Is Australia A Racist Nation Against Minorities? Twenty Percent Decline In South Asian Students Studying In Australia Due To Racism & Violence!!!
Last week Saturday, 21-year-old accounting student Nitin Garg, was stabbed to death in Melbourne Australia . Garg is of South Asian descent. He was traveling to his part-time job at the fast food joint Hungry Jacks. According to the BBC, there has been a sharp decline of South Asian students studying overseas in Australia due to racism.
The Australian Tourism Forecast Committee predicts a 21% decline of 4000 South Asian students studying in Australia this year. The Australian Tourism Forecast Committee statistics indicate the drop in applications from South Asian students will cost Australia $70 million dollars.
The Melbourne police statistics are 1,447 South Asians have been victims of attacks in the state of Victoria in twelve months since July 2008.
South Asian student activist, Guatam Gupta, says the Melbourne police are downplaying the racist violence against South Asians even though they are being targeted by racists.
Garg death has intensified the friction between the Indian and Australian governments.
The Australian government and Melbourne police have attempted to downplay the brutal murder of Garg as just an anomaly. However, due to international media attention, the Australian government has been forced to accept responsibility to curb racist violence against minorities. South Asians aren’t the only minorities being targeted by racists.
Last year, a Sudanese refugee Dylan Sabatino, was murdered by an Australian Clinton Rintoull. Rintoull said he intended to “kill the blacks.”
Also, some South Asian activists blame the Australian media for having an ambivalent attitude towards the racism and violence against South Asian people. The international community is paying attention and Australia’s reputation has been shattered. According to media reports, Indian students have appealed to the South Asian media because the Australian media have an apathetic attitude that is deleterious.
South Asians students are staying away from Australia due to being victims of racism. In fact, more than 70,000 Indian students studied in Australia last year. Australia is one of the most richest countries in the world but Australia is more racist than North America.
The Australian government is downplaying the incredible racism South Asian students are experiencing in Australia. I am horrified. I always thought about visiting Australia. Now I can honestly say I am uncertain if I want to visit Australia anymore.
Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd traveled to India to attempt to calm to fears of the Indian government. Foreign students are important to Australia’s economy. For instance, 117,000 South Asians studied in Australia last year. Foreign students are big business in Australia, it is a $15.4 billion dollar industry and is Australia’s fourth largest export earner.
The truth is, the Australian government realized educated South Asian students are vital to the Australian economy. Why doesn’ t Australia have stricter punishment for racist attacks against minorities? The Australian government needs to do more to fight against racism against people of colour in Australia.

I feel that Australians have always been racist, they feel that the whites are supreme human beings , when in fact they are the worst kind of people on this planet. I would also blame the Indians studying there, why do you guys have to go there and suffer, there are more than enough opportunities elsewhere.
Look at this as a wake up call, go to australia and you could be killed.
Hi Rajeev, I think the reason South Asian students are studying in Australia is to obtain an education in the west. I know in Canada, some South Asians and other minorities encoutner incredible racism in terms of looking for employment. One of the racist tricks human resource recruiters utilize in the western world is to deny job applicants jobs claiming they don’t have “western education” or “western work experience”. I think this is the reason why so many South Asian families are sending their children to study in Australia and other western countries instead of obtaining post secondary education in India.

Australians are the most racist and bigoted people in the world. I used to think that the Germans were the most hateful but the Aussies are much worse. Just look at what they did to the Aboriginals. They massacred them, raped them, and destroyed their culture. And now they giving the Indians the ‘special treatment’. In historical context, today’s Australia is like the USA in the 60s. What a bunch of evil minded people. who wants to go to Australia,… will rather go somewhere else where human rights is appreciated…………..

My goodness, I have lived in Australia for 9 years and have been loving every minute of it. I came as an international student from the US (mind you, I am of an Indian heritage), and now this is my home. Never witnessed, nor experienced any form of racism since my arrival. I received racist hate mail while living in the US, but nothing like that in Australia.
So I feel the need to defend this great nation.
You have claimed that white Australians are supreme to other races. If you have bothered to check the news lately (Australian news too, not just pathetic Indian sensationalist propaganda), you will clearly see that murders on Indians have been committed by fellow Indians, and bashings have been committed by ethnic gangs, specifically Asian and/or Lebanese. White people have done very minimal to absolutely NO hate crimes against Indians, yet they are continuously receiving ALL THE BLAME they surely do NOT deserve!!!!!!!!!!

Take a look at how hateful India is. You automatically claim that EVERY attack on an Indian in Australia is racist BEFORE there is any evidence. Indian students are being unfairly targeted by racists in Australia this is a fact! Nitin Garg this innocent South Asian man he was minding his own business and he was murdered this is a fact! It’s worth pointing out, that so far, this is the only case of Indian student being murdered in Australia in which the murderers didn’t turn out to be Indian themselves.
Admittedly, there have been only three cases that have hit the international headlines, which kind of indicates a level of hysteria and hyperbole around this issue.
Of the the other two, the most controversial was that Gurshan Singh, a 4 yo toddler, by Punjabi taxi driver Gursewak Dhillon. The last was Randjodh Singh, who was murdered by an Indian couple, who set fire to his face while he was dying.

What the statistics allegedly refer to is 1447 people in a statistical category known as “of South Asian appearance”. That’s the estimated number of these people who were the victims of something called “violent crime” (a category that includes robbery and assault). According to these stats, Indians are actually under represented in assaults, but over represented in robberies.
Gupta misquotes that statistic a lot. He evidently finds it useful. But even if accurately quoted, we have no idea how useful it really is in finding the truth, because for some weird reason the Victoria Police refuse to release the methodology.

I think it’s more to do with the fact that, as of April this year, they’ve stopped giving people permanent residency to people who complete mickey mouse courses in things like cooking or hairdressing. The largest single chunk of Indian students came to Australia to study those two things.
