Is Zoe Saldana The New A list Black Actress Or Just The New Interracial Vixen?
Halle Berry hasn’t released a film since her 2007 interracial drama, “Things We Lost In A Fire” bombed. Some black people aren’t supporting Halle Berry anymore, and why should we?
Berry decided she wanted to crossover to white Hollywood while forgetting her core audience is black. Berry isn’t appealing to black audiences anymore even though she first obtained her success working in black cinema. Zoe Saldana also started out working in black films and she is now mainstream.
Halle Berry is a mother, and she is also 43 years old. Of course, 43 is not old in life terms. However, Hollywood has been searching for the new A list black actress that is young, thin, has long straight hair, attractive, lighter skin, and talented.
Zoe Saldana may reach the A list, she has all the ingredients that mainstream white Hollywood desires for an actress that wants to become a leading lady.
Zoe is basically a black woman with a white woman’s body. If you look at Zoe’s early films, such as 2002’s “Crossroads” or “Drumline” she actually had curves.
Unfortunately, Zoe’s body has changed, she has conformed to Eurocentric standards of beauty.
Zoe is now rail thin, she lost her curves, her ass is now non-existent, she used to have a buttocks. Now Zoe just looks malnourished and she looks almost anorexic.
Meanwhile, Halle Maria Berry used to be a black woman with grace, charm, and dignity. However, Berry transformed into the “interracial vixen” with controversial performances in Monster’s Ball & Swordfish by flashing her breasts, ass, and pubic hair.
Berry was reduced to being the “black Jezebel”, and an “interracial vixen” for white heterosexual male desire. Berry’s lost a lot of respect from some blacks for appearing in both films.
Angela Bassett she is a respectable, sophisticated, black woman, she has class, dignity, and self-respect.
In fact, Bassett turned down Monster Ball because she felt the character Leticia Musgrove was a prostitute.
Bassett’s analysis is correct, Leticia Musgrove was the black whore she sold her body in exchange for shelter and food.
The quandary is, why can’t several black actresses reach A list and maintain their dignity?
Does a black woman have to “strip” in order to reach the A list? Halle Berry has had some incredible performances in films such as “Queen”, “Losing Isaiah”, & “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge”.
However, Berry did not reach the A list until she “turned a trick” in Monster’s Ball!
Berry did not reach the “mainstream” until her black ass was bent over a couch getting drilled doggy style by a white man!
So is this the subliminal racist and sexist message Hollywood is sending to the public?
The blue print appears to be that a black actress has to have white male love interests in order to “make it”?
In other words, does a black woman have to “fuck” a white guy in the movies to reach the top of Hollywood?
The only other route a black woman has to reach the A list is to become the asexual overweight mammy. The mammy is non threatening she is just asexual.
Why is it always one or two at a time? Queen Latifah is also A list but she’s another stereotype of black womanhood. Queen Latifah is the overweight, asexual, black mammy.
It appears black Latina, Zoe Saldana is, the new A list black actress. The problem is, why is Zoe Saldana only “now” considered A list because she has received mainstream “recognition”?
Saldana has appeared in two box office blockbuster films this year Star Trek & Avatar. Saldana is 31 years old, so she’s young. I thought Kerry Washington was going to become A list black actress, but her career has cooled off. I only remember Kerry for her L’Oreal hair commercials and that’s it.
What is Kerry doing these days anyway? The last film I saw Kerry Washington in was the horrible interracial drama Lakeview Terrace which flopped! If Lakeview Terrace was supposed to help Kerry Washington crossover it backfired.
Rosario Dawson was supposed to be the new interracial vixen, she works mostly with white male actors but her career hasn’t taken off. Maybe, Zoe is lucky she was in the right place at the right time?
If you have been paying attention to Zoe’s career, in the last four years, she works exclusively with white heterosexual men. Of course, in terms of the Hollywood marketplace white heterosexual men want to maintain their dominance over all women. Black feminist bell hooks reminds us in her amazing book “Outlaw Culture” that pop culture are representations of society’s views about sexuality. In Hollywood, the message in these movies are black women only desire white men. Is this really true? The images from these films depict white men having a sexual aura or power over all women.
If you look at the USA 2006 census, black men are more than likely to be married to white women than black women married to white men. Have you ever noticed the black male and white female couples in society? Next time you look at interracial couples on the street you will notice when a black heterosexual man enters an interracial relationship it is usually with a white woman.
I always see black men with their white girlfriends and wives all the time. It is more rare to see a black woman with a white man. The reason some heterosexual black men marry or date white women isn’t just about love; it is about obtaining a higher social status. Some black heterosexual men believe if they marry or date a white woman they will be closer to whiteness which means closer to social acceptance.
In black Hollywood, it is common to see black heterosexual males marry or date white females. First, I just want to say if a black man wants to date or marry white women that is his right and his business. However, I am just questioning a few things. For instance, my argument is some black heterosexual men want more social privilege and they believe by dating or marrying white women they will have access to white privilege.
However, in the film industry the opposite is true. It is palatable for a black actress such as Sanaa Lathan, Zoe Saldana, or Halle Berry to have a white male love interest.
When was the last time you saw Will Smith or Jamie Foxx have an intense sex scene with an A list white actresses such as Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Hilary Swank, or Nicole Kidman? The answer is never. So why can’t A list black male actors have explicit interracial sex and romance with white actresses?
The most recent film that has an intense interracial sex scene is the film “Mother & Child” with Samuel L Jackson and Naomi Watts. My argument is, interracial sex between black men and white women is viewed as problematic due to America’s anxieties about black male sexuality. Hollywood doesn’t want to present the image that white women are sexually attracted to black men that would upset white male dominance.
White heterosexual men control Hollywood so a black actress has to work with white men in order to attract mainstream media attention. However, for an A list black male actor the opposite is true. Will Smith and Denzel Washington never have A list white actresses as their love interests.
Here is a brief look at some of Zoe’s most promiment films:
Pirates of the Caribbean (implied) – Johnny Depp
Haven – Orlando Bloom
Guess Who – Ashton Kutcher
Star Trek – Zachary Quinto
Avatar (sorta) – Sam Worthington
What do you think? Is Zoe Saldana the new A list black actress or just the new interracial vixen? The interracial vixen is a movie role where a black actress is hypersexualized and viewed as just a sex symbol for white heterosexual male desire. Halle Berry was the former black bombsell of Hollywood but she’s 43 snd her career has dried up. Saldana has replaced Berry but Saldana should be very careful she doesn’t want to be typecast.
It is very limiting to be the interracial vixen because there is a time limit on these kinds of roles due to age. Also, why hasn’t Zoe Saldana worked with A list black male actors such as Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, or Denzel Washington? I am yearning to see an A list black male actor and an A list black actress work together in a movie for the longest time.

“Berry decided she wanted to crossover to white Hollywood while forgetting her core audience is black.”
Ok, that’s not fair to her. It’s difficult for black actresses to get parts in the first place. And Halle Berry finds herself in a very unique position, because middle aged black women RARELY get parts that go beyond stereotypical roles. Now that she is an Oscar winner, it’s extremely hard to tell what producer is making quality films with dynamic black female characters (And please DON’T say Tyler Perry) If a black actresses in this day and age “depended” on solely black audience, they wouldn’t be successful. Period.
Zoe Saldana is beautiful, talented, not-so-young (in Hollywood years, she’s pushing it) and has been in black films before (Drumline, and the lesser known Constellation ).
