It is Official: Tyra Banks Hates Black Gay Men And Black Women

tyra2.jpgjaymanuel.jpgmiss-jay-alexander-split-newswire-335a051507.jpg

I can honestly say I will no longer watch America’s Next Top Model. I am disgusted with the hypocrisy, homophobia, double standards, racism, misandry, and sexism of the program. Tyra Banks preaches to young black women to love themselves. How can anyone like Tyra Banks, she is so plastic and fake?

On Tyra’s talk show and ANTM we see Tyra prancing around with her fake contact lenses, and shoulder length weaves.I am not suggesting black women cannot wear weaves or perm their hair. Black women have a right to style their hair anyway they want. I guess for some females they want to try new hairstyles and that’s fair.Nobody wants to wear the same hairstyle all the damn time that’s boring and sometimes change is a good thing. After all, white women and other women of colour wear hair extensions, braids, and weaves too.

However, has anyone ever seen Tyra without her long weave? When have we ever seen girlfriend rock an afro, or twists, or braids? Can you imagine Tyra Banks without her Eurocentric appearance? Tyra has a European appearance with her light skin, contacts, and long weave is the image of blackness Hollywood says is palatable.

Would Tyra be popular with whites and blacks if she actually tried to not look and act so white? Its a fair question. Could it be if Tyra didn’t have her fake weave and rocked an afro the TV ratings would drop? If Tyra had a more Afrocentric appearance would this shock and turn off black and white television viewers and CW Network executives?

In the summer of 2007 a white Glamour Magazine editor made a racist and sexist statement at an industry meeting , she said she didn’t like seeing black women with natural hairstyles. You know black women that don’t wear hair extensions, perms, weaves, and straight hair. The white female executive from Glamour Magazine said braids, twists, and afros are a “no no” in a corporate environment.

Recently, Glamour Magazine had a damage control session in a closed meeting with a group of black women. Glamour Magazine clearly has a very good public relations team because they want the controversy to disappear. However, my dear readers we cannot let the Glamour Magazine episode vanish. We must pay attention to the messages society is transmitting through culture, hair, and language. We are all lectured in some way to conform to the representation of whiteness.

Trya Banks is following the same philosophy she is a pretentious hypocrite. Tyra preaches to young black women about loving themselves yet she embraces and conforms to the image of whiteness. Whiteness is the only representation that sells in the American fashion industry. Black women are encouraged through racist imagery such advertisements, magazines, television, product placements, and black celebrities such as Beyonce Knowles and Tyra Banks to act and look white.

Doesn’t anyone wonder why Tyra always wears the same long blonde or brown weave? Why does Beyonce wear the same blonde lace front wig all the damn time? Whiteness is the only acceptable image on television and the closer black women are to whiteness the more palatable they become. Whiteness is also the global standard of beauty that everyone is judged against. My perspective is that Tyra is actually a very negative influence on young black women. Is it okay for black women to be black on TV? Can black women ever be presented as being nice, intelligent, caring, young women that are not termagants?

I remember when Tyra admonished Danielle during one cycle about her country accent. Tyra’s attitude was disgusting, pernicious, and disgraceful. I understand the fact that Tyra is supposed to give the girls advice. I just have this feeling that Tyra was cognizant of the fact white America was “watching her”.

The great African American scholar W.E.B. Du Bois created the term “double consciousness” and the term was included in his powerful collection of essays called “The Souls Of Black Folk”. Its amazing that Du Bois analogy was created over one hundred years ago and it is still valid and makes perfect sense. Du Bois analogy refers to the fact black people we are conscious that we live in separate spheres. Tyra was criticizing Danielle because America’s Next Top Model is in the public domain on television for the world to watch. Tyra didn’t want a dark skinned black girl with a country accent to “mess up” her product.

Tyra wanted Danielle to not only speak “proper English” she also wanted Danielle to “act white” to not upset the white television audience. Black people we are well aware of the fact the white lens is constantly watching us. Blacks we become “perceptive” of the white gaze and in many ways we have to conform to function in society. Now why couldn’t Danielle speak with her country accent? Was Danielle’s accent really too hard to understand? Or was it because Tyra didn’t want to be reminded of “blackness” and she didn’t want her “brand” to be “tainted” and viewed as “too black”?

Tyra Banks has an image of being “colourless” she’s the light skinned young “colourless” black woman that white North America loves. Tyra’s kind of black but not too black she’s tries her best to be as boring as oatmeal. Tyra’s not political either she’s not really interested in black issues, she chooses to ignore race because she wants to make money.

