Samantha Stosur Does It Again, She Shocks Serena Williams At The French Open!!
Samantha Stosur of Australia defeats Serena Williams of the United States 6-2 6-7 8-6 in the French Open women’s quarterfinals. Stosur’s back to back upsets of four time French Open champion Justine Henin and the world number one Serena Williams means there will be a new female French Open champion. Stosur blasted Serena and kept her off balance surging to a 6-2 5-3 lead.
However, Stosur got extremely tight serving for the match in the second set and Serena fought back and won the second set 7-6. In the third set, Stosur broke Serena to lead 1-0 but Serena broke back.
The women continued to hold serve until the 5-4 game and Serena had a match point. However, Serena’s forehand sailed long and Stosur held to 5-5. Serena easily held serve for 6-5 and had Stosur down 0-30 in her next service game. Stosur kept on fighting and clawed back to 6-6. Serena finally missed some second serves and Stosur made her pay by breaking serve.
Finally,Stosur held her serve and her nerve winning 8-6. Serena Williams has not advanced past the quarterfinals of the French Open since 2003. The loss is a tough one for Serena she had her chances when Stosur was choking but did not capitalize on the break points. Samantha Stosur was just too good, she earned this victory.
I am so impressed with Samatha Stosur’s game, very few women can say they beat Justine Henin and Serena Williams back to back in a grand slam event.
Stosur’s opponent in the semifinals will be Jelena Jankovic of Serbia she easily defeated Yaroslava Shevdova of Kazakhstan 7-5 6-4.