The question is not black actresses choosing to abandon black audience, but rather why Hollywood has not created expanded roles for black female actors. Think of all the great black actresses we have Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Lynn Whitfield, Nia Long … the list goes on. Most of Hollywood is neither writing scripts nor investing in projects with them, or the black community in general in mind (Tyler Perry, don’t get me started on HIM). I’m waiting for the time when we can have a black female become a great crossover star, like their male equivalents Denzel Washington and Will Smith. When will a black actress command the salary and quality roles that Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, and Gwenyth Paltrow have?
P.S. Kerry Washington has chosen some hit or miss roles. She’ll do The Last King of Scotland (hit), but also, the I Think I Love my Wife (miss) remake? WTH ?
Zoe is a good actress, not great. I don’t equate her to Halle in any respect …
lc Halle Berry blew her opportunity! Halle Berry was paid a very large salary after winning the Oscar for Monster Ball. In fact, according to IMDB.COM Halle was paid $14 million for the disaster Catwoman! Halle was also paid $10 million for piece of shit Perfect Stranger!
She has multi million dollar endorsements for Revlon and she has her own successful perfume line. Halle is making money!
Halle got paid $6 million for Gothika. Halle definitely was making the same amount of money as her white female A list counterparts. The problem for Halle Berry was, Hollywood forced her into a box. Since Berry is the only black woman to win the best actress Oscar she can’t take “supporting” roles in movies anymore. Berry doesn’t want to be second fiddle to another actress in a movie and that’s why she’s not working.
I think Berry has a lot of pride but the longer she doesn’t work the harder it will be for her to get back into the business.
I believe there is tremendous pressure on Halle Berry because she is the “first” black woman to win the best actress Oscar.
Where is Halle Berry now? NOWHERE. Halle hasn’t made a movie in three years! I think since Halle transformed into the interracial vixen this hurt her career. Although Halle Berry is not old the woman is only 43 BUT in Hollywood she won’t be cast as the “sexy woman” anymore. The casting directors KNOW Halle Berry’s age even though she still looks flawless and amazing! The problem for Halle is she should of diversified her roles a bit more. I hope it is not too late for Halle to make a comeback?
Can Zoe be a A list Black actress SURE! Because the A is for ASS As far as Hollywood aka = (the white narrow mined elitist sexually confused establishment) goes She’s just ass like halle (who’s getting up there now) and the rest of black barbie dolls. I’m sure she is an intelligent strong black woman off camera with tons of potential for great things in cinema. BUT! that’s NOT going to happen all were going see her do is what halle did in her BIG Budget movies. Alot of riske scenes half naked showing wiggling her sweet little brown sugar booty and batting those big beautiful brown eyes and beaming that wide gorgeous sparkling smile till she gets to old for those roles. And when that happens she’ll end up like Halle fewer big budget roles…..It’s like that to a much lesser degree with pretty white actresses once you get up there 40’s you career is on the downslide. They (Hollywood) just can’t see beyond the skin…Even if it’s black and beautiful.
Hollywood aka = (the white narrow mined elitist sexually confused establishment) does NOT like seeing black people fucking WHY? Fear of the Black Dick and the Black Ass. Brothers start alot fucking on film it will take away from there white fantasy of the white man being greatest lover. Samething for the women they start showing round bare black booty bouncing as she’s walking across the bedroom. Are you still going to get hot watching that flat white pancake ass straggling across the hall with NO rhythm lol? I don’t think so
oooooooooo you are the man jettt. you hit it right on the truth and so funny but true.
Just Imagine Denzel, Will Smith, Wesley Snipes or Jamie Foxx in one of there movies when there in top shape. in the buff and BUFFED UP!The head board hitting the wall making that loud booming sound as you see a chiseled back tapering down to a beautifully sculpted round BLACK ass. Bobbing up and down with white a (or black) woman’s hands grabbing those sweet cheeks. That accompanied with her moans squeals and the ever present squeaking of the bed. Brad WHO? George WHAT’S HIS NAME? and Matt DAM I FORGOT! Those white boys would not look as sexy beside those fine fit brothers on a level fucking field. and i lovvvvve brad who?lol. And that’s will never see them or any other major black movie star fuck like THAT!…..on screen.
WOW jettt you are preaching tonight! I think Hollywood has always had a fear of black male sexuality. We all know in society that we see more interracial relationships between black men and white women. I think Hollywood is fearful of black masculinity and wants to maintain white male dominance over all women. In the films we are presented this distorted image that all black women desire white men sexually and that’s such a lie!
The white heterosexual man is also presented as the ideal man for all women regardless of their race.
I fear Zoe Saldana is falling into the typecasting trap of the interracial vixen she may end up just like Halle Berry. Hollywood is so sexist when a woman reaches her 40s she’s viewed as old and a 40s something man regardless of race is mature. Meryl Streep is the exception to the rule she’s in her 60s but she is a white woman she’s not black. Black women have always had less leverage in a white supremacist society to have more range in roles compared to white actresses.
lc I’m going to agree and disagree with you about Halle Berrry. Berry definitely has more choices than most black actresses. I think Berry made some bad choices Catwoman WTF! Perfect Stranger WTF! Berry does encounter racism and sexism of course because she’s a mixed race black woman.
lc I don’t think a black actress can ever really become a true crossover star due to the issue of racism and gender discrimination. Look at Berry she “tried” to crossover with interracial films but she alienated black audiences and white audiences. Do not forget not all white people are thrilled about Halle Berry having white male love interests either. It isn’t just black people that may have a problem with this.
I believe the reason black men have been a bit more successful is because yes Hollywood is sexist it is male dominated industry. Also, since America has anxieties about interracial sex between black men and white women the black male actors tend to have black or women of colour love interests.
The quandary for a black actress is it’s tough for a black woman in Halle Berry’s level to work with an A list black male actor. I think because if two black A list people work together a move is branded a “black movie.”
I agree that Zoe Saldana is not a great actresss yet I am not impressed with her acting that’s just my personal opinion.
I posted my last message at 19:48 and you replied at 19:50 WOW! I love man with nibble fingers lol. NOW! Anything is possible that’s why I love the Matrix Trilogy (Which Will Smith A BLACK MAN was offered to play the lead role of NEO opposite Larry Fisburne (he’ll always be larry to me) ANOTHER BLACK MAN Which could have been a turning point LIKE OBAMA BECOMING PRESIDENT or the Moon landing for black actors but opted to star in the critically acclaimed WILD WILD WEST????< Yes Iam being sarcastic NEO ended up being played by kenau reeves (cute can't act) who made enough money from those movies to buy a small country or ME..For the weekend lol.) it was about change. New blood. Black people, people of colour and open minded white at the TOP of the food chain is the only way will ever see true equality Now I have to go and watch the wild wild west…..it's on (CHCH T.V) Right now lol.
Hey Jettt you are so funny! You are right I mean Jamie Foxx, Will Smith & Denzel Washington are just very sexy! I think George Clooney, Brad Pitt, or Matt Damon are unattractive. However, I also notice in Foxx, Smith, and Washington’s movies they are rarely depicted as sexual. It seems to me Hollywood emasculates black men and treats black male sexuality as though it is inferior to white male sexuality which is racist. At 7:50pm I just logged on and I noticed your message so I responded. I am glad you like the topic!
everyone on here is so dumb…..cuz guess what? zoey isnt black at all…she is puerto rican and dominican so she is full spanish. check her profile on imdb if you think im kidding…next time lets check the facts before we run our mouths.
” she is puerto rican and dominican”LOLLLLLLLLLLLL!…. Go back underneath the sheets and whack off these hot pics of her like the rest of us…..SHE’S BLACK LOL!
black is a race not ethnicity dummy same ship different drop off
Sorry, but I fully agree with Sam. Her skin may be darker than a “normal” latina but she is STILL latina. Casting her as an “African”, which is what Uhura’a decent is, was pathetic. Her “softer” looks appeals more to the typical culture of America and she is making her money from it. I am very happy for her success, but why not Meagan Good for a role for what is to be portrayed by a true “African American”?