Tyra is “aware” that the Eurocentric lens was paying close attention to the way she interacts with the black girls. Trya tries too hard to be “hands off” with the black girls she reminds me of Oprah. Tyra has no respect for other black women. Oprah has changed she used to be about black women’s issues but now Oprah is basically a white woman. Oprah is a shrewd business woman she has to be as white as possible in order to obtain white female acceptance. Its a a tricky balance the game Tyra and Oprah are playing they have to “act white” yet also distance themselves from black women’s issues. If you’ve been paying attention to both Tyra and Oprah’s shows they rarely discuss important issues that relates specifically to black women. Both Tyra and Oprah will lie to the public and say they are all about reaching “all women”.

People need to realize Oprah and Tyra’s gimmick is to use the word “all women” they really should just be honest and say they want to reach the “white female demographic.” Audre Lorde wrote in her groundbreaking book “Sister Outsider” there is no “global sisterhood” between white women and black women.

I mean why can’t they just be honest? Oprah and Tyra cannot appear to be “too black”. I mean can you imagine? Its like give me a break please. The only women Oprah and Tyra are interested in reaching are the white middle and upper class women with disposable income. Just be real ladies we undestand its just “business.”

Has anyone ever watched the Oprah show lately? Tyra’s talk show is very similar she’s copying the Oprah blueprint by acting so white. Notice in the audience you see a sea of white faces on both Tyra and Oprah’s television shows. Has anyone ever wondered why? Its all due to market research and “branding” the product. Oprah and Tyra will lie and say that its just a coincidence that so many white women are in the show’s audience. I’m not buying that for a second. Oprah is a shrewd businesswoman and Oprah knows the more white women in the audience the more likely white women will tune in to watch. It just makes practical business sense.

Tyra and Oprah realize their target audience is white women and not black women. Yet the black media consistently present Oprah and Tyra as “groundbreaking” black females when they both conform to the representation of whiteness. Tyra and Oprah will never do anything to “upset” the white female demographic because they want to make as much money as possible off of white women. Oprah and Tyra have to sell products, advertising space, and to continue to generate revenue through the white female demographic. Tyra is never going to “rock the boat” and upset the white girls. Tyra may criticize the white girls but she is never ever cruel to them. The way Tyra bashes and admonishes the black girls I sense Tyra has internalized racism issues. Maybe Tyra hates being black? Maybe the problem is really Tyra?

I think Tyra is just jealous of the black girls because they are more attractive. Maybe Tyra just hates dark skinned black women? After all, does anyone remember the episode of Tyra’s show and Naomi Campbell was on? Tyra acted like a scared kitten. Tyra wasn’t just preaching to Danielle to speak with a so called “proper” American accent. Tyra was screeching at Danielle to conform to white middle class American standards of respectability. Make no mistake Tyra wasn’t just telling Danielle she had to speak “proper” to succeed in modelling. Tyra was letting Danielle know that she was embarrassing her and her “brand” in front of the white American audience. Isn’t being black good enough? Shouldn’t Tyra have told Danielle that blackness is beautiful? Tyra has a clear disgust for any image of blackness. Tyra runs in the opposite direction of anything relating to black culture. Tyra is a termagant, I don’t know how people can stand her? Tyra is hardest on all the black girls because she knows white viewers will complain and say that she’s “favouring” the blacks.

Tyra also has an intense hatred for other black women its so obvious. Tyra has lashed out at Bree, Danielle, and this season Ebony. I can honestly say Bree, Danielle, and Ebony are more beautiful on the inside and out then the so called supermodel Tyra Banks. When Ebony said she didn’t want to be on the program anymore Tyra called Ebony “a quitter”. Tyra was shocked that a contestant actually told her that her TV show was whack. Maybe, just maybe, the reason Ebony wanted to leave the show was because she couldn’t handle being around Tyra Banks since she’s such a mean spirited vindictive person. Ebony actually arrived at her own decision that she didn’t want to be a model. Did you see Ebony run out the room? Girlfriend, ran like the wind to get away from the Medusa Tyra Banks.

Another thing I resent about America’s Next Top Model is the way the show deals with homosexuality. Homosexuality is a freak side show on America’s Next Top Model its a total joke. I remember there was a beautiful lesbian on the program her name was Kim and the lesbophobia on the show was incredible. I recall Jay Manuel telling Kim to be more “feminine” I wanted to smack him.

