Why is Halle Berry Complaining Again? She’s got it better than every other actress of colour in Hollywood?
I read an interview on Reuters website yesterday with Halle Berry. Once again, Berry is complaining about the struggles she still has with finding quality work. I was stunned and shocked. Berry has an Oscar, SAG awards, a Golden Globe, a Silver Bear, and an Emmy. She is also the “only” “black” female celebrity other than Beyonce that is always profiled in the mainstream media. If you need a translation let me be blunt. Berry and Beyonce right now are the only light skinned black women that have white features that are celebrated by white Hollywood. Berry and Beyonce’s success has as much to do with their talent but also with their Eurocentric appearances. If Berry was extremely dark, and didn’t have white features she simply wouldn’t be getting the film roles she gets right now.
Berry’s life is constantly in the news in the mainstream media and the black media. Halle Berry is a crossover actress. What about darker skinned black women? You know black women that actually look black? Where are they? Where are Angela Bassett’s leading lady roles? Where are Whoopi Goldberg’s leading lady roles?
Angela Bassett and Whoopi Goldberg in my mind are superior actresses to Halle Berry. Please go see “What’s Love Got To Do with It” or “The Color Purple” as proof. Where are Angela and Whoopi’s best actress Oscars? Whoopi managed to win an Oscar to her credit but Angela Bassett has not. And the question is why? Angela Bassett is beautiful and very talented but she doesn’t have the white features or light skin that mainstream North America and Hollywood favors. Halle Berry has the “right look” she’s making serious cash, she also is the “only” “black” actress that Hollywood considers bankable.
Now some people may think talking about pop culture isn’t important but I believe it is. Popular culture shapes, transmits, forms, and creates, messages through images. Movies aren’t just entertainment they are dialogues between the society and the viewing audience. What are the messages the movies really sending to the African Diaspora? What does it mean in the year 2007 that there is only “one” leading black actress in Hollywood and she’s over the age of 40? What does this say to younger black men and women that are actors or want to become actors?
Let me provide an example, lets say someone wanted to make a serious dramatic film about a famous black woman in history. The first person the studio executives would call is Halle Berry. It doesn’t matter that Berry does not look similar or have the range necessary for the role. In Hollywood Halle Berry would be “first choice” because they consider her the only true A list black actress. Now if Berry doesn’t want a role then the studios pass it over to Queen Latifah and if she doesn’t want it well it the role is up for grabs for all the other black women in Hollywood.
I am sure Halle Berry fans will rake me over the coals for saying this but why isn’t Berry more grateful? Why does she always utilize the same sales tactic to garner media attention for her films? Every time Halle Berry has to promote a movie Halle always plays the victim.Halle is at the top along with Denzel Washington and Will Smith lets call these three the trinity they are the top three black actors in Hollywood. I don’t hear Washington or Smith complain about how hard they got it every single time they are promoting a movie. Is there racism in Hollywood? Of course there is. Is it harder for Berry because she’s a black woman? Of course it is. I just find it derivative that she doesn’t even seem to realize how many opportunities she has compared to every single other actress of colour in Hollywood.
Does anyone care about Parminder Nagra? I do. I think Parminder Nagra is a talented young British actress. Parimnder was the star of “Bend It Like Beckham” yet the white British actress Keira Knightley her co star in the movie is now a major star. I am not going to knock Keira Knightley I mean its not her fault that Hollywood recognized her for her performance in “Bend It Like Beckham”. Keira Knightley has been in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, she is a rising star.
Where is Parminder? Oops I forgot? Parminder is on ER on NBC. Yes the star of “Bend It Like Beckham” you see on Prime Time television. Parminder is not white or light skinned so she isn’t going to be offered any big movie roles. You would of thought that Parminder proved she had an audience with her international hit movie. The attitude of Hollywood remains the same they favored Keira her costar over the real star of “Bend It Like Beckham”.
I am sure Pariminder is pleased she has a steady pay cheque working on a major American TV network. However, I think ER is limiting to Parminder’s talent and that’s just my personal opinion. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could see Parminder sink her teeth into a dramatic movie role?
