The Gay Men’s Dinner Party At Zelda’s Was Nice But The Drag Queens Misogynist Jokes Was Annoying.

Last night,  I decided to attend a gay men’s singles group in Toronto at the gay bar Zelda’s . I thought to myself, “why don’t I just check this event out. ” My last class for the semester was on Monday so I really didn’t have an excuse to not attend. Since I am single, I like the idea that the dinner party was outside of Church Street gay scene. I know this will sound corny, but I actually went to the event last night to test my social phobia.

I have procrastinated for months about attending the gay men’s singles events  because I am self-conscious. Sometimes, I am nervous when I meet strangers.

Finally, yesterday I just told myself “I got to do this for me. I’ve got to get out there and meet new people.”

The group meeting started at 7:00pm and  I thought all the gay men I met last night were extremely nice and friendly. I  ordered chicken fingers, fries, and a Smirnoff Ice to drink for my dinner.

The dinner conversations were diverse and excellent. One young man, he mentioned that he is married to a woman and he just came out of the closet in January. Another man, he discussed the fact that he just moved to the Toronto area from Ottawa and he wanted to make new friends.

I discussed the fact that I would like to meet gay men outside of the sexual arena of the gay scene on Church and Wellesley. I think everyone attended the dinner last night because we all want to get out of our comfort zones. I am proud of myself that I attended the dinner party and I stayed until 9:30pm.

However, I did not like the drag show at Zelda’s last night.

Maybe, it is because I am  Women’s Studies major that I was  cognizant of the drag queens misogyny that I was annoyed?

One drag queen, he made crude and disparaging comments about the female anatomy.

Another drag queen he had the audacity to touch a woman’s “breast” in front of the crowd at Zeldas!

I was disgusted because I thought it was rude the drag queen was violating the woman’s personal space!

Now, I got to say the two ladies attacked by the drag queens seemed to be doing a good job not getting upset.  I just felt the drag queens jokes were deleterious and abhorrent. I left the party at 9:30pm I just don’t like “drag humour”. Maybe I am getting old?  I thought the jokes  were just  just mean-spirited and not very funny.

I enjoyed the dinner conversations, getting to meet some gay men, and stepping out of my comfort zone.  I just did not enjoy the misogynist “drag humour”.
