As a gay white man with a Black boy friend, this is especially interesting. Though we have no problems in the larger community (I live in NYC), we have had some difficulties in the (so-called) mainstream Black community and, more particularly, in the Gay Black community. He has run into criticism from gay Black friends who think that, in jumping the fence, he is deserting his Black roots. They also think he is trying to gain acceptance into the (so-called) mainstream white society by dating a white guy.
Not sure what the answer is, with interracial dating.
What’s kind of funny is that here in NYC, when a Black guy and a white guy, both over 30, are out together — the movies, restaurant, museum, wherever — we’re immediately tapped as gay by the general populace. So I’m not sure that, by dating me, my Black BF is gaining any smooth entry into the larger white arena. He will be gay first, then Black.
Agree with your sentiment. I see this dynamic here in Boston all the time. T think a LOT of these men have low self esteem. In many cases its a remnant of slavery.
