As an effeminate gay man, I found this vid fascinating. Especially because I was not one who followed fashion particularly close. However, a few years ago, a guy I was dating steadily happened to be very interested in fashion, from every angle. One day, he took me on one of his shopping excursions. We started out at boutiques down in SOHO (I live in NYC) and spread out to some of the larger men’s stores up in Chelsea and then department stores, such as Bloomingdales’s, etc.
Now, I’m white and he Black, so it isn’t like we fooled anyone when we entered a specific store. In NYC, if a Black guy and a white guy, both over 30, are seen at a restaurant, movie, museum, wherever, we’re nailed as gay. Case closed. But what was intriguing to me is that, as the day wore on, and we hit more and more stores, I found myself increasingly wrapped up in the fashion arena. As my BF explained various styles, why color matters, what the horizontal does to a specific figure, on and on, I was hooked. fashion from that day mattered.
I wonder if, as gay men, we don’t limit ourselves in whom we look for in boyfriends or simply guys to hang out with? Almost as if we take our cues from the straight community’s “take” on us.
I happen to love old movies — read: black & white — and several guys would turn up their noses at this. However, more than once, I’ve turned boyfriend’s on to old movies by getting them to sit down with popcorn and watch an old film.
Thanks much for all your effort, and your wonderful vids. I enjoy watching and listening to you, like hanging with an old friend.
Great good luck!
