Gabourey Sidibe Is Not Black Beauty She Is Just An Obese Black Mammy.

The media are promoting Gabourey Sidibe because they are trying to rally behind her after Howard Stern’s  deleterious comments about her weight.

Now Gabourey Sidibe is in People’s Magazine’s 50 most beautiful people issue.

I admit, I am uncomfortable with Gabourey Sidibe being promoted as “beautiful” because to be honest I do not believe she is beautiful.

Now the fat activists can get angry at me if they want. However, I am thinking about the historical implications here.

In North America, the mainstream culture promotes the racist and sexist messages that the obese, asexual, mammy is a palatable image black women should aspire to. I strongly disagree with the black mammy image.

However, Oprah is a perfect example of the 21st century version of the black mammy. Oprah is not considered attractive, but she is “nurturing” and that’s an offensive negative stereotype of black womanhood.

Gabourey Sidibe made her big splash with “Precious” but I feel the media are going overboard with Sidibe. I am just wondering if there is something more subversive behind her rise in popularity with the mainstream?

Perhaps it is because Gabourey Sidibe is viewed as an underdog?  Maybe the reason people are rallying behind Gabourey Sidibe is because she is a woman who does encounter a lot of social barriers due to her race, gender, and also her weight?

Would People’s Magazine ever promote a 350 pound white woman and say she is beautiful? When has the mainstream media ever splashed an obese white female

on the cover of magazines besides the National Enquirer or the Globe?

Is it right for the mainstream media publications such as People’s Magazine to be promoting obesity? Obesity is a serious issue in the black community.   Hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and numerous other health problems can be traced to obesity. I believe obesity should not be ignored and submerged under the surface.

Gabourey Sidibe isn’t just “overweight”, the woman is obese.

Some people make the illogical assumption this is “progress” that Gabourey Sidibe is in People’s Magazine beauty issue. I disagree, it is not progress that an obese woman is being promoted as though her weight is “normal”.

Sidibe is living an extremely unhealthy lifestyle but that’s her choice.

I just resent the fact that a black mammy is being promoted as black beauty when so many talented and healthy black actresses are ignored.

It is still uncertain if Sidibe can really “make it” in Hollywood? I think one of the reasons Hollywood likes Sidibe is because she is the stereotypical black mammy.

Sidibe is non threatening she is so ugly, it makes me sick just looking at her!

Yes, some people will call me a hater, but I don’t care! I do not believe an obese woman should be promoted as “black beauty”.

Sidibe isn’t  even attractive, but she’s obese and  Hollywood is comfortable with obese black women because they are non threatening.