The part of the program I find most offensive is way the gay men of colour are framed. Gay men of colour on America’s Next Top Model are the “fairy godmothers”. Jay Manuel and Miss Jay sprinkle their “fairy wisdom” on the naive young heterosexual girls on how to be a model. So basically you have two gay black men telling women how to act more “feminine”. Isn’t that kind of sexist and homophobic? Why didn’t Tyra hire female consultants to teach the girls on how to act like a model? Wouldn’t that make more sense? The gay men teaching the girls to twirl and move their hips on the runway may seem like “entertainment” but its actually an abhorrent form of homophobia. I think the reason Jay Manuel and Miss Jay were hired was because they are the humour segment of the show. People are privately laughing in their homes “look at those two black fags.” Let’s be honest and real here we know what people say behind closed doors.

I am disgusted with the stereotypes of gay men of colour because we are so marginalized. Yes, I am cognizant of the fact gay men are involved in the fashion industry. However, not every gay man talks with a lisp, twirls around, and walks with a limp wrist.

A good friend of mine we have a constant joke because I don’t care about fashion. I mean obviously I wear men’s clothing its important for a man to have a positive image of himself . The way a man will dress says a lot about a man’s personality and self image. I just feel like the image of gay black men on television is very negative. The last positive image of a black gay male on mainstream television was Carter on Spin City. I loved Carter because I could identify with him. Carter was definitely gay but he wasn’t a stereotype he wasn’t a queen. Carter dressed in men’s clothing, he liked sports, and he also liked guys.

My friend says I am different in a way compared to some gay men because I have absolutely no interest in fashion. I don’t read fashion magazines to find out the latest trends in men’s fashion. I don’t pluck my eyebrows, I don’t wear makeup, or lipstick, I don’t wear nail polish. I understand that there are drag queens they are an integral part of the queer black family. A lot of drag queens are involved with charity work and other community programs to support the gay black community.

I am not suggesting that black gay men cannot perform in drag if they want to. If this is Miss Jay’s real personality then that’s his personal business. I am only arguing why does this fairy godmother stereotype have to be the only representation of gay black men on television?

I like to wear nice suits, dress pants, tie, or sweater, or blazer if I am going to attend an important event. I don’t watch Fashion Television, sorry Vogue is not a bible it doesn’t interest me. I am not suggesting there aren’t gay men that are not effeminate because there are. I can even be effervescent at times I can admit that. I am not a macho man either but why does Miss Jay and Jay Manuel have to be so feminine?

However, I am aware of the fact people are actually “laughing” at Miss Jay and Jay Manuel they are the circus clowns. Jay Manuel and Miss Jay are the bizarre entertainment while Tyra Banks is ringmaster of the show. Miss Jay and Jay Manuel also have to be “sassy” and make shocking jokes so all the girls will giggle and laugh. Yet the truth for Miss Jay and Jay Manuel the television audience are “laughing at them” not “with them”. People don’t realize Miss Jay and Jay Manuel are caricatures. Perhaps Miss Jay and Jay Manuel are cognizant of this? I guess all those queens care about is cashing their next pay cheque?

I also think there is a subversive element of homophobia to the program. Miss Jay and Jay Manuel are extreme stereotypes of gay men of colour. Its the pathetic, homophobic, racist, and sexist imagery of gay black men that sells. Is it necessary for Miss Jay and Jay Manuel to be such cardboard cut out stereotypes? Miss Jay prances around in women’s makeup, wears women’s clothing, and high heeled shoes. Miss Jay looks like a complete joke.

One argument is that this is just the way Miss Jay true personality. However, in the eyes of the black community and mainstream society people think “all” gay black men act like this. I find the homophobic imagery of Miss Jay sashaying across the catwalk and twirling around a bit unsettling.

The real issue I have with Miss Jay and Jay Manuel is that there is no diversity. I am not just focusing on America’s Top Model my argument is also about television in general. Where are the regular gay black men that I can recognize? Where are the gay black men that wear regular men’s clothing you know like the rest of us? I think this is the reason I miss Noah’s Arc so much. Why isn’t Noah’s Arc on the CW Network? The CW Network is the only TV channel that broadcast black television anyways.

I cannot believe Jay Manuel is a Canadian! Jay Manuel has to be one of the worst exports from Toronto Canada ever he has such a bad negative attitude. Jay Manuel always acts so bitchy and he’s very vindictive and mean spirited. I don’t like the image he presents on television. I don’t know if the writers of America’s Next Top Model tell Jay Manuel to act like this but he’s ugly on the inside and out.