So what’s next, they find a darker skinned southwest Asian who is remotely attractive and cast her in an African American role as well while true, and beautiful, African American actresses go without work?
Yes, Ms Saldana IS black of skin, but NOT of culture. Guess Who, Star Trek, Drum Line (although her race was never really specified there)… seriously there are too many normal “Black” actresses out there that can use the work as well.
Rahlo, I think you are confused. Latin is not a race it is a culture that is all. A person can be white and Latin or black and Latin or Mestizo and Latin. A person can also be African and Latin.
You seem to have this belief that black people ONLY speak the English language in the Western Hemisphere and that`s false. In the Caribbean and Latin American millions of blacks first language are Spanish or Portuguese. The African Diaspora is very diverse not all blacks in the Western Hemisphere are English speaking black folks.
Let me explain, Zoe is indeed a black woman she is a Black Latina. I am not disputing that Zoe`s “culture“ is Latin but her race is black. Zoe was born in New Jersey in 1978 and her parents are from the Dominican Republic. Zoe`s parents are black people they are just Spanish speaking Black people.
During the transatlantic slave trade 90% of the slaves were shipped the Caribbean and South America. The remaining 10% were shipped to North America. The reason Zoe has a Spanish surname is because her ancestors slave masters were the Spanish! Rahlo there are millions of black people in this world that do not speak English. For example, did you know that Brazil has the largest black population in the western hemisphere?
In fact, Brazil`s black population is 60 million which is more than the United States. The language the blacks speak in Brazil is Portuguese.
LOL! Cast Meagan Good in Star Trek? I won’t even entertain that idea. I can see a more mature actress like Kerry Washington or Gina Torres. Than again, Gina Torres must not count as a “normal Black” because she’s Cuban LOL. Nia Long is Trinidadian. Does that make her less Black, or does that rule only apply to Spanish speaking countries?
Zoe Saldana is Black. Not Black in culture? So American is the only culture Blacks can have?
Hey, all of you Rhodes scholars, there is no such thing as race!!!! Race is a European concept that is Erroneous. Science has proved it.
Spanish people are from SPAIN. Spanish people are WHITE.
What is so hard to understand?
Um, Zoe said she’s black herself. Have several seats.
She is Spanish culture wise but Black racial wise. Hispanic is not a race, it is a culture.
Sam, there is no need to use abusive language to make your point. I think you are confusing race with culture. Zoe’s culture is Latin this is true but her race is black. Latin is not a race. I know in America the USA has this bizarre racial classification system but Latino is not a race just a culture.
Zoe is a black Latina. Yes Zoe is indeed black. 90% of the black slaves were shipped to the Caribbean and Latin America during the trans atlantic slave trade. Only 10% were sent to North America. The reason Zoe’s last name is Saldana is because her ancestors slave masters were Spanish. There are millions of black people in this world that speak Spanish and Portuguese. I have read articles with Zoe she says she’s a black woman.
Have you ever watched the 1990 NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince? Remember the character Carlton Banks? Alfonso Riberio is a black Latino. For example, Pedro Martinez the baseball player he is a black man and he speaks Spanish. There are numerous black Spanish speaking baseball players playing professional baseball in North America.
Sam the Domincan Republic has a history of racism against blacks like most Latin American countries. Blackness is devalued and viewed as inferior in Latin America. Of course, some black Dominicans don’t want to be called black when their country devalues their existence.
Hey Orville,Blackness is devalued and viewed as inferior in Latin America.” Like everywhere else on the planet. Your right orville they have WORPED low self-esteem in those countries. And he’s a text book example. Sam is probably black himself Wishing he was white like most of them down there YOU CAN’T WASH IT OFF SAM LOL! YOUR BLACK LIKE THE REST OF US LOL!….But are you beautiful? Maybe on the outside (and have my doubts) but it doesn’t sound like it on the inside.
It is interesting the paranoia out there of some “vast [insert demographic here] conspiracy”. Hollywood is a business and while we are still in somewhat of a free market economy, businesses will more often pursue maximum profitability rather than take a risk with something revolutionary for the sake of social progress. If you were trying to make money and 70-80% of your target audience was one specific demographic, which demographic will you go out of your way to cater to? Simple math and anyone saying otherwise is lying or has lousy business sense.
Essence magazine learned that the hard way when they had Reggie Bush on the cover of an issue about relationships. Why? Because black women did not want to read about a black man who was dating a white woman, Kim Kardashian. You can bet Essence will not make that same mistake of offending its target audience. Or at least try harder. Nobody’s perfect and no matter what you say or do and no matter how innocuous your intention, someone will choose to be offended and then you too will be part of that “vast conspiracy”.
You discuss “what is”, while the vast majority of other posters has discussed “what ought to be”. To the extent that your post diverges from the topic of reaching the ideal – namely fair portrayals of black sexuality, your comment is not on-point. Profit is nothing but an excuse to behave in racist ways. Hollywood has absolutely no evidence that producing more even-handed films, shows and advertising will hurt profit$.
Moreover, accepting such a ridiculous notion does nothing but perpetuate racism. Most whites don’t want to live next to blacks, should housing discrimination be legal again? Most whites don’t want their kids in school with blacks, should we segregate the schools again? What you acknowledge is exactly the problem. It’s always about whites and THEIR comfort! F*ck their comfort! Nobody else in this country is comfortable, so why should their comfort matter, especially that of white men?
White men controlling Hollywood do what they do because they want ALL women to desire THEM and not black men. All they think about is making money and getting as much poon as they can, and they want it all at their disposal. White men have feared black male sexuality since the beginning of slavery, which is why the first target of lynching victims’ bodies was the penis. White men would always want to chop off the penis…couldn’t wait to get to the penis…gotta get rid of that black penis…because they knew white women wanted black men’s bodies.
We are born naturally chiseled, with nice, strong, round asses, great legs, developed chests and guns for arms. And even when we aren’t, we are a Barry White, a Gerald Levert or a Suge Knight looking dude. White women even swooned when oversized Warren Sapp was on Dancing with the Stars, and when they saw the real “Michael Oher” after “The Blind Side”. Black men exude sex, and white men are really intimidated by our beauty, strength and confidence. How many white men can “mack” a woman down the way a black man can. How many white men walk like Denzel, deliver lines like Will Smith, feign sex on film like Wesley? Oh, after Spike Lee’s “Jungle Fever”, white men won’t allow a black man to do another scene like that anytime soon.
Without money, an average-looking white male can’t “upgrade” to a supermodel looking female; their only hope is to date a white woman whose beauty does not exceed theirs or get an Asian woman. Asian women are for white men with no game. Show me a white dude with an Asian woman and I’ll show you a white dude with absolutely no game, so swag…no nothing. Black men upgrade all of the time because of that suave sexuality. White men hate Seal…HATE HIM WITH A PASSION. And they hate the fact that a black man doesn’t even have to be the best looking man in the world and can still snatch a rich, beautiful white woman that they could never get without being rich or looking like John Stamos. That’s black male sexy at work, y’all.
The fact is, black men are actually the envy of white men, and for that reason, they will never let us shine. They can accept us as “funny”, “tough”, and sometimes even “clever” (ex: Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley character). That is why so many black men play cops in film and television.
But “beautiful” and/or “sexy”? White, Latina, Persian, and Asian women desiring black men even more than they already do? White men don’t need them kinda problems. If white men had their choice, black men would be born without penises, because they want all of the women…EVERY WOMAN OF EVERY TYPE…to themselves. White men typically don’t like fat women, so they don’t mind when a brotha takes one of those off their hands. But let her look like Scarlett Johansson, Heidi Klum, Megan Fox, or Katherine Heigl. White men lose it!
