The 2010 Australian Open tennis championships means the biased and racist ESPN Television crew once again are attacking Venus and Serena Williams.

Book Review: Read Zora Neale Hurston`s Tell My Horse To Understand Haiti`s Rich History.

I recommend  Zora Neale Hurston’s wonderful anthropological work “Tell My Horse“ to the readers of my blog.

`Tell My Horse“ is available at any public library or if you want to purchase a copy at the bookstore.

“Tell My Horse“ is  a  wonderful work of non fiction the book is  different than Hurston`s novels.

Although Hurston is telling stories about Jamaican and Haitian culture the writing is vivid, lucid, and cogent.

I love this book!

Some critics of Hurston say her novels are inaccessible for readers because she utilizes the African-American southern dialect for

the characters in her novels.

In `Tell My Horse`,` the reader will learn Hurston was also a brilliant social scientist.

The terrible tragedy of Haiti is not just about the earthquake, it is the fact some people do not know about Haiti`s rich history.

Zora Neale Hurston was a feminist writer and a trained anthropologist. In fact, Hurston studied with the famous father of American anthropology Franz Boas. Hurston received a B.A. degree from Barnard College  in anthropology in the year 1927.

In `Tell My Horse`, Ms. Zora Neale Hurston provides a fantastic historical account about sex gender relationships, religion, history, and politics, in Haiti and Jamaica.

For instance, Zora provides readers with a better understanding of voodoo in Haiti and “duppies“ in Jamaica. In Jamaican patois,  “duppies“ are ghosts.

Some people may complain and say Zora`s work was not a true ethnography. However, Hurston presents a vivid, clear, understanding of the Jamaican and Haitian people in the early 20th century.

Justine Henin Dumps Elena Dementieva In Straight Sets & Advances To Third Round Of Australian Open.

Last week, Elena Dementieva defeated Serena Williams  in the finals of the Sydney International. However, today at the Australian Open, Justine Henin defeated Dementieva 7-5 7-6 in straight sets. Henin just returned to playing competitive tennis after a year and a half break, yet she is able to beat Dementieva.

The so-called depth in women’s tennis is a joke. I am not surprised Henin won because she is a great champion and Dementieva is not a champion.

Dementieva once again capitulates in a high-profile match and loses. People can make excuses for Elena Dementieva but she was the favourite to win yet she lost. I don’ think Elena will win a grand slam singles title. I Elena does not possess the mental toughness and a good serve to win a major.

Andy Roddick Should Be Fined For His Unprofessional Conduct. Why Is There A Double Standard In Tennis?

Today, at the Australian Open, Andy Roddick’s behaviour on the court during his second round match was abhorrent. Roddick is such a jerk, his petulant behaviour towards the chair umpire and lines people is disgraceful! However, Roddick has never been fined for his unprofessional conduct on the court by the tennis authorities. Why is there silence to Andy’s obnoxious behaviour? EPSN television, International Tennis Federation, and the media are silent to his immature outbursts.

Once again, at the Australian Open Roddick acted like a spolied child when he swore at the chair umpire. Where is Andy Roddick’s fine? Will there be an article published about Roddick’s unprofessional conduct?  I guess Roddick gets a pass for his deleterious actions because he is a white American male.

Maria Sharapova Upset In The First Round Of The Australian Open.

Maria Kirilenko of Russia, defeated her good friend Maria Sharapova of Russia 7-6 3-6 6-4 in three hours and twenty-two minutes. The match was sloppy,  filled with  unforced errors.

Maria needs to decide, is she a tennis player or a supermodel?

Sharapova is the three-time grand slam singles champion she is more than just a pretty face.

Maria  has a lot of talent but she needs to add to her game. Maria’s volleys are weak and her movement is her weakness.

I am not suggesting Maria isn’t fit because she is. However, I am suggesting that Maria needs to find a way to become more agile on the court.

According to media reports, Sharapova’s $70 million dollar Nike contract is the most lucrative sports endorsement for a female athlete.

Maria played an exhibition before the Australian Open and that just wasn’t smart.Maria need real tennis matches to gain confidence.

