Tyler Perry is on the Oprah show right now talking about the extreme brutal child abuse and molestation at the hands of his father that he suffered. I had no idea about this. His mom was extremely docile and was abused by Tyler’s father, but his Aunt was very strong, even carrying a gun, and threatening Tyler’s father! Tyler says that she’s Madea!
He was molested by a man when he was young!
Tyler has suffered!!!!
Even so, the boy is gay. He has never outright denied he is. If the guy won’t say, ya know he’s gay. His discussion of his Madea character was not a denial that he’s gay. He’s just saying the clergy who condemns the character are wrong about the character.
I heard about the interview on Oprah as well, I was not able to see the full coverage of the show. But either way, my heart goes out to him and he took the courage to speak on it, which many men, especially black men are often unwilling to admit. Still, people have the right to disclose whatever they choose. One thing that made me sad is a friend of mine, she commented on her facebook that Tyler Perry should just come out the closet. What made me frustrated is that one, this man has suffered so much and he not only went from being sexually abused, but physically abused, mentally isolated from family, neglected from his mother, he was homeless. And now since he makes movies and he is single, we keep going back to who is having sex with and why isn’t he married!
I believe and in agreement with person who made this blog that there should be more blacks coming out of the closet and representing our race in every shade of our people. However, we need not to make a forum about detecting one’s sexuality and making that a focus. I don’t get the impression that Mr. Perry is gay, he is in his own world and very protective of his life and things that he cares for. I don’t think that Tyler Perry if were to claim to be gay would want to be a spoke person for gay men. He is first a movie director. We don’t encourage to dip into the personal lives of directors like Martin Scorsese. I say this because, even though this director makes great movies about the lives of Mafia people, no one would dare ask him if he is related to the Mafia. So why do we as a community feel it is necessary that our black directors confirm their sexual orientation?
I know that I am going away from what is important, but i had to speak my mind on this issue. However, I am afraid that Tyler Perry admitting to be a victim of sexual abuse will open more rumors about his personal life. To me, that is sad.
John, I think it was brave for Tyler Perry to speak about being a survivor of child abuse and he was very brave to talk about the issue. However, Perry was also on Oprah to promote his new film For Colored Girls! I thought it was an odd choice by Perry to open up about his painful childhood just to promote a movie. When I watched the Oprah interview I think I understand now why Perry hides his homosexuality. I think Perry is ashamed to be gay and he feels guilty due to the fact he is so religious. I think it is sad that he cannot come out because of the homophobic black Christian community is his core audience. I think it is sad that homophobic black folks are holding Tyler Perry back from really being happy, out, and proud to be gay.
you may have a point. Because, I was not able to see the interview at all (don’t own a television set) and why talk about some deep personal stuff while promoting a movie, that is a red flag right there! thanks for pointing that out.
I think people like picking only the wrong things in life, instead of respecting what the brother has achieved they gou talk all day bout him bein gay. One of my colleagues said coz he plays madea better, what tha! Jelousy bitterness and rage is their best friend. I respect Mr Perry and I say he been helping people so God bless him lots I have never seen such talent in my life n I learn from each movie he has. Ty has been though lotsa things n this will passs jus like the others n anyway he got mr brown on his side. I just wish I meet mr brown one day. Peace
Mr. Perry,
My husband who is 73 and I am 65 love your movies we have bough then all. I feel the enemy is trying to take you down but you keep the movies coming. We.also are born again Christians and hear your message in your movies. o
One day we hope to neet you, if not we will see you in Heaven. Greater is He that is in you then he that is in the world. Our children and grandchildren and Great-grandchildren love your movies too. God Bless and keep up Gods work.
He is NOT gay. He had a rough childhood that’s all.He is a strong man and im pretty sure that if he was gay he would come out and say it. Just because he knows how to play the Madea role really well does not mean he is gay. He is a writer and a actor who knows how to play his roles well. All his movies have a deeper meaning to them and thats what makes them special. He has talent and that is really all that matters.
Tyler Perry I really admired you continue to do the work you are ding, you are blessed whatever you went through as a child I thank God you were able to educate others out there about it. Parents should real pay more aware of what is going on in the surrendings, and pay attention to their little babies.
Tyler perry….you are soooo inspiring to me

i always thought that ABC news is even better than CNN when delivering up to date news:,’
ABC is the Disney version of the news. I’m surprised it isn’t done by Pixar.
i am always comedy and science fiction TV shows at home and at work:
Very Gay
