Period! The entire system is abused, it costs US the taxpayer to house these people who take advantage of us and it’s time that it all STOPS! Living in Canada is a precious privilege and we treat it as though it’s not simply offering haven to anyone. We need to make it much more difficult to enter and we should stop accepting immigrants from 3rd world nations all together. They don’t adapt and treat our country as an extension of their own. We are losing our culture and it’s our fault! Reform needs to happen NOW! Cherie It seems that anyone from a third world country can just show up on a boat and get asylum in canada! We need new immigration laws, or else this country will be flooded with refugees and immigrants. It’s nice to help others, but at some point we need to draw a line. I think it is a better idea for core countries to try and help out third world countries a little more, so that we don’t encounter these kinds of problems. If you cannot/will not go through legal channels to get into Canada then you do not belong here. Our liberal (and warm fuzzy) approach to immigration is gradually putting us under as we pay for their stay while their stories are researched and adjudicated. Darlene I’m not sure what the exact stats are but we have to be one of the most popular places for people seeking freedom to come to. You would think that we would have strict rules in place and we that would be incredibly organized to deal with the people wanting to enter our country. I’m all for people starting a new life here but I’m sorry there have to be rules. George Absolutely the refugee system needs to be streamlined. People in European coutries, US and Australia cannot just show up and claim refugee status and get welfare and medical benefits which cost us taxpayers money without any clear benefit for Canada like chosen educated immigrants. The refugees there are chosen from UN camps which is the way the system is supposed to work. The queue jumping should not be allowed. Also, seems the news outlets seem to fail to mention that this ship was denied access to Australia and it seems we are better suckers. I can understand some compassion for these people, but whatever happens they should not be entitled to landed immigrant status in Canada and later citizenship. We cannot continue to allow people to come here in this manner and deplete the countries resources leaving nothing for those of us who were born here and worked all our lives here. I have been a Canadian citizen for 60+ years; I receive my CPP and yet I must prove my Canadian Citizenship and state the date and port where I arrived in Canada to receive any old age security payments. Why are these people allowed free entry and receive all benefits when I cannot? Liz Yes, change the whole thing the way it was when my family came here. If you can’t support yourself don’t come. This sneaky approach is wrong and abuses the rights of Canadian taxpayers. No wonder we are all hard hearted. The system is abused terribly. I see tenants in City Housing who jump the queues, get universtiy education and have their whole family added on tax payer dollars when we have to go to nightschool so we can work. Enough is enough!! WHO are we ?? We have so many immigrants that do NOT want to be CANADIAN. They come to Canada and want this country to change for them. Think back to the times when the immigrants came here for a better life. NOT ANYMORE !! They come to change this country to suit them. I think that we should have a system like the Netherlands. When you go there..they take you to a room and show you a video of life there. If there is anything you do not like, ie. pot, homsexuals, christmas , they tell you DON’T COME !! Linda Our Immigration Law is seriously flawed. Most unfortunately, it is well known to the people of the third world country who would do anything to gain this life. The humanitarian aid we need to provide for these refugees should be medical attention, food and water. No need for Canada to provide luxury and security for the criminals and terrorists to continue their destructive activity. We should send them back to where they came from. Usually, the only people who can make this type of journey are the people with means. These people are not poor. There are Canadian Embassies and Consulate Generals in their country of origin where they can claim refugee claims. They can be better assessed there and let the true refugees come into Canada. Hani I heart and prayers goes out to those who are on the refugee ship. I know first hand to how they feel because I too was on a refugee ship from Somali to Yemen in 1991. That is something you will never forget. Living in a ship where is no food, water, diseases, violent and not knowing if you were going to die not easy. Why can the gov’t afford to feed, clothe, shelter and give medical care to illegal immigrants but they can’t afford to help “their own”? As a country, we already have people who are homeless, need medical attention & jobs for which our Liberal government can’t meet. Many of these Canadians were born here & have ancestors who were born here yet we cannot access services which are provided to these migrants who cannot speak English, bring in pandemic viruses & in the case of the Tamils, terrorism. And we need this why??? I need a passport & will still get put through the ringer should I try to visit my cousins who live in Florida, but WE have to adjust our culture & traditions to accomodate these refugees. Canada has to take back its culture & take care of our own BEFORE migrants are allowed in & if they can’t contribute to society in a positive way SEND THEM BACK!!! Our immigration department is so lax taking years to investigate and by then thousands have gone underground and can’t be found. It is ridiculous. Canada is becoming the patsy of the world. If Australia can do it so can we. Until they can determined who is an honest refugee and we welcome them, put them back to their country. They obviously had the money. We have many homeless and disadvantaged people here in Canada that need to be looked after, why do Governments always forget our own people. They will suck money out of the health care system which is struggling for Canadians, so why should we suffer due to others coming in illegally. Enough is enough. I for one, I am tired of having to wait long times in E.R’s, in spite of the political mumbo jumbo we hear constantly. Listen up Politicians we do have a problem with the health carew in this Province, stop putting your heads in the sand, adding to this mess the Government is adding more refugees to the system. People born here are becoming 2nd class just to accommodate illegal immigrants. Maybe we should have them all pitch tents on Queens Park and Parliament Hill, since we pay for those places anyway. Craig All rufugee claimants arriving in any country via any means should be dealt with by the United Nations. The UN should have large medical ships available to intercept ships in international waters that are known to be carrying refugees and treat the sick offshore. The UN medical ship could then escort the refugee ship back to its home country where UN officials could discuss the refugees’ claims with government officials in the originating country and, if there is a legitimate refugee claim, the UN officials could decide which country would be best to receive these refugees with the full approval and co-operation of the receptive country’s government. Kaptin NOPE! What more do our taxes have to pay for? Don’t even allow their boat to approach shore. They need food an water? Do a helicopter drop with C-Rations and turn them around and if they push it, blow them out of the water. Sharks gotta eat too. Perhaps you think I’m cruel, but we can’t keep taking in everyone that has problems and who don’t like their own country. Our immigration system is already taxed to hell and gone. We don’t need more refugees, sorry! Why don’t they go to the U.S.? Canada IS NOT a refugee dumping ground here.