Maria is just too good a player to lose to someone like the 58th ranked Kirilenko.

Sharapova had 11 double faults and seventy-two unforced errors. I don’t understand why Maria did not play a warm up event before the Australian Open?

Maria hasn’t competed on the WTA Tour since October 2009. Maria is now ranked number fourteen in the world she is better than that. Maria should be in the top five on the WTA Tour.

Maria is too talented to be wasting her abilities.

Where is Maria’s dedication? Where is Maria’s consistency?  Where is Maria’s serve? Maria’s serve is still a liability.

If Maria Sharapova wants to return to the top of women’s tennis she must become more disciplined and focused.

Sgt. John Faught Has Died In Afghanistan. Is This War A Waste Of Canada`s Time?

Yesterday, sergeant  John Faught died in Afghanistan after taking part in a foot patrol.  Faught`s  tragic death adds to the body count.  One hundred and thirty-nine Canadian soldiers have died in Afghanistan.

The media only report the superficial elements of this tragedy. The  news doesn`t provide in-depth analysis about the problems in Afghanistan.

There are no articles published about the devastation to the families of  the deceased Canadian soldiers. I am cognizant that  the media briefly speak to the bereaved families of the deceased soldiers.

However, why hasn’t the Canadian media followed up with the soldiers families months or years later?  There needs to be a stronger understanding of the sheer devastation and destruction that these senseless deaths cause the Canadian families.

Is Afghanistan really changing at all? Is Canada’s presence really helping the Afghan people?

Where are the articles about the depression, the grief, the despair, of these Canadian soldiers families?

The press just gloss over the deaths of our soldiers as  patriotic.  The quandary is, the problems in Afghanistan are complex.  The Canadian people  must challenge the Stephen Harper regime a bit more.  We are too complacent just watching more and more Canadian  soldiers dying in vain. What are our soldiers dying for?

I believe it is time for  the Canadian soldiers now!  So many Canadian  soldiers have died and so little has changed  for the Afghan people. The United Nations needs to do more to help Afghanistan and the rest of the western world. Canada has done enough it is time for Canada to leave.

Jay Sean`s Album All Or Nothing Has Sold 121,000 In America. Why Is Jay Sean’s Album Flopping In The UK?

British soul singer Jay Sean’ third album ,“All Or Nothing`,` has sold 121,000 copies in America. He is signed to Cash Money Records in the United States. Cash Money needs to promote Jay Sean more because the man has two top ten hits on billboard that`s incredible!

I think the sales are okay since Jay Sean`s album was released on  November 23rd 2009. I hope Jay Sean`s album sales pick up in the USA.

His real name is Kamaljeet Singh Jhooti and he abandoned a career in medicine to become a pop star.

Some people say Cash Money Records has changed Jay Sean’s appearance to look more American and less South Asian.

For instance, Jay Sean’s hair and musical style has changed.  One argument is, Jay Sean can’t incorporate South Asian music if he is trying to appeal to an American market. However, critics say Jay Sean’s first two albums reflected his South Asian heritage and he should continue fusing South Asian music with R&B.

Jay Sean’s hair is now a low fade.

It appears as though  Cash Money Records is trying to make Jay Sean appear more racially ambiguous to look more like an  African-American or Latino man?

Jay Sean`s success is incredible for multiple reasons. First, Jay Sean is the first British South Asian singer to have a number one hit on the billboard charts! Jay Sean`s single “Down“ is still in the billboard`s top ten! His second single, “Do You Remember” has sold 903,625 the single has been certified gold in America.

Second, Jay Sean`s success challenges a lot of racist and sexist stereotypes about South Asian male sexuality. Jay Sean is gorgeous, intelligent, and yes sexually attractive. In North American pop culture, South Asian men are finally being represented as  being sexual men  and not as asexual.

Third, I think Jay Sean`s success will help people to learn more about South Asian culture.

Jay Sean is very proud of his heritage of his Punjabi heritage and he discusses his heritage a lot in interviews. However, I think Jay Sean realizes he does not want his heritage to define his  identity.

Kalpen Suresh Modi`s  success in the Harold & Kumar film series has helped to  change the perceptions Americans have  about South Asian men sexuality.

