Girlfriends Canceled by The CW Network Is Anyone Actually Surprised?

Well, the CW Network didn’t wait long immediately after the writer’s strike ended the black female sitcom “Girlfriends” has been canceled. The truth is ever since Jill Marie Jones left the show the spark from Girlfriends was gone. Jill Marie Jones was the spark the fire that made Girlfriends special. Now for Girlfriends fans don’t forget the show is available on DVD now.

It is not hard to decipher why Girlfriends never received the attention it deserved. Girlfriends was a great show with an outstanding talented cast. Girlfriends was the best black adult comedy since “A Different World” and “In Living Single”. Girlfriends demonstrated that young black women can be hard working, have good jobs, love lives, and still struggle like everyone else.

The mainstream media hyped Sex And The City to the maximum because the cast was white. Sex And The City is pure fantasy to be rich, wear great clothes, and live in posh apartments. Sex And The City always avoided the issue of race and reality. Girlfriends was a great television the show was more truthful and realistic. Girlfriends dealt with serious topics such as body image, employment discrimination, sexism, racism, homophobia, and safer sex, in an intelligent and witty way.

I wonder why the CW Network waited until after the writer’s strike to cancel the program? I think this is very disrespectful to the fans and the actors but that’s showbiz. Why wait until now? I believe Girlfriends deserves a proper series finale. Now that Girlfriends is off the air black television is basically non existent.  Notice NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, haven’t bothered to develop a black comedy or drama for years. I believe this should be a wake up call for black viewers and for people that are interested in entertainment.

Yes the cast was so funny and the show got better and better over time. Now there are no black female sitcoms on television.

    not cool.

I heard about this yesterday -I didn’t think they would renew for a 9th season, but I can’t believe that they won’t even air the remaining episodes

totally agree that the show hasn’t been the same since Jill Marie Jones left, but it was still fun to watch…

I also loved a different world and living single

I am sending a letter to all the executives at the CW. In a situation like this the fans MUST CONTACT THE POWERS THAT BE. While it is admirable to post our love of the show on message boards and blog sites, we must take the next step, and send a letter of petition to the CW.

I’d like to thank the owner of this blog for this post and for providing the contact information.

If you would like to copy and paste the body of my letter within the context of your own, you may view the letter via my blog on: http://www.myspace.com/trulymahogany

As an actress I am extremely offended by this decision. And they have the audacity to cancel a show, with an all Black cast, during Black History Month.

Wow! What a slap in the face. Speak up people and be heard because if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.

i loved girlfriends when it was aired in Ghana by the local television station. very fresh and indulging…and i do agree that more programs like these should be encouraged. the show definitely deserves a grand finale and i do think it has more drama and energy than sex and the city.

I agree with you 100% one this one, I even linked to your topic, because I really miss the show. And it’s sad because television is just getting whiter and whiter. The most we get is one, not as stereotypical black chacracter in an otherwise all white cast.

i beleive that white actors are more marketable. I know this is a bold statement coming from one who is black himself, but take a real good look at who is most popular and successfull in television.

Samuel white actors may be marketable but is this right? Remember in the 1980s the Cosby Show was the number one show on American television. Bill Cosby proved black actors can appeal to ALL audiences. Now television executives won’t even give black shows a CHANCE on the major networks. Also notice a trend the new black sitcoms are all copycats of the Cosby Show. Girlfriends was fresh and interesting a show about young black women and this show smashed all the negative stereotypes around black female sexuality.
