Jelena Jankovic Defeats World Number One Serena Williams In The Italian Open Semifinals!
Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, prevailed over world number one Serena Williams today at the Italian Open winning 4-6 6-3 7-6. Jankovic fought off a match point when Serena served for the match at 5-4.
After the ninth game in the third set, Serena broke Jankovic serve again to move ahead 6-5. However, Jelena once again kept fighting and won the match. Jelena Jankovic is a very talented player she has excellent movement, power, and athleticism.
Jankovic enters an elite group she is only the eighth woman in WTA Tour history to beat both Williams Sisters consecutively in the same event. Jankovic is extremely fast she tracks down so many balls and she forces Serena and Venus into errors. Jankovic is one of the few players on the WTA Tour that has a positive record against the Williams Sisters.
The only problem I see in Jelena’s game is her serve. Jelena has the potential to win a grand slam and I believe she is a contender for the French Open. Jelena defeated both Williams Sisters this week at the Italian Open these huge wins should give her a lot of confidence.

Serena gave this match away. She should have won in straight sets, but she made a mess of things in set 2. Serena served for the match twice and even had a match point on her own serve. I don’t remember her ever losing a match having held a match point.
I’ll attribute Serena’s inability to close the match out to a lack of matches (Rome was her first tournament since the Australian Open). My main concern is that she remains injury-free.
I don’t care how well Jankovic played, Serena and Venus have themselves to blame for being defeated by her.
Yes Ashley Serena lost but I have to give credit to Jelena she played awesome tennis under pressure. Serena served for the match at 5-4 and yet Jelena hit an awesome two handed backhand down the line on match point. Jelena really took it to Serena in this match she fought hard and earned the victory.