Gay men of colour we are stereotyped as limp wristed sissies that wear women clothing or bitchy queens like Jay Manuel. Sorry, not all gay men of colour act like Miss Jay or Jay Manuel. No I am not a stone cold butch. I am not some S&M daddy but I like to wear baseball caps, I watch sports, I drink beer, and I don’t wear women’s clothing. Where are the gay black men that are not hairdressers, fashion stylists, effeminate photographers, or limp wristed queens? I guess for television rating the CW Network feels the need to marginalize gay men of colour and reduce us to sexist, misandrist, and racist stereotypes.

Jay Manuel I guess is the antidote to Miss Jay, he’s supposed to be the more butch gay man of colour. I just find Jay Manuel to be even more vulgar and worse then Miss Jay. Miss Jay seems to really care about the girls he wants them to succeed. Perhaps this is just a writing device? Maybe its just a gimmick the “hook” to attract an audience to see the next outrageous thing the two gay men will do next?

The reality television writers have to give Jay Manuel and Miss Jay distinctive personalities for the program to attract viewers. I guess for the CW Network they cannot have two gay men of colour that are actually “nice” people. Nice gay men are not entertaining for television. One gay black man has to be the stereotypical fag and the other has to be the annoying bitchy sea hag.

Jay Manuel comes across as a shrew no wonder the girls cry on the show because he’s such a blood thirsty monster. I just think America’s Top Model is such a disservice to black women and gay black men. Why are black women and black gay men stereotyped to the extreme on America’s Next Top Model?

Tyra is the executive producer of the program she has no excuses. Tyra claims she’s involved with the development and production of the show. Tyra and the CW Network will do anything to make money. I guess all Tyra Banks cares about is stereotyping black women as having haughty attitudes, and gay black men we are all limp wristed bitchy queens. The bottom line is America’s Next Top Model is a ratings winner for the CW Network. It appears Tyra has no real love for the black community she doesn’t care about the negative stereotypes, representations, and images that are broadcast. All Tyra Banks cares about is acquiring TV ratings, keeping her show on the air, and raking in more revenue.

I have always thought that Tyra tried too hard…she’s trying to be something she’s not. She’s not Oprah (who I admire and love but I’ve fallen off watching her show)…Tyra is a hypocrite; the way she handles those girls on ANTM is terrible; she praises one girl for something and then shuts one girl down for the same thing…it’s awful…I stopped watching the show after the season where white Nicole and black Nic were the finalist and white Nicole won because I felt that they were pushed by her sponsors to pick someone with more “mainstream” appeal (meaning someone “white”)…then when the girls appeared on her talk show, Nic asked Tyra for help with getting on and Tyra straight shut her down! It was public humiliation at its worst…

With her fake hair and fake-ass attitude, I’ve given up…ANTM is a joke…

Tyra does look white a lot, that is true (although I thought her eyes were real). I can’t stand that contact bullshit so slap on the wrist to Tyra for that. I guess her and Naomi aren’t so different after all!

the fact that Oprah could afford to buy Kingworld out and direct her own format makes your post very valid.

she also looks a lot fairer than previously.

    Butt,,

Oprah is not distancing herself from black issues.

she’s extended her show when she talked of retiring, so there could be deeper black content in the future. But lets face it, Oprah is middle aged. Her audience is predominantly middle aged.

The program that was really popular, with black females esp, was Riki Lake. Black youth thronged to her. she tapped into black culture like a white person never ever did. Blacks connected with her and opened to her, she was utterly respected. She was also closer to their age.

The fact is Oprah supports a black senator, helps black students world wide, preserved the futures of many blacks after Katrina with the help of white donations, but at the end of the day she is 53. The generation gap is real

Just to set the mood, I am not defending TB; I don’t know her personally. I am not Black, and I am not White (which constantly makes me wonder why American culture seems to revolve typically around only those two ethnicities… but that’s another subject matter), but my neutrality [I believe] helps me to see both sides… and sometimes neither.

One segment of ANTM, Tyra comments on an African model (I mean AFRICAN from Africa), she was gorgeous, and Tyra commented on her beauty, saying more or less how very glad she was to see a Black face on the show that was not “Eurofied”… and went on to comment on how the American standard for Black beauty was stereotypically white-washed, specifying Beyoncé, Alicia Keyes, Halle Berry, and the like. TB isn’t making this up herself; this is what we see on TV and in magazines. Take Queen Latifah for example: you couldn’t get much “Blacker” than her, but have you seen her Covergirl shots, and how she speaks on her TV commercials? I dare you to call her white-washed to her face, see what happens… And just in case some of you readers don’t know the real fact, there is no “White” English or “Black” English. It’s either proper or improper. Eminem is White, but that doesn’t make his English proper. The White people who speak “Redneck” or “Backwoods”, also improper English, so why isn’t there a label for that? Or did I just now make one?

