Roger Wins 54th ATP Tour Title and First Clay Court Title of 2008!!!
I watched the live feed of the Estoril Open men’s final between Roger Federer and Nikolay Davydenko. Roger and Nikolay are the only top ten players competing in Estoril this week. Lisbon looks like a beautiful city I might visit Lisbon in the future! In the first set Roger had a few break point opportunities on Davydenko’s serve but blew it. Davydenko had a break point leading 4-3 for a 5-3 lead but Roger saved the break point with an ace. Next, Davydenko gained a set point at 5-4 on Roger’s serve and Roger rises to the challenge hitting an ace. Roger holds for 5-5 but after Davydenko reached 6-5 in the first set he had another set point on Roger’s serve and choked an easy forehand. In the tiebreaker Roger zoomed to a 5-1 lead only to watch Davydenko claw back to 5-5 in the first set tiebreaker.
Roger hits a fantastic forehand and Davydenko blows an easy shot to lose the first set. Next, Davydenko takes a break to be looked at by the trainer. At the end of the first set from 5-4 on I felt Roger played like the Roger I remember the incredible tennis champion that has nerves of steel under pressure. Davydenko had plenty of chances to win the first set yet he capitulated under the pressure. I really thought that Davydenko should of won the first set he was playing better then Roger for most of the first set. However, Roger demonstrated at the end of the first set why he is the best. Davydenko didn’t believe he could beat Roger I could see the fear in his eyes. Even though Davydenko just destroyed Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal at the Miami Masters last week he still fears Roger Federer.
In the second set despite leading 2-1 Davydenko retires! I cannot believe it! I am really surprised that Davydenko would pull out of a high profile match like this. Well, a win is a win and Roger wins the match defeating Davydenko 7-6 1-2 ret. Roger wins his 54th ATP Tour title. Roger really needed this title to stop the bleeding he’s lost a ton of confidence this year but he now has another clay court title. The title is very important his first clay court victory besides the Hamburg Masters Event. It would of been very embarrassing for Roger not to win the Estoril Open because he is the world number one player. Of course, since I am a big fan of Roger I wanted him to complete the match and get the win on regular terms.
However, a win, is a win, is a win. I think Roger will feel satisfied that he at least won an ATP Tour title this year on clay. Clay is also Roger’s worst surface but he competed well. I will admit I didn’t think Roger played his best tennis though. I am surprised at Nikolay Davydenko he retired I thought he had wrested with his demons of choking and not believing in himself. Would Davydenko retire against anyone else on the ATP Tour? I am a bit disappointed in Nikolay today it appears he just gave up even though he was in the lead in the second set. Also, the match is an ATP Tour final will Nikolay pull out of Monte Carlo next week he really let Roger off the hook in this match.
Why Do People Know More About Martin Luther King Than Sojourner Truth?
Martin Luther King is best known for his speech “I have A Dream”, Sojourner Truth was an African American feminist and abolitionist she lived during the nineteenth century. Sojourner Truth is best known for her speech “Ain’t I A Woman”. Sojourner Truth is important to history because she brought to prominence the struggles black women encountered in relation to race and gender politics. Sojourner Truth lived a life of hardship and struggle but she persevered she fled her slave master, and advocated for equal rights for all women. Sojourner Truth should be more well known in fact the title of African American feminist bell hooks debut non fiction book was called “Ain’t I A Woman”.
DVD Review: Secretary Is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Breakthrough Performance!
If you want to watch a dark romantic comedy rent or buy a copy of the 2002 independent film “Secretary” on DVD. Maggie Gyllenhaal shines in the lead role as Lee Holloway. Lee Holloway is a depressed, lonely, suicidal, young woman she recently was released from a mental institution. Lee feels there is a void in her life she has emotions of melancholy and despair. The movie Secretary explores the alienation young adults encounter after graduating from high school. Where does your life go after school ends? How do you find yourself? What is your true identity?
Lee is having a hard time transitioning back to the real world her parents marriage is also on the rocks. Lee is not sure if the real world is where she belongs she doesn’t feel loved. Whenever Lee is unhappy and depressed she mutilates herself with a knife because she believe she deserves to experience the feelings of bitterness and unhappiness. Lee is bored with her life and restless.
Lee meets a young man Peter he is boring and Lee isn’t really interested in him. Lee figures since she’s bored she might as well date Peter since he does give her some affection and attention. Peter doesn’t excite Lee though. Peter asks Lee to marry him and she agrees only because she feels she should. Peter seems like a nice guy but Lee keeps on wondering if they are more exciting men out there? Lee decides she wants a better life and she begins takes a typing course discovering she’s good at it. Lee decides to apply to an secretary job for an attorney Edward Grey.