Did you know Halle Berry’s next movie “Tulia” is about an Indian American woman Vanita Gupta! Last time I checked Halle Berry is not Indian American. Parminder isn’t Indian American either she’s a British South Asian woman. However, Parminder would make perfect sense for this role. Now why did the studios ignore Parminder for this role and pick Halle Berry? Parminder would of been perfect for the part!
Aishwariya Rai and Shilpa Shetty are attractive but I am not sure they are as talented as Parminder Nagra? Halle Berry does not have Indian heritage and its insulting that she’s taking this role. Yes Hollywood is about box office but what about having some cultural and racial sensitivity? Berry’s being hypocritical here she’s complaining about how bad she’s got it but she doesn’t have a problem taking a role meant for an South Asian or Indian American actress.
Here you have Halle Berry saying she has it so rough yet she doesn’t mind taking a role that was meant for another actress of colour. I don’t understand Halle Berry? I find Berry to be so pretentious. I am cognizant of the fact that the film industry is about making money and is profit driven.
I wonder what the other black women in Hollywood are thinking when they hear Halle Berry using this same pattern over and over again about how hard she’s got it? Halle Berry has so many fans especially in the black community a lot of black movie fans would become outraged if another famous black actress dared to speak out against her. However, I bet the other black women in Hollywood are even more frustrated then Halle Berry. Where is Angela Bassett these days? I believe Bassett is a superior actress to Halle Berry. When was the last time you saw Angela in a quality film that was a major success? When was the last time Angela Bassett had a leading lady role? Whoopi Goldberg is on television right now because the film roles simply aren’t there for her. I admire and respect both Whoopi and Angela because I believe they were the ones that really broke down the colour barrier in Hollywood in terms of making quality films.
In Halle Berry’s last film “Perfect Stranger” she had to once again exploit her sexuality to garner media attention. “Perfect Stranger” of course bombed at the North American box office grossing only $23 million dollars. I think Halle Berry should be counting her blessings that at least she has options and choices. At least Halle has a choice. Gabrielle Union and Sanaa Lathan I believe are just as beautiful as Berry but you see Sanaa and Gabrielle don’t have the “white” look. Sorry did I write that? I mean to say Sanaa and Gabrielle don’t have the “right” appearance to appear in major leading lady mainstream roles.
Its tiring and annoying that summer passed and there wasn’t one movie at the multiplex that I wanted to watch. I don’t only watch black movies I like watching good movies. I like character driven movies. However, it would nice not to have to wait until the “end” of the year to finally see some serious dramatic films with black actors.
Berry is promoting her new film “Things We Lost In A Fire” directed by the Danish woman Suzanne Bier. Bier is a well respected director and from what I have read the movie looks like its a comeback role for Berry. I really do hope this movie is a success for her. Berry said she had to “fight” for that role well at least she was “offered” an audition for that role. I doubt Gabrielle Union, Sanaa Lathan, or Kimberly Elise would be considered for that part.
I definitely agree with Halle Berry that an Oscar winning actress that is an A list star, shouldn’t have to “fight” for roles. Halle Berry is paid several million dollars per movie she’s the highest paid actress of colour in Hollywood. Berry is at the very top of the Hollywood ladder then other respected women of colour in entertainment around her age such as Jennifer Lopez, Queen Latifah, and Lucy Liu. What about Asian women or South Asian women or hispanic women in Hollywood? Other women of colour got it much harder then Halle Berry. Yet I don’t hear Jennifer Lopez, or Lucy Liu, or Queen Latifah complain about how hard they got it? And I think other black, South Asian, hispanic, and East Asian actresses would have more valid arguments about the entrenched racism and sexism they encounter. Where is Parminder Nagra’s big movie role?
Where is Sandra Oh’s Oscar? Sandra Oh is on Grey’s Anatomy and that is a big deal. Grey’s Anatomy is one the top shows on television and Sandra has won a Golden Globe award and a SAG award. Sandra has been recognized by Hollywood for all her hard work. However, when was the last time you saw an Asian Canadian or Asian American woman the main star of a studio film? Where are Sandra’s leading lady roles? Sandra has often been in “secondary” roles in motion pictures such as the film “Sideways” or she’s either the white girl’s best friend or somebody’s “friend” but never the main star. At least Halle Berry gets to be the “star” of her movies.