However, at least Jay Sean has sold over 121,000 in America because I am shocked his album is not selling at all in England!

Wow I am very surprised!

Jay Sean has a strong following in the UK he is a huge star in England. Why aren’t the British people supporting him?

His first two albums were very successful in the UK reaching gold and platinum status. Jay Sean’s first album 2004’s  “Me Against Myself” was certified gold in the UK sold 100,000. Jay Sean continued his success in India he sold  over 2 million of his debut CD.

His second album “My Own Way” was very successful in the UK selling over 300,000 copies.

I thought the British people would be proud of him?

Is there a Jay Sean backlash going on in England?

His  first single “Down” has been ceritfied multi platinum  in the United States selling over 3 million copies. Down did manage to reach number three on the UK singles chart his biggest hit in the UK.

I have to admit, Jay Sean`s album cover should be a bit more sexy.

Anyway, `Down“ also reached number one in the United States so I am not suggesting Jay Sean isn`t doing well because he is. Jay Sean is the first British urban singer to have a number one single in America.

For example, Robbie Williams is very popular in the UK & Europe but he has never achieved Jay Sean`s success in America. Jay Sean`s second single “Do You Remember“ also reached the top ten on the billboard charts at number ten.

PS. Buy Jay Sean`s album  it is available in record stores!

Who Do You Support Conan O’ Brien, Jay Leno, or NBC?

The incendiary news this week, is the behind the scenes controversy between comedians Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, and NBC.

Everyone knows, NBC wants Jay Leno to return to his old Tonight Show  time slot at 11:30pm.

However, Conan O’Brien is furious because NBC wants to move his

show to 12:35 am.

Leno is a multi millionaire, he should be a gentleman and  just quit. After all, Jay Leno took the gamble to host a variety show at 10:30pm and the ratings were dismal.  Leno’s demographic audience are older people, the baby boomer generation and  O’Brien’s audience are younger people the under 40 crowd.

According to media reports,  O’Brien’s lawyers did not negoitate a contact with a  fixed time slot for his show.

Since O’Brien’s show doesn’t have a fixed time slot in his contract,  NBC technically NBC can move O’Brien’s show anywhere they want. I believe NBC actions are very disrespectful to Conan O’Brien. The comedian Jerry Seinfield slammed O’Brien he basically said it doesn’t matter where NBC places O’Brien’s show it’s up to O’Brien to attract television viewers.

However, O’Brien is upset he believes NBC did not give his show sufficient time to build an audience. What do you think? Is NBC to blame for this fiasco or is Jay Leno to blame? Also, do you believe Conan O’Brien is right or should he been reticent about his true feelings about this controversy?

Elena Dementieva Destroys Serena Williams In The Sydney International Final.

Elena Dementieva of Russia crushed Serena Williams of the United States 6-3 6-2 in the Sydney International event in Australia today.  Dementieva has won fifteen WTA Tour titles  but she is still not a champion. Dementieva is still mentally fragile and her serve is her weakness. She has modifed her serve but it still crumbles under pressure.

It is sad that Dementieva has not found the mental strength to win a grand slam she is a solid top ten player. Elena has proven she can beat anyone including Serena Williams when she is playing her best tennis.

Dementieva is a strong woman she is five feet eleven, incredibly fit, moves well, has excellent groundstrokes.   The question is does Dementieva have the mental toughness to beat the top women at a grand slam when it matters the most?

Dementieva has made a habit of beating Serena before a grand slam only to capitulate during the semifinals of a grand slam event. For example,  last year in the Wimbledon semifinals Dementieva had a match point but still lost to Serena Williams 6-7 7-5 8-6.

In January 2009, at the Sydney International semifinals, Dementieva smashed Serena 6-3 6-1 but she  lost to Williams at the Australian Open. In August 2009, at the Canadian Open Dementieva defeated Serena easily 7-6 6-1 only to lose in the second round to American teenager Melanie Oudin.

Dementieva has failed to reach a grand slam final since the 2004 US Open. Only time will tell if  Dementieva  can handle the pressure and finally win a grand slam event?