James Spader’s character Mr. Grey is a recluse, he is also into S&M. Mr. Grey is attracted to Lee the feelings are mutual but Mr. Grey cannot muster the courage to tell Lee that is deeply in love with her. Mr. Grey admonishes Lee for typos and spelling errors and this turns both of them on. Mr. Grey tells Lee to assume certain S&M positions and smacks her behind. Mr. Grey is all about being the dominant man and he wants a secretary to submit to his sexual fantasies. Mr. Lee and Grey don’t have actual intercourse but they play a lot of mind games. Mr. Grey is the aggressor and Lee is in the submissive role. Some feminists are outraged at the movie Secretary because they think the movie is sexist and dehumanizing to women.
Some people might not like Secretary because the movie is extremely sexual and very frank about the issues of sexuality. Mr. Grey has a hard time connecting with women he doesn’t want to have intercourse with Lee but he is sexually aroused when she is submissive. Lee is also turned on by Mr. Grey she masturbates in her bedroom rubbing her fingers between her crotch screaming the words “I’m your secretary!”, “I’m your secretary!”. “I’m your secretary!” over and over again until she has an intense orgasm. Also after Mr. Grey yells at Lee she is turned on and she mastrubates again in the washroom stall touching herself and climaxing again.
Lee is searching for some meaning in her life. Mr. Grey is afraid he will fall in love with Lee and he fires her. Lee becomes upset puts on a wedding dress and engages in a three day hunger strike to prove to Mr. Grey she loves him. I won’t spoil the ending but Secretary is a gritty, wonderful, quirky, dark, romantic comedy.
Serena Advances To Family Circle Cup Final
Today Serena played a very talented young Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the women’s semifinals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston South Carolina. Cornet is only eighteen years old and I am impressed with her clay court game she moves very well on the slow clay. Cornet is very quick and on the WTA tour a woman needs speed to compete with the best players . Cornet also advanced the semifinals of Amelia Island last week. Cornet pushed Serena hard but Serena still won in straight sets 7-5 6-3. Serena will play the Russian Vera Zvonareva in the women’s final. Serena will also rise to number seven in next week’s WTA rankings passing her sister Venus.
Federer Vs Davydenko Showdown In Lisbon Final Tomorrow!
The semifinal results are no surprise world number one Roger Federer and world number four Nikolay Davydenko both advanced to the men’s final of Estoril Open in Lisbon Portugal. The surprise is that Roger Federer had to claw back from a set down to defeat 104 ranked German Denis Gremelmayr 2-6 7-5 6-1. Roger just hasn’t looked sharp this week. Roger should of hammered Gremelmayr in straight sets.
Russian tennis star Nikolay Davydenko destroyed Florent Serra 6-2 6-2 in straight sets. Nikolay Davydenko appears to be in imperious form. Davydenko’s confidence is at an all time high he won the Miami Masters last week and now he’s won ten straight matches. Roger will have to play much better tomorrow because Davydenko is a top five player he is also dangerous on the slow red clay courts.
Serena Defeats Maria Sharapova Advances To Semifinals Of Family Circle Cup!!!!
Serena Williams prevailed defeated Maria Sharapova today 7-5 4-6 6-1. Well isn’t this interesting I just checked ESPN.COM tennis page and there is a small article on Serena’s incredible victory. On the Yahoo Tennis page there is only a small piece on Serena’s triumph. Maria Sharapova is overrated yes she’s a solid player but I’m tired of the media hyping this wannabe Barbie doll.
During a changeover Michael Joyce Maria Sharapova’s coach was so frustrated he was going to call Serena the “B” word but stopped himself. I am sure Serena overheard Joyce’s comment it is pretty tacky on Michael Joyce’s part. Serena let her tennis racket do the talking sending a message to Maria Sharapova today that she dominates her on the tennis courts.
If Maria Sharapova is so great why isn’t she dominating the WTA Tour? It is obvious that Serena is a better tennis player then Maria Sharapova. However, when Serena beats Maria it isn’t big news yet the press actions speaks volumes. Today’s match is the first time Serena and Maria have competed on the slow clay courts and Serena won and it is a big victory.
Serena’s win once again shatters the hype around Maria Sharapova she had a great Australian Open but she hasn’t looked very good since. Sharapova lost to fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in Indian Wells yet she claims her shoulder is injured. I think its pretty flagrant for Maria Sharapova to use a shoulder injury excuse when Svetlana clearly outplayed her a few weeks ago.
