Does Anyone Remember The 1995 Lesbian Film “When Night Is Falling”?

I remember I was in high school when Rachael Crawford’s lesbian film “When Night Is Falling” was released in 1995.  I was still in the closet, but I thought the movie was daring, sexy, and erotic.

It was so nice seeing two beautiful lesbians fall in love in a Canadian film.

My only complaint about “When Night Is Falling” is, that the movie ignores the issues of  class and race. The protagonist Camille she is a  white French Canadian lesbian professor of theology. Camille she feels conflicted about being a lesbian and a Christian woman.

Rachael Crawford’s character Petra, she is black lesbian. Petra is so brave and open about her lesbianism.

In fact, Petra she is a circus entertainer. The circus scenes are just  beautiful to watch.

Is it really plausible that Petra and Camille would fall in love since they are so different from each other?

Camille she is drawn to Petra yet she can’t understand why? Camille attempts to suppress her lesbian desires but the fire, the intense feelings, she has for Petra overwhelm her.

Since Camille is a Christian woman, she believes lesbianism is a sin. Petra doesn’t care about religion and Camille learns from her to live her  life on her own terms.

I remember I was shocked seeing two women make out because I didn’t really know a lot about lesbianism back in 1995.

The sex scenes are tastefully done and the passion between Camille and Petra is electric.

Rachael Crawford and Pascale Bussieres acting in “When Night Is Falling” was excellent. Canadian director Patricia Rozema’s film was such a beautiful work of art.

I am surprised that “When Night Is Falling” did not win a lot of awards?

This movie really opened my eyes to lesbianism and the struggles lesbian women experience in Canada. The sexism the character Camille experiences at the university is abhorrent.

Camille’s heterosexual male partner believes he can “cure”  her by engaging in  heterosexual sex.  Although the ending of  “When Night Is Falling” is predictable, the movie still is one of my favourites!

I recall a few years ago I saw Rachael on the American television show CSI Miami in one episode. I wonder what happened to Rachael Crawford?