About the two guys who are on her Modeling show, yes, they are very stereotyped. But no one held a gun to their heads to do the show. They could have turned down the offer. But they didn’t. And whether they did it for the money, or because they are friends with TB, the way they behave on TV (whether exaggerated or natural for them) is their business. So if you want to be mad at how homosexual men (of color, or of some color, or of no color) are portrayed in her show, be mad at the homosexual men who are on the show, showcasing their bitchiness, sashays, and limp wrists; don’t hate on TB. I, myself, am a partaker of the alternative lifestyle, and I don’t like some of the stereotypes, but I must admit, sometimes I do find them entertaining even though I don’t conform to such stereotypes… except during sex.

Anyhow, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and whether you think TB and any other African American is acting too White, well maybe they’re not acting. Maybe that’s who and how they actually are. Same goes for Tyra’s Little Helpers.

And just for my own clarification, you declared in your post, “…I like to wear nice suits, dress pants, tie, or sweater, or blazer if I am going to attend an important event…” As Afrocentric as you say you are, I doubt this is the garb that is worn in mainstream Africa. I guess we all conform to a certain standard, on one level or another. Curtains down.

Your statement about Africa are very myopic and very ignorant. You obviously know nothing about African people. Sorry, African people do not just wear animal prints this is the twenty first century. Millions of African men in business and in African societies wear western style clothing. You obviously know nothing about Africa. There are African businessmen that do wear suits and ties so your statement just demonstrates how ignorant you are. And there is nothing wrong with wearing suits and ties. And your claims about discussing how “Afrocentric” I am just proves your ignorance.

It doesn’t matter if Jay Manuel or Miss Jay don’t mind conforming to homophobic stereotypes. It bothers me and that’s why I wrote about it. The problem is that this is such a myopic image of gay black men in the media and society. Tyra Banks show is full of racist, sexist, misandrist, misogynst and homophobic stereotypes.

  14. El Xini's avatar
    El Xini says :

Well, there you have it, not only have YOU conformed to the Western ways of clothing, but as YOU put it yourself: “Millions of African men in business and in African societies wear western style clothing”. Also, I don’t recall mentioning anything about animal prints or whatnot, so don’t put words in my mouth… I’ve got plenty of my own, thanks. You are right about something, however: There’s NOTHING wrong with wearing suits and ties. Likewise, there’s nothing wrong with wearing colored contacts and hair extensions if one so chooses (albeit something I wouldn’t use myself). And could you please point out to me where in my comments I ever claimed to know anything about the country Africa, thank you.

I will say, however, that I agree that the media tends to show more of the effeminite side of homosexual males, black or white or whatever (like those 5 guys who used to have their own show). But maybe it’s because the non-stereotypical homosexuals prefer not to OUT themselves over broadcast. The stereoypes… they don’t really need outing, do they?

I would also appreciate it if you could explain to me what it means to you to act Black, and act White… I’m of mixed ancestry of Asia (China) and Europe (Spain), but growing up here in America, I’m pretty much convinced that I just act American. I have no clue where you are from (although, you’re text suggests to me that you’re from England or another English-speaking country other than America).

I’m not here to pick a fight; I don’t even know you… just as I don’t know TB. I’m only saying that there’s nothing wrong with conforming to the society among which one is living, so long as the conformation does not physically or psychologically hurt anyone else. Like I said, EVERYONE has conformed the their society on one level or another. Speaking English, for one, whether there’s a southern draw, or an East Coast tone, or whatever… it’s a form of conforming.

I think that Tyra is being misunderstood. I think that Tyra lives in reality. As far as the girls on americas next top model…what Tyra is saying is that it does not matter if you are black or white but that you have to present yourself a certain way to make it in this world today. White people can talk country too. I dont think that she was just singling out black people. Remeber Nina? Tyra did not tell her to talk like white people. Instead she embraced who she was as a person. You must be articulate when you speak. That is all that Tyra was saying. This article is very typical of black people. Instead of accepting that someone is giving them good advice they rather think that someone is trying to hurt them. We have fought so hard in life and still feel the need to fight. The worst part is that we fight and hate on one another….And yes i am black.

People don”t have to agree with me I am cognizant of this. I agree with you Aulelia people that are not black may not understand what I am trying to say. W.E.B. I believe Tyra was cruel to Danielle and her attitude was truculent.

