Venus Williams Struggles To Win The Mexican Open, She Collects Her 43rd WTA Tour Title.
Last night, Venus Williams won the Mexican Open defeating the number sixtieth ranked Polona Hercog of Slovenia 2-6 6-2 -6-3.
However, clay is Venus worst surface, and she struggled she was pushed to three sets this week against low ranked opponents. Venus is too talented to have to fight show so hard against these lightweights. Maybe Venus is getting old? Venus turns thirty in June and maybe her time is running out to win an eighth grand slam title?
For instance, Venus almost lost her quarterfinal match to Laura Pois Tio, she is the number 399 ranked player in the world. Venus was down 1-5 in the final set before pulling out a 7-5 victory in the third set.
The Mexican Open is a tier three event, but Venus earned her 43rd WTA Tour title.

I congratulate Venus for winning her second title in as many weeks and for being tied with Martina Hingis with 43 career singles titles. I hope that Venus will keep winning titles.
The matches weren’t televised, so I didn’t get to see them, but I don’t know what to make of the fact that Venus was pushed to three sets in her last three matches against lower ranked players I have never heard of.
I’ll let Venus off the hook because she managed to retain her title, clay is her worst surface and this was her first clay tournament since last year’s French Open.
I am glad Venus tied Martina Hingis with 43 WTA tour titles but I am not impressed. Venus has so much talent I just wish Venus could learn from Serena. Serena is finally living up to her potential. Serena has won 4 out of the last 6 grand slam events. Venus hasn’t won a slam in two years. Also, why can’t Venus win a slam outside of Wimbledon? Venus hasn’t won a slam outside of Wimbledon in almost a decade.
It’s very frustraing indeed that Venus hasn’t won a grand slam other than Wimbledon in almost a decade. She has yet to win The Australian Open and the French Open. I attribute her lack of success at other grand slams to health/fitness issues and misfortune. I really believe the time will come when Venus will win the Australian and/or the French Open. It may be this year, next year or five years from now.
Its crucial to remember there was once a time when people thought Venus’s tennis career would be over, but she made a spectacular comeback in Wimbledon 2005, which was her first grand slam triumph in four painstakingly long years. Also, Venus finally won the end of year championships for the first time in 2008. Surprisingly this title had eluded her prior to 2008, but she finally made it happen in 2008.
We’ve just got to wait for Venus to make it happen at the grand slams other than Wimbledon. I know we’ve been waiting for a long time, but we need to continue to be patient and hope she doesn’t get injured.
I hope you are right Ashley, I just notice Serena’s return to domination on the WTA Tour. Serena has won 4 out of the last 6 slams. Serena she is very hungry and passionate about the game she realizes she’s getting older and only has a few more years at the top. I worry about Venus because she just capitulates almost every single time against Serena. The 2008 Wimbledon final was one of the few times in a high profile match that Venus she was very aggressive against Serena and she won. I was so happy when Venus won the 2008 Wimbledon final I was very impressed that Venus attacked the net she forced Serena into submission. I hope Venus can win one more slam before her career is over. The Belgians have returned and they seem eager to win slams.I hope Venus can win one more slam before she retires she is very talented. I just want Venus to maximize her potential.
