Would Tiger Woods be better off right now if he had been banging black women? Would his marital indiscretions be getting a better play — or less attention — in the media if he was stepping out on a black wife with black women?
It is hard not to notice the distinct lack of minority women among those Tiger allegedly slept with. At least, it’s hard not to notice it when the Daily Intel lines them all up in an easy-to-gawk-at slideshow format. I’m no geneticist and I don’t know how all these women self-identify, but it’s not like Tiger was allegedly out sexing it up with Nona Gaye. And his wife looks like she’s related to Thor.
But really, we’re not dealing with Tiger and the superficial glance at the women he’s supposedly been with (that have– thus far — come forward). We’re dealing with the immense weight of cultural context and stereotypes. Media-enhanced history has us predisposed to believe that: A) White men sit around all day in fear of the black man’s penis, and B) You haven’t made it as a rich and successful black man unless you’re banging white women, two at a time if possible. Neither of those things are true, but they are part of the backdrop to the Tiger story.
Could both of these perceptions be playing into the media mega-storm surrounding Tiger Woods?
Well, of course. D’uh! It’s not right, but race is absolutely tangled up in this mess. Just ask Tom Brady.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Tom “Golden Boy” Brady impregnating people when he met current wife Gisele Bündchen? Oh, sorry, that’s right, Brady got Bridget Moynahan pregnant right before they broke up and he started dating Gisele. Uh huh, yeah, I totally believe that. Still, I don’t remember his virility with actresses and supermodels hurting Brady’s image.
Tiger is in a different situation: he’s married with kids and has apparently been hitting greens all around the world. But given the media coverage, you’d think the man kidnapped Elin and made her watch while he slept with her twin sister.
And that’s where the coverage starts to bother me. If I hear one more person say “but Elin is so attractive and all these other women are so ugly,” I’m going to throw my porn stash at somebody. First of all, cheating isn’t about attractiveness, it’s about boredom and power and opportunity. And even it was all about beauty, Elin is only attractive if you like that type. I mean, I know the media relentlessly pushes the thin, blonde, ass-less, barely pubescent stereotype of beauty, but not everybody buys into what they’ve been force fed. Christ. Stepping out on Elin Nordegren is not akin to taking an evolutionary step backwards.
Yet Tiger’s violation of someone “so beautiful” seems to be really cutting against him in the press. Because he couldn’t be satisfied with her, he must have some kind of voracious, indomitable sex drive problem. Which of course plays back into stereotypical black man’s lust that has been culturally ingrained here for centuries.
Tiger is being portrayed as a sex addict. Really, he’s just another dude that cheated on his wife when the (many) opportunities presented themselves. This makes him on par with roughly 90% of the men out there (I’m being generous to my sex). If Tiger was married to Salli Richardson-Whitfield, I think people would be treating him like a dog instead of a fiend.
Of course, Tiger wasn’t married to a pretty black woman, which lights up the other side of the racial tension motherboard. It’s almost expected now that a rich and famous black man will be linked to an endless assortment of white women. He (arguably) could go to bed with anyone he wants to, but he seems to consistently lean white. And he’s not alone in the category of black men that seem to do that.
What is up with that?
Actually, I think it’s just the other side of the same problem I explained above. If you hear a certain type of woman is attractive, a certain type of beauty is more beautiful than all other beauty — and you hear that message consistently for your entire life — well, eventually you are going to believe it. You’re going to believe it and internalize it and act accordingly. Black guys have television too.
And so Tiger finds himself almost exclusively banging white chicks for the same reason some people are angry at him for almost exclusively banging white chicks. It’s the same cultural context that is (arguably) influencing his choice in women that is contributing to the backlash against him because of his choice in women.
In a way, all of this is extremely sad since Tiger has tried so hard to be “post-racial.” He was trying that game even before Obama made it cool. But it doesn’t appear he was able to think himself out of his own preconceptions when it came to women, and it’s not like the crush of the mass media will collectively think itself out of the stereotypes now. They’re all in this paper bag together.
