Is The British Soap Emmerdale Promoting The Wrong Message That Disabled People Should Commit Suicide?
I am cognizant that the British soap Emmerdale is just a television show. However, I wonder if the writers are promoting a terrible message about people with disabilities? Marc Silcock’s character Jackson will commit suicide on tomorrow’s episode. There were no scenes involving a support group or psychotherapy for Jackson. There were no scenes involving a social worker or psychologist helping Jackson with his depression.
The subliminal message is, people with disabilities are less important than able bodied people. I don’t like this message because I feel it is deleterious. People with disabilities are devalued in this world because they are viewed as inferior.
Another point to consider is, why does Jackson have to die?
There is a consistent homophobic narrative in the television and movies that gay men we are depressed, suicidal people. Why does a gay relationship have to be so unhappy and full of despair? I think the Emmerdale writers are homophobic, the easiest way to not allow the characters Aaron and Jackson to express their homosexual desires is to basically kill off their relationship.
Fans on both sides of the Atlantic ocean are split about the decision of the writers to kill off Jackson. I believe the whole Jackson storyline is a total copout to not explore the homosexual relationship between Aaron and Jackson. There is hardly any passion between Aaron and Jackson for a long time. Tomorrow Jackson will die but the Emmerdale writers really blew a huge opportunity to deal with a serious issue with class.