Has anyone ever heard of Rachel Crawford? Rachel Crawford is a very talented black Canadian actress she was in the lesbian film “When Night Is Falling” twelve years ago in 1995. Rachel is a solid actress she’s has had work on Canadian and American television. Where is Rachel’s Emmy?
Now Berry, Latifiah, Lopez, and Liu are the top four women of colour working in Hollywood today. If Halle Berry has it so bad what about people like Parminder Nagra, Sandra Oh, Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, and even the women of colour below them? How must they feel when they read Halle Berry complaining about how hard she’s got it?
Berry not only gets top salary, endorsements, international fame, leading lady roles, magazine covers, TV show interviews, always a guest on Oprah. Wow how hard does Halle Berry got it? It must be so hard cashing multi millon dollar cheques and being the “only” leading black lady in Hollywood.
Last time I checked Queen Latifah is stuck in mammy roles such as “Hairspray” as Motormouth Mable due to her size. Latifah only had one serious dramatic role this year Life Support but it was a TV film on HBO. Union can’t seem to get anything outside of the black romantic comedy genre, Washington is still in secondary roles in films such as “The Fantastic Four” or smaller films such as “The Dead Girl” and Liu is on TV. I am not trying to downplay the frustration Halle Berry has when she says she has to “fight” for movie roles because I am sure she does. I am a bit cynical and a bit irritated whenever she has a movie to promote she complains about how hard she’s got it. Halle has endorsements with Versace, Revlon, and numerous other companies she’s an international superstar. Meanwhile, Kimberly Elise was fired from the CBS show “Close to Home” last season she no longer will the the white girl’s “best friend” this season. I think Elise is a better actress then Berry but Elise doesn’t have “the look.” Elise has even said this in media reports in interviews with Ebony magazine and NPR and other outlets.
Another thing I have noticed is how racially segregated the movies still are. Why is it a black actor has to be in a film with a white actor in order for the film to have critical acclaim? Has anyone else noticed this disturbing pattern? Tyler Perry has a movie out this weekend “Why Did I Get Married?” Perry’s film was not screened for critics because he did not like how the critics bashed his first film “Diary of a mad black woman.” “Why Did I Get Married?” is also the only movie out this weekend with an all black cast but its considered a “romantic comedy.” Is Tyler Perry all we got?
Now Tyler Perry has a right to make the films he wants to make because he is his own artist. Every single artist has a right to his or her’s own artistic vision. I just find Perry’s movies didactic, boring, and not stimulating. Now this is my personal opinion. Also, the black community is not a monolithic group. Just because I don’t find Perry’s movies interesting doesn’t mean other black people agree with me. There should be a place for Tyler Perry’s films we all need to a good laugh at the theatre sometime. My complaint is Tyler Perry at the moment appears to be the “only” black filmmaker at the moment that has clout with the mainstream studios. And I see this as a quandary. I believe there just needs to be more diversity.
In the month of October 2007 only two movies will be theatres that have blacks in leading roles and that’s it. Of course black movie goers can see other films because its our choice. However, why are our choices so limited? I am drawn to black films because I want to see movies about the black experience on the screen. My complaint is the lack of quality choices to choose from.

Because movie goers that are totally fantasy that look nothing like reality.
Top Grossing Films: Titantic (“real”) the rest are Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Spider Man, Shrek and the ilk.
Soon we will wonder where all the people went – all having been replaced by CGI.
i believe halle berry is right complaining, i think this article misses the fact that just because halle has it better than other black actresses that she cant complain! once that door of credibility and acceptance is opened then more and more black actresses will get the chance to shine eg. union, lathan etc. halle should be celebrated for always pushing and striving for the top, because she may have won a ton of awards but it doesnt mean she’ll get a top role, in comparing to someone like julia roberts!! i mean come on halle is prettier and can act just as good or even better but her so called white features arent doing her any favours! racism still exists and no matter how we criticise and wine, i think we’ve got a long way to go, thats why i applaud halle for standing up for her rights but also for every coloured persons right!
Vince I am cognizant that Halle has endured a lot of racism and sexism in her career. My personal opinion is Halle Berry always plays the victim its always the world against Halle in her eyes. I don’t think Halle Berry cares about other black women in Hollywood. I think Halle loves the status of being the “only” leading lady that’s “black” in Hollywood. Everytime Halle Berry has to promote a movie she’s always playing the victim in a way for the public to have sympathy or feel sorry for her. I think its tired on Halle’s part to try these gimmicks to sell her movies.
