a housing solution for the homeless MSM, she does not get the impression that the Government has washed it’s hands of the plight of the homosexual community.

“In fact, I can tell you that (concerning HIV/AIDS), that sector, a lot of work has gone into working with this population, and JASL has championed that work. But it’s at a stage where the demands are more than the supply, especially with the MSM homeless community. We are not able to give them at this time all that they are asking. I think, ultimately, they want to be able to have somewhere to live. Whether or not they are open to somewhere outside of the city, I don’t know.”

She also argued that even with additional help from the Government and other aid groups, the individuals directly affected have a responsibility to themselves.

“Even though we are working in HIV/AIDS, individual responsibility is a key ingredient in any kind of prevention work that we’ll ever be able to do. And, as such, if individuals themselves are not demonstrating their own responsibility to their own self, it makes it a million times harder for organisations like JASL,” Levermore said, pointing to problems getting the gay prostitutes to practice safe sex.

This, she said, is where the NGOs “are not seeing significant changes in behaviour that is showing a personal commitment”.

“It can’t be a situation where I want this for you, but you are not seeing where you want it for yourself. And that has been a serious gap,” she said.

“We can say to you there are other factors — social and cultural factors — that are driving the behaviours. Because they (male prostitutes) will tell you when they are negotiating their sexual encounters, it is about who is going to pay, how much they are going to pay, and all of that goes into their calculation as to whether or not they utilise the condom. So their situation do always put them at greater risk.”

Focus group discussions have been held where the young men were encouraged to state their needs and concerns. After this, JFLAG undertook personal development workshops with them conducted by trained counsellors. But, according to Levermore, even this failed.

“So we are at a stage where all the strategies we have engaged so far — JAS and JFLAG — they have not reaped the kind of success that a funding agency will look at and say ‘let us see how we can contribute to fund and support such programmes’,” she explained.

“The guys are not progressing into any other thing. So even if we have situations where we had remedial classes, the attendance was poor, so the funding agencies were not able to continue. It’s not for fear of trying; we have done counselling, we had psychology, we went as far as had focus groups with Dr Peter Weller, and through all of that JAS and JFLAG facilitated over the last year-and-a-half, minimum, and it was not progressing.”

The men were also introduced to a greenhouse project geared at generating income by growing and selling plants. This too did not work.

“I am really not sure what would work,” the executive director said.

Interesting News: Online Petition Asks Sesame Street To Perform Gay Marriage For Bert & Ernie!!!

Should Bert and Ernie tie the knot?

Bert and Ernie: Is it time for them to register at Pottery Barn?Bert and Ernie: Should they register at Pottery Barn?

It has long been suspected that Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie are more than just friends. After all, the longtime roommates share a bedroom.

Now, there’s a petition on the website Change.org asking PBS to bring these Muppets out of the closet and throw them a wedding. The group behind the petition thinks a marital union between Bert and Ernie would help kids become more accepting of their LGBT peers.

With New York legalizing same-sex marriage, is it time for the dynamic duo to tie the knot?

Nearly 5,000 people have signed the petition that reads: “In this horrific age of LGBT kids taking their own lives, they need to know that they ARE BEAUTIFUL and their lives are worth living. Aside from those that are committing suicide, the bullies that facilitate these tragedies need to learn that homophobia is NOT okay. They need to know that acceptance of their fellow human beings would indeed plant a seed of peace that will reverberate throughout the world. We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful. Only that they allow Bert & Ernie to marry or even add a transgender character to the show. It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different. Let Sesame Street and PBS Kids be a big part in saving many worthy lives.”

The Bert and Ernie Get Married Facebook page has over 2,000 comments–with some applauding the idea of a Bert and Ernie wedding, and others asking that this movement be stopped immediately:

Tyler Knight writes in: “As my kids say (ages 8, 5 & 3) Sometimes boys marry boys and girls marry girls. Just like Mommy married Daddy. It doesn’t matter as long as you have your best friend by your side. I think this is a message all children can benefit from. Celebrate differences early and then you don’t have the hate that is coming forth on this page.”

Kim Green disagrees: “When my child is old enough to understand SEXUALITY then I will expose him to all forms of it. I don’t knock ANYONE’s lifestyle, but come on…REALLY?! How do you explain to a 2 year old that two PUPPET males are getting married? What ever happened to teaching them about general FRIENDSHIP?! This isn’t a hate comment at all, but for those who believe this would be “educational” obviously know nothing about EDUCATON! -VERY DISTURBED EDUCATOR”

What do you think? Should Bert and Ernie get married?

Socialist Worker Online Article: British Riots Erupted Due To Racism, Poverty, & Unemployment In England!!!

Riots: ‘One of the most powerful expressions of anger for decades’

The killing of Mark Duggan is the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Years of anger at police racism and poverty has exploded into one of the most powerful expressions of anger for decades.

But the response from the politicians, media and police—and from some that should know better—has been to be blame the victims.

Young people have nothing to look forward to but police harassment and a depressing struggle to make ends meet. And they are now being subjected to the rage of the real criminals—our rulers—for having the audacity to do what they do.

As one “rioter” during the Tottenham rebellion when asked if he was worried about going to prison said, “Well at least you get three square meals a day inside”.

Inside

When it comes to thieving, politicians have been doing it for years—except they call it “claiming expenses”.

They are joined by the biggest gang in the country—the institutionally corrupt and racist Metropolitan Police that takes money from Murdoch’s press to do the bidding of his vile newspapers.

And of course the biggest looters try and stay in the background—the bankers who have gutted public finances and now want us to pay. The youth on the streets know this only too well.

Compared to robbing the taxpayer to build a moat around your country home, taking trainers from an insured corporation is nothing.

The comic papers and the police criminals tell us that the riots represent mindless violence. That’s not true.