Of course, I don’t feel bad for Tiger. Not in the slightest. Even if he is being somewhat unfairly maligned now, the most simple solution would have been to keep it in his pants. Dealing with sexual frustration is so much easier than this racial mind-f***.

Tiger Woods has hoarded so much loot, that he can live in luxury and elegance even if he never earns another dime. We will never have the satisfaction of seeing Tiger in the poor house, but the disgraced golfer is toast as an advertising and sporting icon.
Very few editorialists and bloggers have ventured into the racial aspect of the Tiger Woods 24/7 reality show. But almost everything in America boils down to race, and I would be derelict in my duties if I didn’t explore this controversial angle.
Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama are the Holy Trinity of African Americans white folks can worship as a way of proving they aren’t racists. Millions of suburban white women worship at the temple of Oprah every weekday, and millions of white men extol the golfing prowess of Tiger Woods. Americans of all ethnicities celebrate the biracial Barry Obama as the fulfillment of Martin Luther King’s dream.
It’s going to be difficult to find another African American athlete who can step into the shoes of Tiger Woods. There are slim pickings in the sports world — we may never see the likes of Woods again. Middle America isn’t exactly enamored with the hip hop generation in the NBA, or the thugs in the NFL. And there are no blacks in baseball, right?
I don’t mean to imply that white players are paragons of virtue; most jocks are egotistical freaks who think they can break every rule in the book. Why the hell do we look to the sports world for role models? That’s like going to a brothel in search of women who can be spokespersons for abstinence only sex education.
I’m not arguing that most black NBA or NFL players are thugs; I’m talking about image vs. reality. The prevailing belief is that these major league organizations are rampant with thuggish behavior, and since the NBA is overwhelmingly black and the NFL isn’t too far behind, it’s the black players who bear the brunt of the criticisms.
If Tiger Woods had cheated on his gorgeous white wife with black women, the golfing great’s accident would have been barely a blip in the blogosphere. But by fooling around with several white women (jock sniffers and guilt-ridden white folks can pretend I used the word “allegedly”), Tiger Woods has played into the stereotype of the black man as a sexual brute who preys on white women.
Tiger Woods is damaged goods and he’s anathema to the classy corporations that he represents. These conglomerates can’t very well dump Tiger without being accused of racism. Eventually they will find ways of breaking their association with the disgraced golfer.
In a voice mail to one of his white lovers Tiger Woods says: I think my wife is onto us. Tiger Woods America is onto you, we know that the real Tiger Woods is an egotist who thinks he doesn’t have to answer to the little people. If there is a god in heaven in a few years Tiger Woods will be doing commercials for malt liquor or a pay day loan company.

By now you’ve surely heard that Tiger Woods cheated on his (white) wife with a parade of other (white) women. A new mistress or two seems to pop up every day, so the golfer’s infidelity has ceased to be the surprising news.
No, what surprised us here at NewsOne is that apparently, Black people are very upset with Tiger for his behavior. At least that’s what the Associated Press says:
“When three white women were said to be romantically involved with Woods in addition to his blonde, Swedish wife, blogs, airwaves and barbershops started humming, and Woods’ already tenuous standing among many blacks took a beating.”
Is that so? Tell me more about what I think, Associated Press!
“Black women have long felt slighted by the tendency of famous black men to pair with white women, and many have a list of current transgressors at the ready.”
Interesting. But it looks like I, and the assortment of Black women I’ve discussed this with, didn’t get the memo telling us to be salty about Tiger and his numerous “transgressions.” I’ve been hard pressed to find a Black woman who’s even remotely upset about this. Here are 5 reasons why, among some Black women, Tiger’s tart parade is NOT striking a nerve:
5) Tiger was long gone.