Halle Berry is the only “A” list black actress in Hollywood right now and I think that’s a problem. Why is there only one black woman at the top? Where are Gabrielle Union’s leading lady roles? You do realize that Gabrielle Union, Sanaa Lathan, Vivica A Fox, Kimberly Elise, are also “competing” with Berry for roles. Hollywood will look over other talented black actresses for movie roles and go to Berry first. Halle always gets first choice for movies over other black women. Why can only “one” black woman be “A” list? I agree that Halle Berry has worked very hard to break down barriers but I don’t see Angela Bassett complaining and she’s got it much harder then Berry. Angela Bassett is slightly older then Berry and she’s also a darker skinned black woman. Angela Bassett should of won the Oscar for “What’s Love Got To Do With It”. Whoopi Goldberg is also a very talented black actress and now she’s on TV because there are no film roles for her either.
Halle Berry is an international superstar with multi million dollar endosements yes she has struggles but she’s also accomplished so much. I do find it a bit irritating to hear a multi millionaire the only “black” woman to ever win best actress Oscar complain about not getting big roles. Maybe if Halle didn’t choose movie roles like Catwoman or Perfect Stranger maybe just maybe things would be better for her? Nobody told Halle Berry to be in Catwoman that was her choice.
And what about the younger black women in Hollywood such as Gabrielle Union and Sanaa Lathan? Gabrielle Union has an amazing film “Neo Ned” that everyone should see but for some reason “Neo Ned” still hasn’t been released yet due to distribution problems. Sanaa Lathan hasn’t worked in over a year. Sanaa Lathan is an excellent actress. Kimberly Elise is also very talented. Elise has talked in the media about the fact she doesn’t get more roles because she doesn’t have the “white look” that Hollywood prefers. She’s just as attractive and talented as Halle but Sanaa doesn’t have white features and she’s not celebrated by white Hollywood like Halle Berry is. Also, you don’t even point out Halle is going to star in the movie “Tulia” that is about an Indian American woman Vanita Gupta. Now why is Halle Berry taking this role? Isn’t Berry being kind of hypocritical here? Here is Berry complaining about how hard she’s got it but she doesn’t seem to mind taking a role in “Tulia” that should be for an actress of colour that is of Indian heritage. I understand Hollywood is a business and they need star power for their films but there are talented actresses of Indian heritage I think would be better for the role in “Tulia” then Halle Berry.
Whoopi is great, but let’s be honest. As far as looks she simply is not in the same league as Angela Bassett or Halle. That is why she doesn’t get female leads. Black, white or blue, if you’re not attractive as a woman you are consigned to playing the attractive woman’s funny sidekick. But in general I agree with your rant. Why aren’t more dark, black women in the media? What about Kelly Rowlands, a very beautiful dark-skinned woman. What about Lauren Hill? Gabrielle Union is dark and lovely, but she doesn’t get as many parts as she could. I’ve also noticed that a star vehicle with a black male actor the leading lady role often falls to a non-black woman. A lot of times it’s Eva Mendez! WTF is up with that? She’s played opposite Will Smith, Ice-Cube, and Denzel. Could you image that happening with a white male star? These casting directors could easily pull in an attractive darker black female to play alongside a white guy or a black guy, but they never do. The message I get is that black women of a darker complexion are not considered beautiful. Yet, ironically, many black supermodels are dark-skinned. I’d like to know in whose crazy, mixed up mind is this woman ugly. I bet you any kind of money, if she was light, with a hair weave people would ve raving about how hot she was. But when she first hit the scene, her dark skin and short hair got her pegged as ugly.

