Jelena Jankovic Destroys Venus Williams 6-0 6-1 In The Italian Open Quarterfinals!

Is it time for Venus Williams to retire? Venus is turning thirty years old next month she is getting old. In Women’s Tennis, it is rare for a female tennis player to win a grand slam after the age of thirty.  Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova are the exceptions to this rule.

Of course, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova competed in a different era than Venus. Venus is getting slower, her second serve is a liability, and her  forehand breaks down.

I also feel that Venus has lost some of the mental toughness she used to have. Venus self destructed against Jankovic making a million errors.

I expect Venus to lose early once again at the French Open later this month.

Jelena Jankovic of Serbia destroyed Venus 6-0 -6-1 in the Italian Open quarterfinals. Venus loss to Jankovic is the worst loss of her career!

Venus has never beaten Jankovic on the clay courts. I am starting to wonder if Venus can still beat the “best” players?

Time is running out for Venus to win more grand slams. Venus cannot afford to play this sloppy kind of tennis and think she can still win grand slam events.

At the Miami Masters event, Kim Clijsters of Belgium, rolled over Venus 6-2 6-1. I think Venus is seriously delusional if she thinks she is at the top-level of women’s tennis. Venus has not won a grand slam singles title in two years.

No, it is not time for Venus to retire.

Up until her match against Jelena Jankovic, Venus was playing well in Rome. Venus just had an off-day yesterday. I expected her to make something happen, but she kept hitting error after error. I don’t think Venus should be worrying about this 6-0, 6-1 loss because she still has some time left to sharpen up for the French Open.

By the way, Venus has beaten Jankovic on clay before (Rome 2006).

Orville, you mentioned that Venus hasn’t won a grand slam in two years, which is true. However, after she won the US Open in 2001 she didn’t win another grand slam until 2005 (Wimbledon). Additionally, Venus was injured at Wimbledon 2009 and the US Open 2009.

It seems that Venus blasts everyone off the court and wins big whenever people say she’s finished.

Ashley, Venus is turning thirty next month. It is well known that very few women win grand slam singles titles after they turn thirty. Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert were able to do it. However, I think this is because Evert and Navratilova competed in a slower era. It will be very hard for Venus to win slams at the age of thirty. I am not saying it is not impossible. I am just saying I seriously doubt Venus will be on the WTA Tour in four years due to her age.
