Hi. I just discovered you insightful and very interesting blog site. I’m an American gal, who lived for about 2 years in Toronto area. I’m married to a Canadian whom I met and married in my native California.
While living (lanquishing) in Canada, I was continuously subjected to Anti-American biased treatment. And as a black person, I know how to deal with rascism, but Anti-Americanism? Canadians are extremely quick to make viscious remarks about Americans, and go on and on about how Canada is better, health care is free (the mega taxes we paid say’s otherwise), Americans are so dumb and violent, etc, etc, etc. But why would a country so full of well-mannered, educated, healthy (all the free healthcare), and Anti-American spen sooooo much time obssessing about Americans?! It’s almost all that Canadians seem to think/talk about! Canadians seem to have this major inferiority comlex regarding the U.S.! There’s major passive-aggression issues at play up there!
Has any other Americans had similar experiences in Canada? There’s not much on the internet about how Americans feel about Canada, but there’s a lifetime of reading material about what Canadians think about America! Canadians chime in anywhere and everywhere the word Canada appears if it’s related in anyway to American opinions. Again…. that passive-aggressive obssession with America.
Why are Canadians so over-whelmingly focused on America? It’s like you’re stalking us!
P.s. I’m sure that you’ve detected that I’ve been (temporarily) traumatized by my Canadain experience.
Hello Beeno, I think some Canadians have anxieties about America because we fear we are “becoming Americans.” For example, in Quebec the French Canadians have a distinct culture and they want to maintain their French heritage. The reason the Canadian media focus so much on the United States is America is the neighbour to Canada. Also, in terms of pop culture America is a superpower. Most of the television shows, movies, and day time television shown in Canada are American. I believe in Canada there seems to be a love hate relationship with the United States. On the one hand, Canadians love American culture because Canadian culture is so boring and white bread. I can’t stand Canadian television most of the shows suck, I hate hockey, and Molson Beer too. I love American culture. Although America isn’t perfect I think American culture is interesting.
Wow, those stats are impressive!! Make one want to give the best writing he/she has to satisfy all those visitors!!!
Hi Anna Renee? Really you think the stats are impressive? Thank you very much for your comment.
Yes, same experience. I’m an american woman, south american in background and fairly dark skinned. I moved to Canada in 2002 because I hated George Bush. I was raised in a liberal house hold, went to a very liberal college, and always believed Canada was everything the United States should have been.
Today, after nearly 10 years of living Canada, I can assure you my attitudes have done a 180 degree turn. The most disappointing thing to me has been attempting to make friends in Canada. They appear polite, they tell you how friendly they are, but I am rarely invited to someone’s home. It is difficult to ever really know where people stand, because they keep their opinions to themselves, but I do quickly learn they don’t care much for the United States to an extent I never knew when I lived in the US. I always assumed Canadians were our friends, because I never heard anyone I knew say anything but positive things about Canada. Canadians, however, seem to despise most Americans, and if anything goes wrong in a personal interaction, the fact that you are from the US quickly enters into their anger towards you…which seems to blow from zero to 100. So much for that Mr Nice Guy exterior.
I think there is a lot of passive aggressiveness in the english Canadian personality…I can’t really speak for people from Quebec, although the handful I have met, while more visibly anti-american, were friendlier and hospitable.
I am headed back to the United States this year, because I can’t take this much longer. I came with such high hopes, and am leaving a Canada cynic. The taxes are too high, the 7 hour waits in the ER too long, and the ‘joie de vivre’ pretty much non existant for me. I miss the US and the easy going friendliness of most of the people I grew up with.
The funny thing is, some Americans can say things that sound really racist, and then the next time you see them they have a black or latino girlfriend or boyfriend. That racist comment is some weird american version of venting, but it doesn’t carry over into their personal life. I mean, how else, 8 years after electing George Bush, did 50% of the US vote in a black man with a muslim last name?
Meanwhile, most Canadians I’ve met make a point of sounding very open minded regarding women and other races, but you rarely see them with a ‘visible minority’ girlfriend or boyfriend or employee. It seems to be for show, but deep down inside, they still don’t want their doctors to be ‘colored’ or their pop stars or actors to be black or brown. When I want to rattle a Canadian, I say I think that our next PM should be a Pakistani woman.
The look on their faces is priceless…after the initial snort of laughter or shock. That should tell you all you need to know about how open minded Canadians truly are, as opposed to the public stance and the made for public consumption veneer
Nuff said..be well, and wherever you are from, treat others as you wish they would treat you.
