Elena Dementieva is a great player, but I feel she should be a grand slam champion by now.

I was surprised when I saw Jana Novotna’s name, so I looked at her bio on wikipedia and realised why you included her on your list: she won only one gran slam singles title. For a long time, I thought she had won multiple grand slam singles titles.

Kim Clijsters is one of my favourites. It’s great that she is a two-time grand slam champion, but she ought to be a four- or five-time champion by now. I expect Kim to win more grand slam titles, though I was surprised by her 6-0, 6-1 loss in Melbourne to Nadia Petrova (who I think should also be on this list; maybe you had her in mind when you wrote Dinara Safina’s name twice).

Jelena Jankovic is one of the most consistent players (as emphasized by her no. 1 ranking in 2008) and has beaten pretty much everyone, but she has yet to win a grand slam. I wonder if she is too passive at times. Her serve could be improved.

I applaud Svetlana Kuznetsova (another one of my favourites) for winning the French Open last year. I thought this win would have lifted her but it seems as if she is back to square one. She has all the talent a tennis player could wish for, but she seems to have a mental struggle on the tennis court.

All in all, I agree with this list. Tennis is a physical battle, but also a mental battle. I think this is where these players fall/fell short at times.

Other players that come to mind: Anastasia Myskina, Nadia Petrova, Patty Schnyder, Vera Zvonareva.

I feel Gabriela Sabatini is the biggest underachiever in the past twenty years. Sabatini had the talent but just like Dementieva she was mentally weak. Sabatini and Dementieva their serves are pure garbage. Dementieva hasn’t won a slam yet because when she gets nervous her serve capitulates.

Sabatini was so talent yet she did not have the drive or determination to work on her game. After Sabatini won the US OPEN in 1990 she was dominating Graf and challenging Seles. Everything changed when Sabatini choked in the 1991 Wimbledon final.
I agree I think Dementieva has not lived up to her potential. Dementieva is similar to Sabatini she has a lot of talent but a weak serve. I got to give Dementieva credit she has worked very hard on improving her serve but it is still not a weapon.

Myskina’s her 2004 French Open victory was a fluke. Myskina won because she was in the right place at the right time in 2004.