Race is a social construction everyone knows this. However, if you live in the real world you know racism exists. Tyra’s talk show and America’s Next Top Model are both products that Tyra is selling to the white mainstream audience. Tyra Banks avoids race because she wants the white dollar. You see icky race issues don’t compute and work with the white upper middle class Tyra is trying to make her dough from.
I think it is deleterious the way Tyra treated Danielle, Bree, Nic, and all the other black girls on America’s Next Top Model. Tyra has an intense jealousy for darker skinned black women.

I disagree with your analysis that acting black sounds “uneducated” that definitely isn’t what blackness is about. Black people we believe in education I know I do. I do have a problem with black people such as Mammy Oprah and Tyra Banks that present this image they are “keeping it real” when all they care about is raking in the dough through white North America. My perspective is I think some black people want Tyra to acknowledge black culture. Yet Tyra prances around with her fake weaves, contact lenses, to look as Eurocentric as possible. Yet Tyra lies on television and tells black women and tells they are pretty the way they are. Black women are beautiful but Tyra like Beyonce, Halle Berry, Lil Kim and their front blonde weaves, or Mary J Blge and her blonde wigs all are attempting to look more Eurocentric as possible for commerical appeal and to make money. It is obvious to the discerning eye. I think it is pretty obvious that Tyra Banks and mammy Oprah are trying to appeal to a white female demographic audience because they want to make more money.

Ok… Now I Highly Disagree With your Statement….

You even said yourself that you are a gay man who does very heterosexual things and you also say that you have no knowledge of the fashion industry…. But Gay Men like Jay Manuel and J. Alexander Who are highly feminine Know Alot about the fashion industry which is the reason why tyra Banks Hired them in the first place…. Do you also think hey are dumb, I think they know that People sitting on the couch are going to make some very rude comments But they are obviously ok with the criticism if they keep doing what they do.. As said before a gun wasnt held up to their heads to take the job.

Yes Tyra banks did Complain Of Dani’s Accent And Did Tell her To Speak “Proper english”, But By Proper Tyra Did Not Mean “White” She Meant “Clear” Dani Spoke With An Accent That was very unclear, And the reason why tyra was complaining was because no one could understand what she was saying.

Yes, the judges did tell Kim to act more feminine but the reason why is the theme of the photo shoot was for the girls to be 40’s pin-up girls…. And 40’s pin-ups were what?… Feminine

SO WHAT! Who cares if tyra has gay men who are effeminate. Everyone is going to have a stereotype. That’s the truth no matter what. It’s human nature. The only thing that humans can change are our actions. The last thing the gay community needs is another gay person to hate on effeminate gay men. I understand that you’re trying to create this globalizing view that not all gay men are effeminate, and I agree with that. But you don’t have to paint gay men in such an effeminate way. People today are so caught up in not trying to act like a bigot, that they mistake public courtesy for misinformation. What’s wrong with having gay men who dress up as drag queens on the show? The truth is, most of the gay community does that. I should know, I live in San Francisco. So regardless of having butch or effeminate gay men, we should be happy that gay people are even getting exposure because no matter where we go, others are always going to have a stereotype about gay people. The only thing we can do is educate.

I see nothing but love and affection flowing from that woman for all races of girls everywhere and I look up to her. I think the industry is focused around a specific look and it’s a pitty that all people feel the need to be 6 feet tall, 110 pounds, with easily managed, flowing hair.

If Miss Jay were to act more ‘straight’ or less camp would you accuse Tyra Banks of pandering to the heterosexual market? I remember watching an episode on a talk show about a gay high school student who was told by school authorities not to act too gay so as not to attract attention to himself. It seems like you are doing the same thing.

It’s okay to be gay, but not too gay? And if you’re black you had better be really damn black? That seems like a double standard to me. Then again it’s nothing knew for lighter skinned black women to be outcasts in the black community. Furthermore, just because Tyra has green eyes, I don’t think it is reasonable to jump to the conclusion that they are contacts. There are plenty of black people with green eyes, are we going to accuse them all of being to white? Would Tyra have to wear brown contacts in order to show her true blackness? If so she would be faking nonetheless.