By the way, ZOE SALDANA IS A BLACK HISPANIC WOMAN, and the black Hispanic culture is a form of black culture. Not all black prople were brought to the colonies, just the ones whites ignorantly thought would be the “best” slaves, whatever that means. They kept them for themselves and sold the others in the Caribbean. Dominicans and Puerto Ricans are descendants of Africa! Quit with the nonsense.
OrvilleDouglas,
I’m so glad you wrote this article on how Black women are fetishized in cinema for White male desire and consumption. I, as a Black woman, am sick and tired of this pattern by Hollywood to exploit Black women while neutering Black men on screen.
The facts are that Black men and Black women are married and have families en masse and yet there’s not one movie that shows Black romance in a respectful manner.
I’d also like to see interracial People of Color couples on screen. There’s more to life than Whiteness and its unquestioned normalcy.
Black women deserves more respect than the predomininantly White-male Hollywood establishment gives them.
Also, in real life, White men pick Black women last for dates and life partners. OK Cupid and Yahoo! Personals confirmed what I see in real life. Society frowns on Black women/White man couples.
Because even with the high number of WhiteMale/AsianWoman marriages, it still remains that only 3% of White Men marry outside of their race.
97% WM marry White Women, and if you talk to
the ones who have “OTHER side dishes”, they
will often admit that they like their EXOTIC
girl better, but she can’t make a white baby.
This is the reason that Black Men have nothing holding them back from marrying out of their group–unlike the White Male, their
goal is not self preservation.
So it’s not that “White Men as a Group” aren’t
attracted to Black Women. That’s baloney. They’re just desired differently.
White Men can’t sustain White Power without
white children.
That’s my take on this issue.
La Reyna(Stephanie B.)
There are more movies depicting Black women/White men relationships than any other IRs in Hollywood. That includes the combined other women of color/white men and men of color/white women. Also, IRs between other peoples of color are almost nonexistant. Which begs the question, why so many depictions of Black women/White men onscreen as opposed to off-screen romances? In real life, white men choose Black women last as dates and mates, given the ongoing segregations and racism in America.
What are your thoughts?
La Reyna
La Renya, I agree that white heterosexual men are less likely to date black women. I am just a bit cautious of the ways the media frame the discussion. However, black heterosexual women some of them don’t want to date white men either. I just wish the issue of black female agency is explored a bit more. The fact is I don’t see black women chasing white men and I don’t like the message the media is sending.
Black women do have a choice and most black women prefer black men.
The discussion is constructed in a framework that white men are viewed as the most desired men and views black women as inferior.
I disagee with that point of view.
It is true in a racist society of course white heterosexual men are at the apex.
However, there are black women for a plethora of reasons that don’t want to date white men.
I agree that for white heterosexual men marrying a woman of colour diminishes his white dominance. For a black heterosexual man in seek of white privilege marrying a white woman is in a sense “marrying up” not “down”.
Again, I am still surprised that this issue has been simplified to nothing more than a racist conspiracy by Hollywood to oppress black people.
First of all, that completely ignores all economic factors, which are the primary factors of any business that has any interest in doing business.
Second, if that logic were true, then the racist conspiracy of Hollywood would surely never allow actors such as Denzel Washington and Will Smith to gain such mass appeal playing such strong characters – that would empower black men and that would be endanger their white ruled utopia. That is ridiculous of course. Washington and Smith are great actors but more importantly are very profitable because they have huge fan bases. If either one of them had a slump in their career, Hollywood would move on to the next up and coming star and leave them making direct to dvd movies along with Val Kilmer (and Mickey Rourke before his recent career resurgence).
I fully agree that there could be more interracial relationships portrayed and by different mixes of people. And I also think Hollywood would see it would not harm their profitability if they took that small “risk” and portrayed a strong black male character and a white female character. But to say Hollywood actions are motivated purely by some conspiratorial racist agenda is incorrect and extremely short-sighted.
We will never solve any problems if we cannot step back and put things in their true and broader context. A decade or two ago, many people complained there were no good strong roles for black actors and they were relegated to play token black friends. Now we have Will Smith who has played 3 characters (I can count) who were originally white characters. And white actors are playing his token white friends. Yet some people will probably say that Smith and Washington have forgotten black people and sold out to make white movies. That, too, is short sighted and not fair to them and the accomplishment of mass appeal they have attained. I am sure they would also disagree with anyone of that opinon.
Also, over a decade ago, you did not see many interracial relationships on screen period, much less between white men and black women. If I remember correctly, MI2 made a stir because of the onscreen romance between Tom Cruise and Thandie Newton. The simple answer to some people is that she also sold out her black audience to make a white movie. Is that fair? No. is that true? No.
Of course we still have ground to cover, but in the true context of Hollywood and cinematic history, progress is being made. How are we ever going to see on screen relationships between black men and white women, if we do not at any point in time see on screen relationships between white men and black women? How can we ask for Hollywood to force one particular social advancement and in the same breath decry the last advancement it did make?
Especially in this case. People complain that there are not many off screen relationships between white men and black women. Well, here is Hollywood forcing a new paradigm, depicting these very same interracial relationships. So, why the complaints then? Why the obvious gaping holes in logic? I hope I am wrong, but the feeling I get is that many black women do not want to see white men in relationships with black women. And they surely do not want to see black men in relationships with white women. They want to see black men in relationships with black women. Any advancement in interracial relationships depicted on screen threatens that cause and they therefore feel compelled to voice opposition. The outcry to Reggie Bush being on the cover Essence magazine whilst dating a white woman was already mentioned as an example of this.
What we learn from this is that just about everybody has some type of prejudice or bias to varying degrees. That is unfortunately an inherent characteristic of being human. We think of ourselves first, and then our kind (whether it be race, religion, body type, social status, etc.) and we all must overcome that. That is why we see some commenting here demanding benevolence from Hollywood while spewing hate in the next line. It is the duality of (hu)man. Society is not going to change over night and will especially not change if we place unnecessary blame, make unfounded accusations, and ignore all the intricacies of this complicated and heterogeneous world.
I never said Hollywood will change over night this doesn’t mean that Hollywood should not be challenged about the messages and images they are produciing. bell hooks reminds us in her wonderful book “Outlaw Culture” that we must be enlighten witnesses. hooks she says we must challenge the white supremacy we see on the silver screen and not just accept the emasculation of black men as just entertainment.
Will Smith and Denzel Washington are the only A list black male actors in Hollywood. There are no other A list black male actors that have their global appeal yet they are emasculated due to being black men.
When was the last time you saw Smith or Washington have an intense sex scene with an A list white actress? You don’t even question why this doesn’t occur?
After all, you just said Nw that Smith and Washington have proven are successful black actors. So if Smith and Washington can turn a profit why are they also emasculated compared to their white male counterparts?
Don’t you see the difference here?
Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney are not attractive and that’s just my personal opinion. However, since white men control Hollywood they are the gate keepers. White male Hollywood executives are more than likely to allow an A list actor to have an interracial relationship with a black actress than the other way around.
I do not disagree with you that there is more progress to be made. But to say that there is a calculated and conspiratorial agenda by white Hollywood executives while ignoring all other factors is plain paranoia. If a conspiracy as you existed, they would not allow Will Smith and Denzel Washington to have the careers they do — at all. You continue to ignore that error in your logic and also continue to ignore all economic factors.
There are movies made for primarily black audiences which consist of primarily black characters. Why? Because the target audience — the target market — is black. If someone is making a movie and is targeting the largest demographic in the United States — 80% of Americans are white — that movie will most likely not end up challenging any social issues with the choice of its casting. There is an economic fear factor you continue to ignore.