The destruction of property has been targeted. One of the first properties to go up in flames on Tottenham High Road was that of the police solicitor.

Other businesses targeted were the bookmakers William Hill, Barclays Bank, the post office, Aldi supermarket and Carpet Right, which is owned by a Tory lord.

No one set out to try and kill or injure those living above those premises. They were venting their anger against an unequal society.

Karl Marx was exactly right when he talked about expropriating the expropriators, taking back what they have taken from us. That’s what looting by poor working class people represents and in that sense it is a deeply political act.

And as far as violence goes, that was aimed at the police who carry out violent attacks on working class communities on a daily basis, especially against black male youth.

Outrage

The continuing outrage of deaths in police custody goes on and still not a single policeman has gone to prison for any of the hundreds of such killings. That’s what I call violent criminality.

Many of our self-appointed community leaders are fond of invoking the words and memory of Martin Luther King. But it was Martin Luther King who said riots are the voice of the oppressed. Tottenham 2011 is no different to Harlem 1964.

We’ve heard about the heart of the community being ripped out. What nonsense. There are hardly any shops worth shopping in on the High Road—they moved out years ago. That’s why most of the looting was at the retail park and in Wood Green.

Tottenham has been gutted by unemployment, and cuts. A few bankers’ bonuses could make amends for the damage to property in Tottenham. But nothing will bring back Mark Duggan, allegedly executed by police.

When organised workers rebel they go on strike.

When alienated working class youth rebel they take to the streets—and sometimes riot.

The job of socialists is to unite the two wings of the struggle against the regime of the rich running this country, and take back what is ours. Turn riot into revolution.

Independent article: Australian Finance Minister Penny Wong Says Her Partner Is Having Her Baby But Same Sex Marriage Still illegal In Australia.

Lesbian minister’s pregnancy fails to sway PM on gay marriage

    • Photos
    • Australia’s finance minister announced yesterday that she is expecting a child with her female partner, but although Prime Minister Julia Gillard offered her warmest congratulations, she refused to budge in her opposition to gay marriage.

Penny Wong’s partner, Sophie Allouache, conceived through IVF using donor sperm and is expecting in December. The news has reignited debate over same-sex partnership in the country.

There are increasing calls for Ms Gillard’s centre-left Labor Party to lift its ban on gay marriages at their conference in December, but while the Premier said she was “very pleased” for Ms Wong, 42, and Ms Allouache, 35, she stood firm in her view that wedlock should be reserved for a man and a woman.

“Clearly there are strong views about same-sex marriage in the community,” Ms Gillard said. “There are strong views in the political party I lead, and we’ll have a debate at national conference about those strongly held views. I’ve made my views clear.”

Ahead of the Labor Party conference, Ms Wong – the only openly-gay member of Ms Gillard’s cabinet – has supported changing the party’s stance, but she stressed yesterday that she did not want her unborn child to become part of the argument.

“You have a child because you want a family and you want to have the opportunity of raising a child together. You don’t have a child to make a political statement,” she told The Sydney Morning Herald. “I don’t want to engage in the policy debate about these issues in the context of something that is so deeply personal and so lovely. Children need to be loved, nurtured and respected, and our child will be.”

Although there is a strong socially-conservative element in the Australian electorate, particularly in rural areas, Ms Gillard is looking increasingly out of step on the issue. At the weekend, Tasmania became the seventh of Australia’s eight states where the Labor Party has passed a motion supporting gay marriage. There is also increasing public support for gay marriage, which has recently been legalised in six US states. Various polls in Australia have put support for gay marriage as high as 70 per cent.

There were congratulations from across the political spectrum yesterday for Ms Wong and her partner, while Peter Furness, of the Australian Marriage Equality group, used the opportunity to highlight the importance of marriage. “Marriage can benefit children by providing them with a greater sense of security and recognition,” he told The Age newspaper.

But there are still some right-wing figures determined to make themselves heard. “She needn’t have made it public,” said Fred Nile, an MP from New South Wales and leader of the Christian Democrat Party. “It just promotes their lesbian lifestyle and

WNBA Star Sheryl Swoopes Announces She Is No Longer A Lesbian & She Is Marrying A Man.

Swoopes Marrying Man After Coming Out

Swoopes Marrying Man After Coming Out

Sheryl Swoopes and fiancé Chris Unclesho (AfterEllen.com)

Six years after three-time WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes came out, announcing her relationship with then-girlfriend Alisa Scott, she has announced that she’s engaged … to a man. Cue the confusion. She’s been called everything from “no longer” a lesbian to NSGAA (“not so gay after all”). The Huffington Post’s Maya Rupert says this approach erroneously relies on Swoopes’ current relationship status to define her identity. And if you’re more familiar with sports than you are with the nuances of sexual orientation, she has a basketball analogy for you.

      Read a few excerpts here:

This conflation of a person’s current romantic relationship with their identity is a big part of why the “B” in LGBT has remained virtually invisible in the sports world and in the broader culture …

Interestingly, as I’ve found myself defending Swoopes in the wake of her announcement, I’ve noticed that the argument is shockingly similar to another point of controversy in professional basketball. In order to understand Swoopes’ identity in a way that can envision this type of fluidity, you have to understand the role and value of a combo guard.

A combo guard is a guard who combines skills associated with both a point guard (excellent ball-handling and an ability to make plays and set up teammates to score) and a shooting guard (primary scorer on the floor). A combo guard is often listed as a point guard, but does not play as a pure or typical point guard …

But it’s a mistake to think that we can take a snapshot of a person’s relationship at a given moment and assume we can tell their identity, just like it’s a mistake to think we can take a snapshot of a person’s role on a court at a given moment and determine their position. We don’t ask for that type of rigidity in basketball, and we cannot ask for it in identity.