You know I only came here because I saw that gorgeous picture of Tyra and I was watching America’s Next Top Model at the time and was interested in finding pics of the famed woman, and then I read your article… I notice that you’re not responding to any of the other comments that people have made about your article, but that’s okay because I’m going to throw my own two cents in because I felt the need to comment. I understand where you’re coming from when it comes to the negative stereotyping that the media makes of Black Women and the GAY community in general (because it’s not entirely about the BLACK GAY MAN at all, but the GAY community with blacks being a segment within it). However, you quoted W.E.B Du Bois and spout off his wisdom in reference to the public and private way that blacks act around open society and behind closed doors around their peers and it seems that you are contradicting yourself by accusing Tyra of hating Black people because she doesn’t act or look a specific way in mainstream. But let’s remember shall we: MAINSTREAM is the public sphere, the public arena, and if what you say of Mr Du Bois is correct then she is acting in the way that is most befitting of the MAINSTREAM. Now, when she’s at home amongst friends, then she will act accodring to the private sphere of her home.

Let us all just realize one particular aspect about the United States’ culture (because you are obviously NOT from the US, but are American as one Canadian friend pointed out to me becaue you live on the American continent), only a few decades ago segregation was LAW in this country and only a few short centuries ago slavery was also LAW. The people who remember those times, while dying off, are still around and some are still in power and some teach their child a type of closeted bigotry, we as a race CANNOT expect change to just suddenly fall into our laps as if the past never existed at all. There are still kinks to work out and the majority that still has sway and power in the US is white America. So, until we are able to get a few Black presidents under out belts or create a brainwashing device to change everyone’s minds, change is going to happen slowly and Tyra Banks and any other Black Woman in power in the media is going to have to conform in some way. I personally feel that the modelling industry is FAKE and contains more drama than choosing the queen at a high school prom, but that’s the fashion industry and Black Woman have to be more cut throat about it than their white counterparts. So, if they must conform, then they must. At least they are out there, showing that there ARE black faces even if they aren’t the ones that black people want to see or represent the culture. I, myself, as a black woman growing up took great joy in even seeing Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks and Gabrielle Union (while not a model) in the media and other black faces as well. It gave me hope that if I ever wanted to pursue these careers, while it would be hard work and alot of pain, I could at least make it somewhere. So, while you may not like the ‘Eurocentric’ look Tyra has, at least she’s OUT there and providing a different stereotype for the media to play off on instead of the angry, overly sexualized ghetto stereotype of ‘I Love New York’ or ‘the Flavor of Love’ girls. Tell me how those women are helping the media percieve ME as an average WOMAN instead of some loud-mouthed, obnoxious, rude person.

As for the gay men: as one of the previous posters commented, isn’t it better that the gay culture is getting some exposure. While it may not be the best exposure, you are forgetting that this is the FASHION industry and most of the men in the FASHION industry, if they are not the designers and even those are dubious in sexuality, are GAY and usually effeminate. And Jay Manuel doesn’t seem to act like the comedic relief at ALL. Now, Miss Jay….yes, he acts…a bit comedic, but I have friends who are gay and lesbian of all races and act worse. He’s tame in comparison to what I’ve personally experienced (trust me, when you go to a party with lesbian lolitas in various types of lolita culture and styles…whew!). Now, Mr Jay may make YOU think he’s the stereotypical gay man, but I don’t see any of the more ‘malefic’ acting gay men pushing for themselves into the media and if they do, they don’t tell any one about it because they don’t want to be boxed in and forced to play specific roles. The acting world and fashion world are cut throat businesses where backstabbing is the norm and if someone finds out a specific aspect about your rpivate life, it WILL be used aginst you so that some else can get ahead and if you’re BLACK or an other minority, you’re doubly screwed.

So, before you bag on Tyra or, even, Oprah, you need to understand the sphere that you are taling about. I do because as a child I wanted to break into that industry and learned how hard it could be for a minority of color. I have always been told that I sound white, act white and even dress that way too. I was told by an aunt that one of her great aunt’s would have loved me merely because I was of a lighter skin color than my own mother. My younger brother has yellow skin and green eyes, does that make him any less black? Because I want him to pronounce words with out the vernacular that is associated with and plagues the black culture, does that make either one of us less black? Danielle, one of the ANTM’s models and the one who WON, had to learn to conform to an juggernaut of an industry and quite frankly, being black listening to her talk was painful to my ears too.

Well, I’ve spoken my piece. Thank you for reading if you do.

beyonce isn’t “white”. Sure she has some mixed blood but she’s black all the same.

as for tyra, sure she doesn’t use the black accent but that’s because she wants to show that shes flexible to any kind of people.

shes black but uses the caucasian accent to show that she’s on both sides of the “race”, same goes to Oprah.

just because someone doesn’t use their” accent” doesn’t mean their sell outs.