I agree with you that Hollywood could take a chance and try to be even a bit more progressive and challenging and would find profitability has not been hampered. I also agree that more progress needs to be made. It is the flawed and narrow-minded accusations I disagree with.
If people only see the world through the lens of one issue, there is no way they will ever gain true understanding of anything. Thus far, you do not seem willing to see the world in anything but the very narrow perspective of “regardless of all other facts, factors, and historical context, if a black man is not having an intense sex scene with a white woman, then Hollywood is conspiring to oppress black people with a racist agenda”.
You either cannot see or purposely ignore and dance around all other issues. If that is the case, you have already made your decision and there is no evidence that will change your mind. So, please answer me this:
1) Assuming there is more progress to be made (I have never denied that), do you feel that ANY progress has been made in Hollywood? Could interracial romances between white men and black women and the casting of Will Smith and Denzel Washington in strong, major, non-“black” roles be a part of that progress? If not a sign of any progress, what is it? (To retain any credibility, please do not say that is simply a part of the conspiracy — that white Hollywood is tricking black people and letting them stand up just so they can pull the rug out from under them.)
2) If no progress has been made, by what criteria do we measure progress and how would we attain this perfect harmonious Hollywood of which you speak? Keep in mind that not including baby steps in any social evolution is delusional. Keep in mind, that a movie will not be made — millions will not be invested — unless someone believes they can turn a profit.
3) That brings me to my last question. Do you understand the role economic factors play in our free market system, especially Hollywood? You say you do, but then immediately jump back to your main premise without addressing it. How do these factors coincide and impact this so-called racist conspiracy if it does exist?
4) Actually, I thought of one more question. You have mentioned that America is a racist society. What would America be like if it were suddenly exactly as you wanted it? How would it be different than it is now? For instance, would every employee, restaurant, television show, song, movie, professional athlete, etc. have to reflect demographic proportions of the populace — a quota system across the board?
hi mate, happy holiday and i enjoy my time here.
Here is something interesting to think about. First of all, “A-list” is a term that gets thrown around a lot. I did not realize until recently that there is an official list (http://www.ulmerscale.com/). I am going to make my own A-list that is not the official A-list. I will put Denzel Washington and Will Smith (who is number one in the official list) at the top because this post is about them, but the list is in no particular order. I have not ranked them or anything as I consider them all pretty much the same. I selected the people I figure have had fairly consistent box office appeal over the last few years and was not trying to get down to a top ten or anything. I am no expert by any means, don’t have a specific criteria, and may have even forgotten an obvious one. Also, i am only comparing male actors known for more serious roles. My list:
Will Smith
Denzel Washington
Brad Pitt
Tom Cruise
Russel Crowe
Leonardo DiCaprio
Robert Downey Jr.
Christian Bale
Tom Hanks
Nicolas Cage
George Clooney
Those who almost made the list include:
Daniel Craig
Don Cheadle
Jude Law
Jamie Foxx
Mark Wahlberg
While I am just doing this off the top of my head, I think this is a pretty good grouping of actors.
Now, some people might say that I am racist because only 18% of my top actors are black. Or if I am not racist, Hollywood is racist, or America is racist. Interestingly, most people who think along those lines also believe in some type of affirmative action and that all demographics should be proportionally represented in every school or work place, including Hollywood (and excluding professional sports — maybe the only place where people are allowed and even expected to compete against one another without instituting artificial advantages and handicaps). Well, it is a wonder we never hear how Hollywood seems to be doing a better job than affirmative action quotas because blacks make up less than 13% of the population of the United States.
Even if my list forgot some actors who should obviously be on the list, the proportions would most likely still be close to the population proportions. If Hollywood is at or above and beyond the paradigm of affirmative action, how can it be so racist? How is there no progress? I do not see the logic and would love to be enlightened. Granted, as we have already agreed, there is always room for improvement. And I hope things continue to improve, but baseless accusations are counter-productive — unnecessary time and effort that could be better spent solving real problems is wasted chasing phantom scape goats.
Nw, I agree in one sense of course progress has been made. Of course, progress has been made. However, we must challenge the “progress” and examine what else needs to be achieved. We cannot just placate and accept what Hollywood produces.
bell hooks reminds us in “Outlaw Culture” we must be enlightened witnesses to Hollywood’s production of social images and our consumptions of the images that are created through the Hollywood dream factory.
I am not pleased that there is a paucity of black movies compared to say ten or even twenty years ago.
However, can we bring the dicussion back to the focus of my main argument? Remember, I am focusing on black women and not black men. Of course, black male actors have been successful due to being male. Hollywood is a heterosexist, male dominated institution that is based on male privilege.
Even white women are discriminated against in Hollywood. Once a woman reaches the magical number of age 40 she’s discriminated against. Where is Meg Ryan? Meg Ryan is a talented actress she has been black listed by Hollywood. Where is Halle Berry? Berry although she has made some choices I don’t agree with she is a good actress.
Remember, I was focusing on black women in Hollywood. Queen Latifah and Halle Berry are the only A list black women in Hollywood that’s it. Don’t you see there is a problem there? Where are the movies geared towards a black female audience lately? How are black females supposed to feel when they don’t have social representations of positive images of black womanhood in the media and pop culture?
Although, I don’t always agree with Tyler Perry at least he focuses on black women and he creates entertainment with a black female lead focusing on issues that relate to black women.
I am not suggesting that there has not been progress over the past thirty years. However, Denzel, and Will Smith are both over the age of forty. Where is the next generation of black movie stars? I can’t think of any other than Zoe Saldana. I am not sure if Kerry Washington is a star either. I think Gabrielle Union and Sanaa Lathan are well known within the black community but they are not mainstream.
I know the media will say George Clooney is A list but I think he’s a hollywood creation his aunt was famous and then he became famous. I just don’t think Clooney is much of a good actor or box office draw. I feel Clooney is very overrated.
Nw, Don Cheadle is not A list he is a good actor but I think he’s ugly and not leading man material. I don’t like Jude Law he’s just a terrible actor. Jude Law is a terrible overrated actor that doesn’t deserve to be a star!
I remember Chris Rock made a joke about Jude Law and I agree with him.
Now that is just my personal opinion. I agree with Robert Downey Jr. on the list he is clearly A list and he is a very versatile and talented actor. I don’t think he is a star. What about Samuel L Jackson isn’t he A list? Why isn’t he on your list?
Why isn’t Samuel L. Jackson on my list? Clearly because I am racist 😉 No, he would be who I was referring to when I said I may have forgotten an obvious one. And to be clear, I did not select actors because of their ability to act or whether I personally prefer them. I chose them because I feel they have had the most box office success as leading role actors of late — marketability and profitability from my perspective although I could easily be wrong on both. Some actors with recent success may also see dips in their careers as quickly as peaks and might not make any list in another year. That is how the business goes.
I did not know that about George Clooney, but that does not surprise me. Many people in Hollywood are related to someone else in Hollywood. I believe Nicolas Cage is the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola. Sean Penn’s parents were in Hollywood. I have never thought Nicolas Cage was a great actor (would I change my mind if I saw, Leaving Las Vegas?), but for some reason I like the characters he plays. Maybe that is a sign of good acting. Sean Penn however, has proven himself to be an amazing actor. So, even though they did have connections that helped open the door, connections are not a guarantee. They would not have become as successful as they did without immense dedication and determination on their part. The family ties are definitely interesting though: Michael Douglas, Jake Gyllenhaal and sister, Drew Barrymore, Emilio and Charlie, Keifer Sutherland, and many more.