I so agree with you…I love Halle and all…but think that (particularly) Angela Bassett is a better actress than she and doesn’t have the awards or movie roles to show for it…Halle does have a valid argument, but I think she needs to realize that the problem is not hers alone; the problem applies to all black actresses in Hollywood…
Peace and blessings…
When I see Halle Berry complaining about how hard she’s got it making $14 million per movie its just so insulting to all the other black women and other women of colour in Hollywood. Halle comes across as selfish. It just seems to me Halle only cares about Halle. She’s upset because she isn’t top choice as the other A list white actresses in Hollywood. However, Halle still has a wide range of choices for work. Sanaa Lathan is going to star in a new movie her first in over a year. Gabrielle Union is still stuck in the romantic comedy genre and I pray Neo Ned will be released soon. Neo Ned is such a good movie.
I will admit that Whoopi isn’t considered “pretty” by Hollywood standards but she’s not a bad looking woman and she’s a solid actress. Halle Berry and Beyonce are the kind of “image” the mainstream media presents as “black beauty.” Beyonce and Halle are both lighter skinned black women of mixed race ancestry. Yes Beyonce’s father is black but her mother is creole and mixed. Halle is a good actress but if she was dark she would never of won that Oscar.
I respect Whoopi Goldberg because she has overcome so much just like Halle and she has maintained her dignity. Ditto for Angela Bassett. Angela Bassett was offered that role in Monster’s Ball but she turned it down. It seems to me Halle Berry just cares about herself.
Hollywood is a business and the ideology is to “reach” the largest audience possible and that means reaching a white demographic. Its the reason Halle Berry is always in IR films for the past five years.
I think Sanaa Lathan is already challenging Halle Berry. Sanaa is also trying to become a leading lady I notice Sanaa is always the lead in her films. Sanaa will be in another IR film called “A Wonderful World.” I wish Gabrielle Union got bigger roles.
Halle for all her whining and crying for sympathy in interviews “CAN’T SELL MOVIE TICKETS” . The movies she has which feature her the lead in promos, have been disasterous. Perfect Stranger with Bruce Willis was a dud. Her new movie Things We id..Whateverrrrrr, was a disaster, not even making 1million on opening. Now we see the Tyler Perry movie Why Did I get Married, take the No1 spot at the Box Office. Tyler Perry has a movie of black actresses, we hardly ever get to see work , yet here they are in living color and selling tickets, becoming the Number 1 movie in America. Tyler Perry beat out George Clooney. Tyler Perry beat out Halle Berry, whose movie made a dismal $500thousand on it’s opening day. Halle can’t blame it on race that her movie failed so bady at the box-office, because there was also another movie with black actresses that made Money. Halle is what I always suspected a pretty lady(who many people really didn’t know was of mixed race, until she told us, then she NEVER stopped telling us..anyway (Beyonce looks more mixed)…but Halle had to let the world know “I’m mixed everybody, I’m not one of them regular-folk, so Hollywood opened the door and gave her some movies with white men, but she had to get “naeeccked” as my old grandma used to say. She got naked, Hollywood gave her an Academy Award, basically I feel which was a part talent award-part-guilt-trip award- part if we have to give it to one black woman give it to Halle, we know she’s mixed and she did take her clothes off for us to see it. Halle STILL CAN’T SELL TICKETS on her Acting, people did not go to her movie this weekend, they chose Vampires and they went back again to see Tyler Perry. Halle came in 15th, that’s really bad. I never got what was the big deal with this woman. She cries about being mixed, hell half of black Hollywood in mixed. They try to get work, they don’t dwell on it.
Saana Nathan is mixed, do we ever hear her crying. I think she’s more talented too.
I do agree that Halle Berry does “play” with race and uses it as a marketing tactic to sell tickets she definitely plays the victim all the time. In the past I had sympathy for her but now I can see its clearly a marketing tactic Berry is using to exploit the sympathy of the film audience. Sanaa Lathan is beautiful and very talented but you don’t hear Sanaa whine and complain like Halle Berry does. Halle Berry always has something to complain about. Both of Sanaa’s parents are black people. Halle always plays the victim she comes across as very narcisistic in her interviews. I don’t see Angela Bassett whine and complain and she’s a much better actress then Halle Berry! Angela Bassett is struggling to find good roles and she should be a bigger star. And what about Whoopi Goldberg! What about her?Whoopi isn’t getting roles. Yet here is Halle Berry Ms. $14 million dollar pay cheque complaning about how hard she’s got it she’s so irritating these days.