Also, since the media are trying to hype Maria Sharapova I think its a big deal that Serena has defeated Maria Sharapova for the fourth time in a row. Serena and Maria are two of the most popular players on the WTA Tour Serena deserves praise for beating the Barbie Doll of the WTA Tour. It is just interesting the hypocrisy of the sports media. Serena beats the new “It” girl of women’s tennis again for the fourth time in a row and there is a muted response from the sports media. It is just interesting to notice the double standards still exist in women’s tennis.
Serena is playing incredible tennis she defeated world number one Justine Henin, number three Svetlana Kuznetsova, and world number five Jelena Jankovic at the Miami Masters. Now Serena has defeated the fourth ranked woman Maria Sharapova. The rankings mean nothing to the Williams Sisters the bottom line is when Serena is serious about tennis she is the best female tennis player of her generation and she proved it once again today. Sharapova was on a tear this year with a 22-1 record yet she has a losing record against Serena Williams. Serena also tied Venus with the fastest serve on the WTA at 129 miles per hour. Serena serves bigger and harder then Rafael Nadal.
Serena has won the last four meetings against Maria Sharapova and now leads their head to head series 5-2. Sharapova has won a lot of matches this year winning in the Australian Open, an event in the Middle East, and the Amelie Island clay court event last week. The media have been speculating that Sharapova could be number one before the year is over. I think anything is possible in tennis but people should not underestimate Serena Williams.
Serena proves once again that she is the best player on the WTA Tour when she is serious about the game. Serena really looks motivated this year well done Serena!
Is Senator Barack Obama An Uppity Black Man?
Senator Barack Obama recently made a comment at an event in San Francisco about “bitterness” in the lower classes. Hillary Clinton John McCain, and the news media jumped on Senator Obama. First off, just look at Barack Obama he is a very attractive black man he’s tall, he’s fit, he’s wonderful. The press and Senator Obama’s enemies are now trying to brand him as the uppity educated Negro that is too distant from the masses.
Senator Obama is not W.E.B. Du Bois. If you want to read about a black elitist please read the works of W.E.B. Du Bois. Visit the local public library or bookstore and you will be shocked at the hypocrisy of W.E.B. Du Bois.
W.E.B. Du Bois was a snob he also wrote about the “talented tenth” which is the upper crust black elite. Du Bois view was only the “talented tenth” were the “only suitable “leaders” for the black race. Although W.E.B. Du Bois is very important because he founded the NAACP he also was very prejudiced against poorer people. Some scholars believe Du Bois appropriated aspects of white culture in relation to class and privilege.
Senator Obama appeals to me because I think he is so inspiring due to his hard work and determination. Now of course, Senator Obama is a gorgeous black man but he’s also a very intelligent black man. I admire Senator Obama a great deal because he is demonstrating to young blacks we can have dreams and we should strive for our dreams. Why can’t young blacks believe we can shatter the glass ceiling? The pernicious attitude of the mainstream media is that young blacks we should “stay in our place” at the back of the bus. The question remains when will it ever be the right time to advance forward in society? Well some people need to understand this is the year 2008 not the year 1955. We have a right to demand more for ourselves in terms of advancing our lives and political careers.
Senator Obama’s presence has made an incredible difference to me in so many ways. The racist tactics of the Clintons, Gloria Steinem, Geraldine Ferraro and other Democrats are a true eye opener. People complain about the Republicans but it is clear Democrats have no respect for black voters. It is time for black voters to explore new political options.
The media have always tried to frame Senator Obama as this “uppity black man” that is too distant from the masses. It is true that Senator Obama is very educated but so are the Clintons. Do people want political leaders that aren’t educated, that didn’t work hard for success? The double standards and the hypocrisy is incredible.
It is interesting that Senator Hillary Clinton and John McCain are slamming Barack calling him “bitter”. I just think its interesting the Clintons are incredibly well educated, very rich more rich then Senator Obama. Hillary Clinton used to be on the board for Walmart. The Clintons are America’s political aristocracy.
Roger Advances To Semifinals Of Estoril Open
Isn’t Roger Federer just the perfect man? Has there ever been another top male athlete more sensitive then Roger? Seriously, he’s kind, sweet, gentle, warm, and he’s a great tennis champion. Despite the two rain delays today was an easy day at the office for the supreme world number one Roger Federer. The beautiful gifted Swiss Master easily defeated the Portuguese player Frederico Gil 6-4 6-1. Roger was in fine form smacking winners all over the place. Good job Roger!