I understand and appreciate your point about females in Hollywood. Unfortunately, for actresses in Hollywood, this is not a reflection of sexist Hollywood executives. It is a reflection of ticket buyers speaking with their dollars. As a whole, we in America prefer to see beautiful people on the silver screen. Sadly, acting talent becomes less important and less marketable than looks. I admit I am guilty of being shallow too, but I do recognize it for what it is and think we as a society should become less vain, materialistic, and worldly. I am starting by trying to become a better person myself first.
We cannot expect Hollywood to change society because more often than not, it is merely a reflection of society. And that was my point about black actors in Hollywood (sorry if it seemed tangential — I have not yet mastered the art of economy of words): targeting and blaming Hollywood execs as racist has no logical basis when viewed in proper perspective and context. It is a waste of time and accomplishes nothing. It is a distraction from other far more urgent issues that are occurring. What do we tell people suffering rape and murder in other countries and especially in our own backyard? “Sorry we did not notice — we were trying to get Hollywood to make a movie with Will Smith having sex with Julia Roberts.”
I am very interested in the issues at large, however, and would love to hear your thoughts on the four questions I posed earlier. You have been a great host though and already spent considerable time speaking to me. I appreciate that and understand if you need to move on to other posts. If any of your readers are interested in continuing the dialogue and responding to my questions, I would love to hear from them as well. Thanks again!

I now believe that Zoe Saldana is doing what she gats to do to move up fast in Hollywood. I am yet to see a BLACK or SPANISH dude play her love interest. Go ahead gurl; I thought some black men were the only ones that use this tactics.
Her “interest” in Drum Line was a black actor by the name of Nick Cannon. But I DO see your point.
Wow bro, Denzel’s new movie The Book of Eli really looks intense!I bet it will be another instant classic like Man on Fire
The information presented is top notch. I’ve been doing some research on the topic and this post answered several questions.

Hi, thanks so much for these tips! My blogs usually do bring readers and responses. One thing I do is engage with the readers. Answer questions in responses and make clarifications where needed. I think they appreciate that I take the time to talk to them.
Zoe is just another self hating black woman Uncle Tom, SELLOUT like all new-age black woman who if are light with straight hair have their a$s kissed by white boys so their quick to feel their better than black men.. Seriously does Zoe the Sellout have a clause in her contract that only white men can touch her or something??? So for decades now black woman have been b!tching and moaning about black men dating white woman but it’s ok for all pretty black girls to sellout like Halle, Zoe, Serena, Paula Patton, Rihanna, Rosario Dawson etc.??? Screw that.. BLACK WOMEN = SELLOUT HYPOCRITES.. To stupid to know what a good man is, so they have to sellout to white men just to be a white mans sexual fantasy..
Black men have had romantic cinematic roles with Hispanic and Asian women but the rate of with white women realtionships are slowly growing. I can think of Will Smith and Charlize Theron in Hancock and Denzel and Milla Jojovich in He Got Game, Julia Stiles and Mekhi Phifer in O. Black men/white women couples are popping up on television. Black men will be crossing that barrier with regularity relatively soon.Women who primarily and genetically identify as black are rarely seen in mainstream white movies, period. If they do they are an asexual helpers or hyper sexual and immoral, there is also the smaller category of suffering black women.Practically all black women in mainstream film have to have some aggressiveness whether it is playful sassiness or full out crazy black women syndrome.
Well, lets put it this way. In Hancock Will Smith Dies if he gets too close to the white woman (Charlize Theron). Mekhi Phifer dies in the movie O. and Milla Jojovich is a prostitute and Denzel goes back to prison. Similar to Racquel Welch and Jim Brown…you can be with a white woman…but it will end in death. Sorry, but nothing has changed hun.
Hello Ethel, I understand your argument but there is no need for you to be hostile and call me names.
Halle Berry’s film “Frankie & Alice” has been in post production for over a year she still hasn’t found a studio to release the film. Berry hasn’t made a movie in three long years that’s a long time for a so called A list actress.
Queen Latifiah is a more acceptable image of a black woman to Hollywood because she is not considered being threatening or dangerous.
Halle Berry has definitely been replaced by Zoe Saldana. Saldana is over a decade younger than Berry and she also has received higher profile roles.
Berry isn’t old she’s only 43 but in Hollywood once an actress passes the age of 40 there are less roles. Add to the mix, the fact that Berry is a black woman things are only going to be tougher for her.
halle leaving her black audience??? i agree!!! but to say lakeview terrace bombed-not true! kerry washington is on her way to a list status . her new film my mother and child has been getting good reviews and she works opposite a listers. plus zoe love interest was laz alonso in avatar
Face it, they hate you. I did find it interesting that Essence magazine posted Reggie Bush and there was an uproar in regards to him being with the weak lay from the Ray J video. Google “Essence Reggie Bush” and you will get tons of angry bloggers, comments, news articles and so on. However, Google “Essence Zoe Saldana” and it’s all quiet on the western front. Personally, I feel we have had 3 stages of “exotic whore syndrome”. First Halle Berry, then Condeleeza Rice, then Zoe Saldana…who is next?
Zoe doesn’t identify as Black or Afro-Latina, only Latina. At least Halle never made any bones about being Black. She just came with it.
I think that we’ll be seeing Zoe “crossover” a lot sooner than you think. As soon as she gets a few more blockbusters under her belt, we won’t see her playing with ANYmore Black actors. And her roles will all be “multi-cultural”.
Latin is not a race, it is a culture. You can be Black and Latin, just like you can be Black and American,i.e. African-American and Afro-Latino/a.
Dominican is not a race, it is a nationality. Puerto Rican is not a race, it is a nationality. Just like American is not a race, it is a nationality.
I hate when Black people denounce their African roots and completely disassociate themselves from any and everything Black.
She was on Jimmy Kimmel talking up her Latin roots; never once said anything about her African heritage, not once.
She plays Black and claimes something else. YOu don’t want to claim me, I won’t claim you.
Yeah, I won’t be buying any more tickets to support this particular actress.
Obviously Teacherlady, you do make a cogent argument that some black people do denounce their blackness once they reach the top of Hollywood.
I hate it when people from the African Disapora try to “downplay” their blackness because they think they can get “more roles” by not identifying as black.
I think that Afro-Latinos do have a right to be proud of their Latin roots but they suddenly ignore the incredible “racism” in the Latin American culture.
However, I believe Afro-Latinos are silly when they try to deny their blackness. How the hell do Afro Latinos explain how their ancestors arrived in Latin America and the Caribbean?
Black people did not “magically” arrive in Latin America or the Caribbean they were forced to work on sugar plantations for the Spanish and the Portuguese.
If you watch Spanish and Portuguese television the racism is disgusting against African people!
I am no longer a fan of Rosario Dawson because she did this years ago. However, where is Rosario Dawson now? Does anyone remember Rosario Dawson? Rosario, she starred in black films but once she crossed over she was suddenly Latina despite her African heritage.
I agree, I think it is lame when Afro-Latinos try to distance themselves from blackness.
Anyone can visit the local library and read up about the African Disapora in the Caribbean and South America.
Most of the slaves during the middle passage were sent to South America and Caribbean not North America anyway.
Zoe is a black woman and I sincerely hope she does not deny her black heritage.
Zoe considers herself a black woman and has said so many times.
No true Zoe Saldana is not a black sellout, she has stated repeatedly that she is a black latina and this arguement is sooo funny because she looks nothing but like a black woman. She could play an African as there are Nigerians and Ehtiopians that look just like her. Its funny when people see a pretty black woman they try to make her anything else but black. People should really travel as there a many African latinos in Cuba, Belize, Puerto Rico, Columbia, and the Dominican Republic. Im happy as she is brown skinned and not even light skinned. She is putting brown and dark black women on the radar.