I think its pathetic how this very rich, attractive woman that has the world on a silver platter whines about how hard she’s got it. I just find that to be very annoying and pathetic. Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union, got it so much tougher then Berry because they actually are “black” not “mixed race” women. Sanaa and Gabrielle really have to “fight” for roles because Berry always is first choice for movies when it comes to women of colour in Hollywood.
“Things We Lost In A Fire” SHOULD of had a limited release. The strategy was all wrong. First, the movie was released too soon. Its the month of Halloween not for serious Oscar films. The movie was released on just over 1000 screens according to box office mojo but I think it should been much smaller opening on a lower amount of screens. Also the movie was released TOO SOON they should of waited until November. The movie is getting good reviews though. I think Halle needs to go away for a while and since she’s pregnant she needs to vanish and take a break.
Well to be fair Nicole Kidman’s movies are bombing as well. Remember Kidman’s movie “Invasion” released this summer? Invasion bombed big time and it had a very big budget. Stepford Wives bombed, Bewitched bombed too. It isn’t just Halle Berry. Jodie Foster’s movie “The Brave One” also bombed. I think Hollywood isn’t writing good scripts for women I think that’s the bigger issue. I think an even more important issue is the lack of quality roles for women of colour. Why can’t more black, Asian, or Hispanic ladies get leading roles? Why do all the leading lady roles for black women always have to go to Halle Berry first? And why is Berry in so many IR movies? I think Berry is turning off the black audience with these IR films.
Halle has always tried to sell herself on America by using the “I’m mixed card”, I think what blacks don’t realise is, she always feels she has to tell the world she is mixed, so what, it’s tiring and it’s boring, it still doesn’t help her sell movie tickets. Did Lisa Bonet,Mariah,Beyonce,Sally Richardson,,Jennifer Beals,Boris Kodjoe,Rick Fox,Dave Justice,Lola Falana,Lonetta Mcgee, Sammy Davis Jr.,Pam Grier on and on and on……………..Keep telling us how they were mixed with something and whine about who they were, etc………Halle needs to get over herself, she’ keeps bringing up race , I feel as a way to play the old “in house” to “field worker” old stereotype. She is letting black americans know, hey I’m really not one of you and letting white euro americans know, I’m not really completely one of them…it’s rather complex the game she has played over the years, so well that many can’t see what is going on here. Anyone ever read the book “Our kind of People”, you’ll see the game she is playing. I think she knows what she is doing and it has helped her in her career, to go further and farther than many, she has used her racial mix for a sympathy vote, but It’s lame and tiring, yes she’s talented, but there are more talented. She’s pretty but there are equally beautiful or more beautiful. Sadly she can’t seem to get either audience into the movie theatres these days. Maybe the gig is up.
Mariah yes discussed her race in the early days, but people can see she is racially mixed, so she probably oesn’t feel the need to explain anymore.

Sammy Davis never mentioned it but he was half Puerto Rican. Yes he was , just look up his history, the same for Lola Falana, old 70’s actress-singer. Pam Grier also another lady with some mixed heritage, have you ever heard her say a word on it NO.
Halle needs to give up the race card she constantly uses, it’s not helping her sell tickets these days.
(Sammy Davis)Davis was born in the run down neighborhood of Harlem to Elvera Sanchez, a Cuban and Sammy Davis, Sr., an African-American entertainer. The couple were both dancers in vaudeville. As an infant, he was raised by his paternal grandmother. When he was three years old, his parents split up. Wikipedia
Halle needs to get over herself…..really. Because there have been ethnically mixed entertainers in Hollywood since the beginning of time. She seems to feel it’s some new thing for Hollywood.
Wow you really broke it down. You are definitely on point about Halle Berry she definitely plays with race. I think you got a point about Halle she is so annoying these days always complaining about how hard she has it and she is a multi millionaire. Its like girlfriend get a clue. The only reason Hollywood made Berry “A List” is not just because of her talent but also because Halle has a Eurocentric appearance they consider palatable. Halle still fits into white North America’s perceptions of what is considered beautiful. Halle Berry has the “right image” of what Hollywood believes “black beauty” is. What about darker skinned black women? Can’t darker skinned black women be beautiful too?