I think black people are the racists. They can’t stand to give white people credit for anything. Their hate is what needs to change. Not white people. We proved whe don’t need to hate blacks when we voted in a black president. Stop being so irrational and one sided and fooling yourselves that you can win by yelling over the people who speak the truth. Upper class, educated black people know what I mean. Before I give my opinion, I would like you all to know where I’m coming from. I’m a black gay male living in America. The main problem that I have with the post is that you seem to put people like Tyra and Oprah down for conforming to “white” standards but you’re solution is for them to conform to “black” standards. Point is that no matter how you look at it everyone conforms and I really don’t think It’s anyone’s place in life to judge people for that. So what, she has a hair weave…as does every other supermodel, even the white ones. The Danielle situation was more helpful than anything. Tyra made the valid point that in order to work in this industry and get jobs you have to speak clearly and your accent won’t sell as many products. No different than a postal service worker having to shave in order to stay employed or wearing business casual in a corporate setting. My honest opinion is I think the post was extremely racists and reinforced all the things that you unsuccessfully tried to combat. What do you say to the black kid who was adopted by white parents and grew up mainly around white people. Of course he’s going to adopt the habits and mannerisms of his surroundings. Is he white washed and fake? Would you have preferred him to research what it was to be black and act that way instead? Or would that be fake too?

This is probably some of the most ignorant information I’ve ever read. I don’t know who told you that “whiteness” was the only acceptable media image, but that is very wrong. Oh and by the way, while you are attacking Tyra calling her stereotypical. You are stereotyping white people with all of this talk about “whiteness”. Beyonce and Tyra are African AMERICANS. And here in America, there is a thing called style. And white people do not own that. Those 2 very powerful women have the right to dress and wear what they please and what makes them feel beautiful in order to love themselves. Which is the message they are sending out to younger women. And I don’t even know what you mean by “conform to the representation of whiteness” “Whiteness” is not a lifestyle, its a race. There is a huge difference. People need to GET OVER the whole black and white thing because its so trivial. At the end of the day Beyonce Knowles, Tyra Banks, and Oprah Winfrey worked extremely hard to get where they are today, and to even begin trying to measure their success on what “race” they act is ignorant. Knowledge, power, and beauty comes in all races, not just white.

“Darling, you are NOT black as you stated from your ancestry so why trouble yourself about something that does not concern your race? I can’t stand it when people try and meddle like this!”

Someone said that earlier and I think it just illustrates one of the main problems here: you keep generalizing race and marginalizing yourself. A non-black person commenting on a predominantly black issue shouldn’t be “meddling.” That is perpetuating racism by singling yourselves out and separating yourself from other races. I also agree that throwing around the term “whiteness” is offensive, and it is also racist. There should be an “acting white” or “acting black.” People should act the way that is comfortable to them. And I’m sorry but there is no such thing as talking white. There is only English- proper or otherwise. I am just as bother by a white person talking improperly (mispronouncing things and the like) with a very thick country accent as I am by a black person talking ebonics. Both of them sound uneducated.

I think the problem is that if a white person said things like this they would immediately be termed a racist, but there is a reverse racism going on here. You are putting race too high up on a pedestal, when the goal should be to knock that pedestal out and remove the boundaries. You can still be proud of your race without needing to marginalize yourself.

I know you wrote this article such a long time ago but really, why would you sit there and write such a long pointless article about how much you hate one person for what she does. Tyra has changed so many lives of people for the better but yet you choose to look past all of that and condemn her for what you think she should incorporate in her life. Who are you to go around insulting a billionaire who is obviously loved so much by society? Do you really think you can change people’s perspective with your ignorant article? Tyra does embrace her culture but just because she doesn’t incorporate it in her everyday life style does not mean she is a hypocrite. You mentioned earlier that Tyra was trying to correct Danielle’s speech by speaking proper, yet at the end of your long rant, you said that you find it improper for someone to speak ebonics. Wake up and realize that no one will want to buy anything from you on a global basis if you speak with that accent. Similiar to the “hillbilly-like” accent. They both don’t work.

There is nothing wrong with her wanting to use contact lenses of a different color. You do realize people of African descent wear contact lenses too, right. Maybe having “white people” hair is more manageable for the type of fashion that sells. If you’re going to condemn Tyra for the image she portrays then you might as well be hating the fashion industry.
You are looking for stereotypes that doesn’t even exist. I don’t event want to comment on all the ignorance you have portrayed here.
I am neither black nor white but I hear both sides of the story. Your post is extremely racist and is the epitome of reverse racism.
Why not open your eyes to both sides of the issue rather than just hating completely. You don’t want the show, fine. Millions of others do. Millions of other girls want to be on the show.