Woods married Elin Nordegren in October of 2004. That’s a solid 5 years we’ve had to recognize and accept that the man would never be seen rocking an “I ❤ Black Girls” t-shirt, and move on with our collective lives. Not to mention that even before the marriage, the man denied being black at all, instead dubbing himself “Cablinasian.” He hasn’t ever really been on Team Black Folks. As a result, the fact that all of Tiger’s mistresses are longhaired white women just doesn’t pack much emotional punch.
4) He cheated, but it wasn’t on one of us.
Black women know a little something about solidarity. After all, we’ve been through an awful lot: slavery, the Civil Rights struggle, even watching right-wingers hate on Michelle Obama during the 2008 election. We stick together. So if Tiger had been married to a black woman and pulled this stunt, we would absolutely be up in arms on behalf of our sister. But … Elin doesn’t exactly qualify. Right or wrong, most black women don’t readily identify with a white, blonde, billionaire from Sweden. So this betrayal doesn’t exactly feel personal.
3) Nobody aspires to be a mistress.
Presumably, black women allegedly feeling “slighted” by high profile black men’s penchant for white women arises from envy—the sense that those women are taking something we want. But who really wants to be anyone’s “other woman,” billionaire or no? Tempting as Tiger’s “I will wear you out” texts may be, it’s safe to say most black woman aren’t likely to get jealous of a bunch of side chicks.
2) Tiger Woods is kind of a dork.
He may be a world-class athlete, but somehow playing golf lacks the raw sex appeal of something like soccer or basketball. For many women, Black and otherwise, the fact that Tiger Woods has sex at all—let alone in a wildly promiscuous manner—comes as a shock. It’s hard to get too upset about losing a man we never thought of “like that” in the first place.
1) This whole situation is entirely too funny to get angry about. (Unless you’re Elin and the kids. Or Woods.)
New mistresses popping up every day, panicked voicemails and sexy texts leaked to the press, and an endless supply of golf/sex puns and jokes. What is there to do but laugh? Sorry Tiger.

Marcus Garvey said, “A people without knowledge of their history and culture is like a tree without roots.” The works of the great German psychologist Sigmund Freud may offer deeper insight into aberrant forms of human behavior that defy rational and behavioral psychological explanation. When people experience unbridled racism during childhood, despite all of our conscious efforts to negate such experiences, they often affect the choices we make as adults. The tragedy of colonialism and neo-colonialism not only pertains to the transfer of our natural resources to Europe and the United States, but more importantly, to our patterns of consumption, thought and choices that continue to perpetuate the culture of the dominant colonial power. Not only are these patterns determined from early childhood, but they affect the mindset that conditions our choice of sexual partners. As with most Africans, Tiger Woods is a victim of a mindset that is programmed by colonialism and neo-colonialism. His U.S. childhood unfolded within a polarized racial world of Black versus White, rich against poor, slave against master, hunted versus hunter. In the same way European colonialism in Africa polarized the African child’s world into Black laborer and native against European master-leisure class; and Black devil versus White angel; under America’s domestic colonialism, to develop a Black identity is to struggle against racism and be hunted throughout one’s life by poverty, crime and unemployment. Tiger’s opportunity in life came through a denial of his African identity and the unconscious mortgaging of his childhood for its colorless antithesis. He embalmed himself with vapid values designed to suffocate and subjugate African liberty. As is the case with many African men, his pathological lust for White women can only be attributed to an inferiority complex tied to his pale skin color. This was induced at childhood by surroundings of unwarranted White privilege, which have continued will beyond the days of Jim Crow [see video below]. This same mono-mania has been retained within the unconscious minds of the African male, who views possession of a White female as a soothing ointment for being subjugated in his homeland by the omnipotent and omnipresent White master. Why else did the male dominated African press find the Tiger Woods saga so exhilarating, if not because they wished that they, too, were like Tiger Woods, envying his blondes and brunettes? Would it have mattered as much if these White damsels were instead Black women? At 16 years of age, Tiger attended prestigious Western High School in Anaheim, California. Its predominantly