I have never felt an ounce of authenticity from Halle when she speaks about anything. Her words seem all motivated towards letting America know she’s mixed and getting America to feel sorry for her,so please move me further up the ladder, it was even prevelant in her Oscar speech, but there she was suddenly representing herself as an African American actress, oh yeah, she wanted to be the first. When she goes on Talked shows or in magazines it’a always I’m mixed..white America, so I’m okay. I think she’s always played a game with black americans more so than white america. Which is why I think people don’t go see her like they do with Denzel movies, or Tyler Perry movies. People can tell if someone is full of bull.
The color of the leading man versus the woman is actually the issue here. The woman is always the “fairer sex”. Black men don’t have as much as a problem because “tall, dark, and handsome” applies to the them just as much as it does to white men. So the leading lady is almost always going to be fair skinned opposite a dark-skinned man. So Gabrielle Union and Angela Bassett are of the list if Will Smith or Michael Ealy are playing the lead man. If you notice, Smith and Ealy don’t get as many roles as their darker-skinned counterparts Denzel Washington (though he is technically Hollywood royalty) and Eddie Murphy, and most of the black men who have been nominated for awards are darker than the women who have gotten them. It’s crazy but true.
Ada, Will Smith is a major superstar he’s the most successful black actor ever. I believe Newsweek magazine this year even said Smith is more successful in terms of box office then Washington. I do see your point about the skin tone. Hollywood does not want to pair Washington or Smith with darker skinned black women because that would make it a “black film”. And the ideology is “white Americans” will not watch a “black film”. Why doesn’t Hollywood think about the black audience? Don’t they think we want to see black A list stars with other big black stars? I would love to see Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Kerry Washington, Vivica A Fox or Gabrielle Union with Will Smith in a movie again. I wonder is this theory true? Even Will Smith acknowledged this theory does exist in Hollywood when he was promoting his interracial comedy Hitch. Sure enough the white actress Eva Mendes was his love interest and it was a hit. Yeah Mendes is Cuban American but she’s still white but not “white” American. Don’t people know that there are whites that are decendants of the Spaniards that still live in Cuba? Spaniards and the Portugese are also Europeans. I guess in the eyes of white America Mendes is considered “acceptable”. I’ve noticed that Smith and Washington are consistently paired with white Latinas to make their movies palatable to the prejudices of white American audiences.
Sorry but Eva Mendez is not white, she is cuban and for Black and Hispanics who don’t know, THE SLAVES(from AFRICA) were dropped off in the Caribbean Islands first, which is why Puerto Ricans, Cubans, etc have such dark skin, they all have African blood running through their family trees, most learned the benefits of hiding it once crossing the waters into the USA generations ago. Eva herself said Hollywood told her “We will either cast you with black actors or in comedies where there are people of color because you ar e “TOO DARK”(Eva Mendez) to play opposite white actors. Why do you think MOST Hispanic actresses, piggyback their Early careers off of Black actors, because they are not considered White by Hollywood or America, really(except for Cameron Diaz). They must cross over through the black audiences or black actors , which is why JLO happily did In Living Color(when looking for a break) I thought she was just a mixed or lighter skin black woman when she did the movie with Wesley Snipes. Look at Eva she made ot off of Denzel and Will Smith, but she has said she still has trouble getting cast in a movie with a white male lead, but it doesn’t bother her at all. Andy Garcia used to play Italian roles, in the early days of his career. Eva Longoria was on Young and the Restless playing a mixed girl early on, opposite the Shemar and the other black actor. Spanish actress mostly make it through the black casting system early on, then when they make it, they suddenly become Latin. Salma Hayek is one that made it on her own credits but still she was cast with Antonia Banderas, who still has a bit of trouble getting cast with white actresses. I think it would be great if the Black and Hispanic actors stuck together after making it big and not leave their early affiliations behind. It is just a opinion but it does seem black men choose light skin, mixed women for everything when they cast their videos, movies, ads for thier fashion wear companies, everything. A agent told me that once….She was a top agent in NY and she said ..”We send the type of women that the casting office request, and the request comes from the acotr or singer themselves usually….she said they say.. Send me pretty light skinned, mixed, or spanish ladies too. I said “oh”.