LOL @ Zoe Saldana having “lighter skin”. She is the average shade of brown. Who are these “lots of blacks” that have stopped supporting Halle Berry? I must have missed this survey. Just because Halle Berry hasn’t been in a film recently doesn’t mean she isn’t ABLE to find work, but CHOOSES not to. She has a personal life you know.
Lighter skin is unfortunately the black American sign of “beauty” so even a dark skinned pretty black woman is regulated to light skinned category, lol. I am a black dark skinned South American female(originally born) and you would not believe the weird comments I get, as if people do not think dark skinned South Americans exist. My family has American Indian and Portuguese ancestry. But to most I look like a regular African American. One Korean woman told me that she did not know people who looked like me existed in South America, she thought that only “hispanics” lived there. I am sooo glad Zoe Saldana is bringing black latinos to the spotlight. For so many years we have had to see a false image of latinos as being white/indians or triracial black white indians like Jenniffer Lopez types. Jlo is black too, by the American one drop rule.
American people foolishly separate Latino as being a race. The term is mainly used by super mixed people who dont know thier race because they are too mixed to choose. Zoe is obviously African in majority, her being from a latin country does not change that. her features arent even that soft, she has a wide nose and full lips. Iman the African supermodel has narrower features and softer hair than Zoe.
Her affection for white men is her choice. American black men (alot) are really not much too go after as many are in jail, uneducated and angry because thier fathers left them. There are some good ones few and far between.
You Halle Berry fans need to wake up. The reason Halle Berry barely works is because she is box office poison. Halle is purely incapable of opening a film strongly and carrying the film from start to finish. Every Halle Berry vehicle has bombed miserably. Her mainstream film career is a joke. If she doesn’t making more financially successful films, her acting career will be in trouble, that’s if it already isn’t in touble. She will find herself relegated to support roles,if she works on the big screen at all. She is known more for her looks than her acting ability, because she is a mediocre actress to begin with. Sadly, she had to degrade herself on film to get a token Oscar. She then had the audacity to say that she did women of color (namely Black women) a favor by accepting the role. Angela Bassette and Vanessa L. Williams both turned down the role, because they are classy, proud, self- respecting Black women who looked at the big picture and saw the long- term, negative effect that it would have on their images and the image of all Black women. Needy, approval hungry Halle Berry, however, jumped at the chance. And Lee Daniels, the Black “male” ( not man) who directed that dispicable movie,” Monster’s Ball” should have been slapped silly for directing it. Leave it to a Black “male” (not man) to degrade and disrespect Black women.
First of all id like to say you are completely wrong. I’m black and I think what you have written is highly embarassing. First of all Zoe is not black, she is latina who chooses to identify as black in fil roles. Second of all Denzel Washington did star with Julia Roberts in The Pelican Brief and he did refuse to kiss her out of respect for the black woman.
Your conspiracy mindset is absolutely warped and it appears you have internal emotional issues with racial acceptance.
Black men and white women interracial relationships are growing fast and culturally being accepted more than ever. What difference does it make if they are portrayed on television or not? Plus its better for black women to get roles like that in Hollywood because it elevates the status of the black woman, whom many see as an unlikely marriage partner. So good for the black woman! I wish the’re more black women who get this kind of publicity.
Actually Whoopi Goldberg and Hattie McDaniel are oscar winners,Halle is not the only sistah to win it. As for Zoe,white women have always been portrayed as better than our sistahs. Hollywood just enforces that shit. Our black male actors are love interest of white women on purpose. Hollywood does everything to keep our sistahs in the back of the room. I would love to see Zoe as the love interest of a black male actor. As for Halle,White male actors in hollywood think that they can have their way with her, literally. I remember her presenting a award to a white male actor who came up on stage, took Halle in his arms and literally put his tongue down her throat. Halle was grinning from ear to ear. Now you tell me what other black actress with any self respect would let a white man do that to her? Finally,i would paint Zoe Saladana’s toenails and blow them dry. She is so sexy.
You read these post and the politically correct side of you says its bitterness. Then you crunch the numbers (in a somewhat limited fashion) and realize that unfortunately these things are rooted in truth.
The problem is that there are “regular movies” then there are “Black Movies”. There are enough good black talent that we should have “Regular Movies” that just so happen to star leading black talent. However its like you have to pick a side it seems. Shemar Moore for instance, is probably ABOUT as talented as say Keanu Reeves, but you would NEVER see Shemar Moore get the leading role in the Matrix. Will Smith or an A list black actor would get that chance. This is why up and coming actresses like Saldana takes whatever Hollywood (lets face it….white men) want to see.
Hello RisingSun, I think it relates to marketing. Will Smith reached the top because he had good management and he has an easy going personality. But I think Will Smith had serious drive and determination to reach the top of Hollywood. The problem is where are the young black actors? Smith is 42 years old.
Hollywood and the mainstream white media make an effort to market young white movie stars such as Anne Hathaway. However, very few black actors under the age of 35 are receiving much media attention. Yes, Gabourey Sidibe got a lot of press for Precious but I wonder can she continue to the hot streak?
Also, I doubt Gabourey Sibide will become a star she is unattractive, obese, and I don’t think she is very marketable to black or white audiences.
The only young black actor that seems to be getting good press is Kerry Washington. But Washington is thirty three years old yet she has never headlined a Hollywood movie by herself. I think it does relate to race because Washington is just as a good an actress and more attractive than Anne Hathaway. But Anne Hathaway is white and Kerry Washington is a black woman.
There are some great respinses here. One thing POC’d have to do is start making movies in other countries and marketing them WHY? Because we have no overseas presence. Take a look at “Black” themed movies on Boxoficemojo. They are al domsetic grossing films. NO OVERSEAS money with very fee exception. Oer countries don’t know enough about black culture because they get it fed through the media over here. Tyler Perry’s films don’t sell overseas cause no one gets it over there. Hip Hop sells so hip hop artists movies sell with all the stereotypes along with it. I realized an important point when I saw the marketing of HITCH. They could not sell a black man with a white woman (Will Smith) because domestic audiences (read southern) would reject it; They couldn’t have a black woman because it would be a Black Film” even with Kevin James in it and they couldnt sell it overseas. So they got a LAtina as he love interest and voila it made 300 million. This will continue to happen people. You will get the occasional film with black actresses like the Colored Girls movie( but that has a built in theatrical link) but it will not get better. There are no scripts for a black Lara Croft, Wonder Woman or Female Bourne Identity icon. Unless you market differently the same thing will happen. It will be one or two films a year for them and if you are over 40 forget it
Hello Steve, I agree with you that America does have anxieties about interracial romance this is obvious. For some reason Americans fear seeing black men and white women together. If the world is so liberal what is really the fear?
However, I disagree about the Will Smith movie Hitch. Will Smith is the biggest black star in Hollywood he didn’t want to have a black female love interest because he is only concerned about profit. I think this is sad on Will Smith’s part. Will Smith has an incredible amount of power and if he wanted a black female love interest in his movies it could of happened. But Will cares about making money and not helping black women.
I disagree about that black films can’t make money overseas. I think the real problem is the film industry doesn’t put in the money and effort to market black movies overseas. Hollywood has such disregard for black actors that they make the excuse black movies can’t turn a profit because they don’t try.
African American culture is well known overseas the hip hop music, the African American history is not unknown in foreign territories.
For example, I checked boxofficemojo and some black movies are released in the foreign western nations such as Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and Ireland since these are English speaking nations.
However, Hollywood will not market black movies in countries like South Korea or Japan even though black celebrities have fans in these Asian nations.
Since Will Smith and Denzel Washington are black and their movies are shown overseas I think their success proves people in international markets will watch their films.
