Movie Review: Crazy Heart Is Very Overrated.
Last night, I went to see the independent drama Crazy Heart at the Varsity theatre in downtown Toronto with my meetup.com movie group.
The only reason I decided to see the film is because I love Maggie Gyllenhaal she is a very talented actress.
I am a big huge fan of Maggie Gyllenhaal!
Maggie will win an Oscar one day she is the best actress of her generation.
However, I was yawning during the film and looking at my watch I was bored.
I hate watching the fifteen minute commericals before a films starts. The acting in Crazy Heart was solid, but the pace of the film is extremely slow. Jeff Bridges performance as the alcoholic over the hill country singer was excellent.
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s performance was good but she was the wrong casting choice. Why didn’t the casting department choose an older woman to be the female lead someone in her late forties or early fifties?
It is very hard to believe that Gyllenhaal’s character, the young journalist Jean Craddock, would fall in love with a wrinkled old man. I felt like I was watching a grandfather seducing his grandaughter. The sex scenes between Bridges and Gyllenhaal are creepy and gross.
Hollywood is so sexist, casting these old men like Jeff Bridges with attractive young women like Maggie Gyllenhaal. The best part of the movie was the last thirty minutes but then I felt the ending was forced and rushed.
I give Crazy Heart a six out of ten the movie could of been a lot better. I wasn’t impressed with Crazy Heart.

1. The movie was predictable.
2. Jeff did a good job.
3. Maggie was miscast. I don’t find her attractive–rather mannish. In real life, attractive women love men like this; especially near the end when he was bring in some money. Why did she take that check in the end?
4. I like Colin, but the press really overrated his role.
5. I like country music and independent films, but this missed the boat.
6. I really feel Maggie brought down the film, along with all the alcoholic cliches.
Jean took Big Bad Blake’s money because it was a peace offering. I thought this was Bad Blake’s way of apologizing to Jean for his bad behaviour.
I see NOTHING attractive about Maggie but yes, the scenes between her and Jeff are GROSS. What a doll and hackneyed film this is.
This film would have been a lot better if it was about Merl Haggard but then Jeff Bridges could not have sung them well enough. I am a big jeff bridges fan, but this plot was so dam depressing. Leaving Las Vegas was one of the first films that was depressing but somehow i found myself wanting to see the film again, an found myself enjoying the film a second time. I do not see myself wanting to sit through this plot again. I found the Maggie character was a downer and an unlikely couple. Why does every movie now days have to have a gross throw up scene? enough with the barfing.
The difference is that Merle Hagard always kicked as in concert in a big way and had killer songs, but was a drunk in his real life. Jeff did capture that sort of character. I will say the song writing was not bad but was a long way from the quality of Merle Haggard. For example Walk the Line was a great movie. Why? Because they they picked great songs but they were sung great by the actors. Jeff sang okay sort of like Lenard Cohn with that last song. mostly he sang poorly. I kind of like the very last song jeff sang in the movie. I think Jeff deserved top honors for the Dude in the big Lombouski. See it!!
What a bullshit ending he gives her a check and she takes it. What a crap ending. I think her character would have taken him back if he quit drinking.