White student body placed him among the few privileged Blacks in their midst. Indeed, Tiger’s first girlfriend, sublime and gorgeous blond Dina, dated him for three years, later breaking up with him through a letter she proudly preserved. In Western High School, Tiger avoided the few Black women there, whom he saw as anathema to his dream of becoming an honorary White man. In his dating preparations, he perfected his accent away from the usual Black English of African Americans to dazzle his excited blond and brunette playmates – and with extraordinary success. Lightening his skin with cancer-causing chemicals and stretching his richly-coiled hair, which had once protected his skull from the damaging effects of solar radiation, made him more attractive but alienated him from himself. Yet it was his noticeable inclination to self alienation that attracted his White handlers and won him the chance to transform his potential to make him the first non-White winner of the Masters. If Tiger wasn’t seen as a role-model for Africans to be programmed and deployed for empire building, it’s unlikely that such an opportunity would have come for Tiger. Indeed, even he acknowledges that his marriage to blond and beautiful Elin Nordagren, daughter of a Swedish minister of immigration who was introduced to him during a golf outing, “was for publicity only.” The creation and depiction of Tiger Woods as a role model for Africans and their descendants, is a deception of Africa’s oppressed and exploited people. It says in effect that individual success under the capitalist system, which for hundreds of years has bred poverty, racism and misery, can be achieved. It promotes the deliberate lie that capitalism can offer equal opportunity to the African. The role of Tiger Woods compliments the projection of Barak Obama as another “successful” Black man, who has presumably defied racism and White supremacy to become president of the United States. Posted by WORLDMEETS.US These programmed, projected Black role models from the cesspool of capitalism serve as psychological weapons of deception and anchor millions of oppressed African peoples under the armpit of Western Imperialism. They are projected to delay the needed tide of African liberation and the realization of a united, sovereign, socialist Africa, with an integrated economy and a single currency beyond Western paranoia of Chinese encroachment. While the sound and fury of Tiger’s infidelity broadcast throughout the Western controlled global media was undoubtedly a well-orchestrated ploy to use a little sex to sell Tiger to the supposedly sex-raving African world, the fundamental message of Tiger as the quintessence of capitalist success and equal opportunity remained the same. He was the world’s first Masters’ winning non-White golfer, an elite sport for men of leisure, free enterprise, charity and wealth. He purchased a $39 million home on prestigious Jupiter Island to join his rich White neighbors such as Gary Player, Grey Norman, and Nick Price. He invested his capital in numerous multinational businesses in the remotest corners of the world, and many such companies, Gillette for example, used him in their radio and television commercials to sell their products, paying Tiger handsomely for his appearances. Yet Tiger wasn’t himself. He was only acting from a script written and stored in his unconscious mind, which was conditioned during childhood. This included his preferential lust for blonds and brunettes. His fall into infidelity as well as his choice of sex partners can only be accounted for by the cultural alienation that he had fallen victim to in childhood due to a racially polarized society. This inferiority complex, cultivated from childhood in a society where the devil is painted Black and angels are White. This was given an immediate reinforcement as they relished news of the fallen Tiger Woods, and admired his blond and brunette sex partners. Although Tiger now seeks psychiatric help and is being treated for compulsive sexual behavior, the ultimate solution is a cultural rebirth. He must, as Amilcar Cabral once proclaimed: “return to the source.” This isn’t a return to traditional norms and institutions, but an engagement with the people in their struggle, which has emerged from the past. Tiger, like many other people in Africa or the Diaspora, who have been infected with a self-consuming colonial mentality, must take their place in Africa’s forward march toward total liberation and homecoming. No one ever looks at the world with pristine eyes. A people without knowledge of their history and culture not only labor on behalf of the ruling and dominant power at the expense of their own perpetual bondage, but like Tiger Woods, are individually and collectively manipulated to make choices that negate even their own being and becoming. *Dr. Henry A.