In relation to your other point, I agree that in America the screenwriters don’t care for black women. Black women hardly ever get action or science fiction film roles. I wonder why? Maybe it is about sexism? Why can’t there be a black female detective movie?
Your entire article shows that you see everything through a black racist lens. Maybe Zoe Saldana just reads the scripts she is offered and chooses which ones she thinks are good. Guess what, moron? Most actors and actresses HAVE NO IDEA WHO THEIR COSTARS WILL BE UNTIL AFTER THEY’RE ALREADY CONTRACTED TO PLAY THEIR PARTS.
The fact that you mention Bell Hooks in your article tells me that you’re just going to go off on a racist rant about how sad it is for black people and how everything bad that happens to them is someone else’s fault. Maybe you need to listen to Bill Cosby and learn about lifting yourself up instead of trying to drag others down with you.
Personally it’s not that I’m not supporting Black actresses, but it’s a rock and a hard place for some Black consumers. If I don’t buy a movie ticket and all, I’m not supporting a Black actress. If I do, I’m supporting Hollywhite’s assumption that limited roles are enough for Black actresses because they can make money off of it.
By the way…Zoe does appear to prefer white men, both as her romantic interests on film and off screen. I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Thandie Newton, whom Zoe reminds me of, although Thandie is a much better actress. I also think she looks a lot like Jada Pinkett-Smith in her photos. .
All this “rocket science”! Zoe and Halle are actors who happen to Black/bi-racial/women. The key word here is ACTOR. Acting is what they do for a living; acting is their source of income; it’s how they pay the bills. They are doing what actors do. Whats the big deal when black women are the love interests of white men, whether in real life or in movies? Black men have been showcasing their white wives and girlfriends for ever..especially actors and atheletes. Grow up and get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zoe Saldana is NOT biracial, she black just like all other blacks in the Western Hemisphere.
Actually, Zoe Saldana is Latina – she doesn’t identify as African American. So it isn’t really correct to speak of her as a “Black actress”. Perhaps it might be appropriate to talk about her as a Latina actor and how racial stereotypes affect the roles she gets, or to compare her career to other Latina actors like Rosario Dawson or Salma Hayek.
I like your comment.
Zoe is a Black Latina (and identifies herself as such). Why would she identify as an African American? Naomi Campbell doesn’t identify as an African American, she is British. Does that mean we shouldn’t speak of her as a “Black model”?
I identify as a Black American. I despise the term ” African American”, a label that was foisted upon all Black people who were born in the U.S., and the Black elitests who are responsible for this never asked any of us how we felt about it before hand. I guess they felt that the term “African- American” was more regal than the the term ” Black”, which is utter, absolute nonsense in my book.
I believe its about making money. Hollywood will not put Zoe with a black male actress because the film just wouldn’t sell. White men, black men, white women, black women ect. are racist even if they cant see it themselves. All people to a degree harbor prejudices about other races. Its not a bad thing its just how life works. White men would have no interest in seeing a movie with Zoe and a black man. Why? Because there is racism involved. And since blacks make up about 15% of America, it would make sense to cater to the other 70% of the country that’s white. 15% includes other races. If hollywood thought they could make money doing a movie like this webpage would like to see, they would do it. America still harbors too much racism even if the racist people cant see it themselves.
White men control America because there are more white men than black men. Many times more. Black men control many countries in sub saharan africa. Arab men control many middle eastern countries. Its really that simple. Dont get so upset that white men control America. Its because there are more of them.
Life imitates art. Of the actresses you mentioned:
Zoe Saldana, engaged to Keith Britton (white male). Halle Berry, divorced from model Gabriel Aubry (white male). Kerry Washington, engaged to actor David Moscow 2004-2007 (white male). Rosario Dawson, dated Jason Lewis, Colin Farrel,Matheiu Schreyer (white males).
Halle was never married to Gabriel.
You’re really petty for this article. Black this, white that…. damn nonsense.
No one of these women is in a relationship to be more popular – that’s a distorted mind game you have created. Zoe Saldana for instance has been with the guy for 10 years. That’s called love. Halle Berry was already popular when she chose to have a baby with a white guy. They do it because they are attracted to these men, not just to be ‘accepted’ as that is the only way you can justify it. People are attracted to whoever they are attracted to.
In fact doing the opposite – and neglecting a certain act – as someone mentioned above that Denzel didn’t kiss Roberts out of respect for black women(?), that to me is worse. If it was the other way round it would appear racist. If that is true I have no respect for him. As I would if it was Roberts rejecting him. It’s all stupid really, and no-one’s business but theirs who these actresses decide to date.
Why is it that Black women like Halle Berry, Zoe Saldana, Zoe Isabella Kravitz and her mother Lisa Bonet, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Stacey Dash, Jada Pinkett Smith,Thandie Newton, Rosario Dawson, Kimberly Elise, Garcelle Beauvais, etc., got to screw White men in movies to be successful. They are called WBBMW (White Boys Black Movie Whores).
And when it’s a black man with a whitewoman it’s a modern movie ?
Name three movies with a black man doing the Halle Barry to a white woman.
Thank you for another informative website. The place else may just I get that type of information written in such a perfect means? I’ve a project that I’m just now operating on, and I’ve been on the look out for such info.
Very nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to mention that I’ve truly loved surfing around your weblog posts. After all I’ll be subscribing for your feed and I’m hoping you write once more very soon!
When it comes to Zoe though there is something there in her acting range that speaks potential big time, not to mention appeal, and if she wants to avoid hollywood typecast of black women, she should by all means never forget where she came from and stick to it, shes got a long way to go yet though, and she seems to all ready be running to whiteness, already i know, . if you ask me VIOLA DAVIS is the one to become a legend, but she plays asexual roles that don’t place her in compromising situations with white men, not to mention she is not “biracial” phenotypically, but you know what, better a black woman who plays this kind of roles get an oscar than the one who takes of her clothes on screen and gets raped by a whiite leading costar, for reel, beacuse at least mammys are respected and untouched. ZOE has a long way to go and she will need be very smart and use her mind in terms of choosing roles, if she wants to become that one and only in between black woman that wins one with out necsseraly taking her clothes off or even costarring with a white male lead.
I have skimmed through this post, and was truly disturbed by some comments which seemed to imply that these successful women are answerable to the African American community. Halle Berry was raised predominately by her white mother. Her early experience of her African American roots was a father who thought it acceptable to abuse the mother of his child. Berry was abandoned by her African American father/heritage, and thus raised by her white mother, in a white family.
Thandie Newton was raised by an African mother, and a white father in a sleepy Cornwall town, which would have been a white middle-class community. Newton later studied at Cambridge University. Identifying her to the African American plight is a complete fallacy. Her African family were never sold into slavery, she does not comprehend the diaspora and the rejection experienced by African Americans. In Africa Halle Berry, Newton, and anyone of mixed parentage would not be considered black. They would live in a community of their own.
Education, Education is the only tool you need to fight racial difference. By education I mean going to school, going to college, and actually applying oneself – thus adopting white collar jobs, otherwise predominately held for white middle class Americans . Fight racial difference with your brains, and ability to write, and communicate yourselves coherently. Idiotically white Americans are known universally for being less then bright, hence had the African American communities united, and E. D. U. C. A. T. E. D themselves, and not brought into rap culture, and its stereotypes, they would be surpassing their white peers. Contrary to popular belief rap music is not black music! Rap music was created by the Tavistock Institute, which is only their to serve one agenda. Rap music is crap music.
AMEN finally someone who knows their stuff i’m so sick of black people being in the state that their in when they can be so much better and then using highly known and famous black people as a scapegoat when people criticize them.