It’s sad, but after JLO made it, she suddenly became Latino…I swear I thought she was half black, half white or half spanish for the longest time. Both Eva ‘s made no bones about what they are and I respect them a lot more, I can’t blame them for taking the jobs a black actor might give them, they want to work. The funny one was C Zeta-Jone, I use to read she was Spanish when she first came to the US, but once when they wanted to cast her in a movie with Will Smith early on,I started reading she said she was English and she then married old Hollywood, doors opened for her, (still she does play Spanish ladies a lot) I think Rosie Perez has the same problem as Angela Bassette or Gabriel Union, Rosie is considered too ethnic to play a lot of roles, not sure why because all of these ladies are beautiful.
Black cast movies are box office though as we see with Tyler Perry.
Hello Aisha thanks for your comment you make some excellent points about the casting of Latina women in Hollywood. Remember Cuban is not a race it is a nationality. Eva Mendes may not be considered “white” in America but in other parts of the world she would be viewed as a white woman. United States is the only country I can think of where Spaniards such as Antonio Banderas wouldn’t be immediately thought of as white. Anywhere else in the world Banderas is indeed a white man he is a European born and raised in Spain. There are white Cubans and also Black Cubans. Andy Garcia is indeed a white man. Antonio Banderas is a white man he is a Spaniard from Spain. Last time I checked Spain is a part of the European Union.
You missed one very important point, the Cuban and Puerto Rican races are a mixed blend of races, from the indegenious Indians on the Island and the (African)Slaves dropped off in the thousands and thousands, during the 1600’s,1700’s,1800’s…the Caribbean races are a mixture of African blood,Indian and Spanish that were sent there by Queen Isabella of Spain, who sent Columbus on his journey to the America’s. If you see old hollywood during the 1940’s,1950’s, the black and caribbean communities blended together in entertainment, the Mambo Kings, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, there was no dividing of the cultures. In fact Dezi Arnaz and Lucy recieved hate mail for years when their show was on, because America viewed them as a mixed couple, I heard a former friend of Lucy and Dezi talking about the hate mail for them being a mixed couple, he said people forget that these days. The Latin community did not discuss their family lineage once they crossed the ocean into Miami or up to NY, they saw that predjudice awaited them, if they lived in blended cultures and races the way they had on their Islands. I agree Antonio Banderas is of European Spanish blood which is different, but still he is not viewed as white in America (not too many movies with white women, you’ll notice, unless the woman is playing a Spanish woman, ala Catherien-Zeta-Jones)and neither is brown Eva Mendez, not in America she’ll never be white and unless you see their family photos, you may never know exactly how much African they have in them. Cuban like Puerto Rican is a blend of races of people who settled on those Islands, there is no such thing as a Puerto Rican in Race, it is a Country, there is no such thing as a Cuban in Race it is a country, which is why you will see Hispanic written on race. Once I remember at the the doctor a patient wrote “Cuban” , the doctor said, dear that his your nationality, but what is your race, black , white or hispanic or other, please write one.
Eva Mendez and JLO had to come up through the ranks through black movies, it’s just a fact, only blonde haired, blue eyed Cameron Diaz was able to go immediately to white movies, because of her coloring.
Black Americans are not all black for the most part they are of mulaato mixtures, if their family came from anywhere in the south. Slaves having children by Slave owners was a common pratice. People do not even know that WE BDubouis was half black and half white, Louis Farrakon is from a half white mother, Fredrick Douglas was mixed. Black Americans immediately scream black, but do not even understand their own unique history and how rich it is and one to be proud of. Halle Berry being half white is not a big deal, most of black America has European blood running through them, it’s just a fact. Eva Mendez is not white and said Hollywood told her, You are too dark to work with white actors, she took roles initially with Will and Denzel, she loves working with these actors. I remember one very big Hollywwod agent, told me a very famous Hispanic Actress was actually half black, but she hides it, because she did not want to be typecast in black catagory forever. I was shocked, but she is very famous. The world just believes she is just Spanish now and forever more.
Hello Aisha you definitely have a point that America views race differently then the rest of the world. I do notice that Eva Mendes and Jennifer Lopez both started out in black films and then crossed over to mainstream Hollywood. Just curious could you provide a hint about the Spanish actor that is hiding her black heritage?
Noooooooooo. There are many things these people keep away from the public for image.
Not the obvious is all I will say.
