Can Freida Pinto Breakthrough In Hollywood Or Bollywood?

freida-pinto

Freida Pinto isn’t the star of Slumdog Millionaire, but she’s the breakout star of the movie. Although, Dev Patel is the lead in Slumdog Millionaire, it is obvious the press and the public are fascinated with the  beautiful Indian  actress Freida Pinto.

I notice a lot of the discussion on the internet pertains to Freida’s appearance. Some people don’t believe Frieda is Indian, they believe she can pass for Hispanic or Latino.

Some folks feel Freida  has a more “western” appearance.

I have also read comments that some people don’t believe Freida is Indian because her surname is “Pinto”.

I checked out IMDB.COM and Freida is definitely Indian she was born in India.

What do you think? Do you think Freida can make it in Hollywood or Bollywood or both?

As much as i want the lovely Ms.Pinto and other minority actors to succeed in Hollywood, i’m afraid it’s not entirely possible considering her accent as well as the limited quantity and quality of roles tailored for people of color. Unfortunately, in Hollywood, there’s only so many roles she can play with her accent. I’m not saying it’s impossible for an ‘outsider’ to make it in Hollywood but they definitely face an uphill struggle. And btw, she is a bona fide Indian. In Western India, there’s a state called Goa which was colonized by Portugal. As a result of the Portuguese occupation, many local Indian converted to Christianity which explains the ‘western’ sounding names such as D’souza, Gonsalves and Carvahlo. I don’t persay know if Ms.Pinto is Goanese but since, she was in her own words “born and bred in Mumbai”, which happens to be a city close to Goa, i’m guessing that should explain her un-Indian sounding name.

redapple thanks for explaining Freida’s “surname”. I have heard about Goa. Maybe you do have a point Freida may struggle in Hollywood because of her accent but also because she is an actress of colour. I just hope Freida does get more work because of Slumdog Millionaire. Maybe some director or producer will notice her talents? I do believe Freida can make it in bollywood for sure though.

Maybe if people like redapple weren’t so prejudiced the world would quit taking such a stance. You try to sound so intelligent yet you make stupid comments like ‘She can’t do this or that because of her accent or because she’s a minority.’

It’s a shame people like you are so sensitive to another person’s skin color or the way they talk. I bet you think all southerners are stupid too.

When people like you quit expecting the world to be prejudiced, maybe it will quit also.

The fact that a select group of people think Pinto looks more ‘western’ in appearance than ‘indian’ is ignorant and absurd. What would they consider actual individuals of ‘Indian’ ancestry to look like? Anyone who knows anything about India would know that it is one of the most diverse nations of the world. In other words,it is a nation of a diverse mixture of different peoples, ethnicities and colors. Hollywood is living in its own bubble of ideals which feed and mislead the rest of the world. Pinto is recognized because she fits a bill of ideals based on how her face is composed and her skintone which is ‘neutral’,therefore she can ‘pass’ as a person of latin-american ancestry. People need to do their homework and find out about the world around them. Pinto is just a fraction of the diverse beauty, of India, there are many actresses who are just as beautiful and very talented actresses but do not receive the same media attention in the west for obvious reasons such as language barrier and cultural isolation.
