Overrated Samantha Stosur Upset By Kaia Kanepi In Straight Sets At Wimbledon!
Kaia Kanepi of Estonia shocked the French Open finalist Samantha Stosur of Australia 6-4 6-4 in the first round at Wimbledon. The muscular Stosur has improved dramatically in the past year rising to number six in the world on the WTA Tour. I am just not sure Stosur has the mental toughness to become a champion.
The world media have been hyping Stosur since she defeated tennis champions Justine Henin and Serena Williams back to back at the French Open earlier this month.
Stosur is a good clay court player and she’s decent on hard courts. However, Stosur has never advanced beyond the third round at Wimbledon her game is ineffective on grass. Stosur likes to run around her backhand to hit forehands but the slick grass courts are just too fast for Stosur.
However, Stosur cracked under the pressure in the French Open finals she lost to an inspired Francesca Schivaone in straight sets. Stosur just play under pressure against Schiavone despite having a 4-1 edge in their head to head series.
Today, Stosur loses to Kanepi and I am not impressed with this result. In order for Samantha to establish herself as a champion, she has to become more consistent in the grand slams. The champions are able to dig out of adversity and win difficult matches early in a grand slam event.
Kanepi is a very talented player she has a decent serve, and a lot of power. The upset is still a surprise. Maybe Samantha played too much tennis? Samantha reached the semifinals of Eastbourne last week.
Meanwhile, Serena Williams easily defeated the Portuguese teenager Michelle Larcher De Brito 6-0 6-4 in straight sets. De Brito needs to improve her serve if she wants to become a successful tennis player. Serena just destroyed De Brito’s first and second serves. Serena has the best serve in women’s tennis history she just overpowered the teenager.
