Can Roger Federer Win The French Open? Is Rafael Nadal on steroids?

It is so frustrating for the past three years to see Swiss tennis god Roger Federer dominate everyone else on the ATP Tour except Rafael Nadal. Roger has won 3 out of the 4 grand slams three times in his career in 2004, 2006, and also this year. Let me put this in perspective, in the Open era in men’s tennis only one man Mats Wilander in 1988 was able to win three out of the four slams in one year. Wilander only accomplished this incredible achievement once. Roger has now done it three times. Roger makes the extraordinary seem ordinary. Roger has dominated men’s tennis better than anybody in the history of the game.

Yet Nadal has a 8-5 edge overall and a 6-1 edge on the clay courts. Roger has lost to Nadal the last three years at the French Open. Every single year on the clay courts Nadal dominates Federer but finally this year Roger beat Nadal on clay at the Hamburg Masters event in Germany.

However, the clay courts in Germany as any tennis fan knows is much slower than the clay in Paris, Monte Carlo, or Rome. The clay is also heavier in Germany. It is time for Roger to win the French Open I hope he does it next year. Roger simply must become the greatest male tennis player of all time and the only way he’s going to do it is if he wins the French Open. If Roger does not win the French Open then he cannot become the undisputed greatest male tennis champion that ever lived.

Again, at this year’s French Open it was so shocking the very few break point opportunities Roger converted. Roger’s inability to break Rafael’s serve enough cost him the match. I don’t think Nadal did anything spectacular in this year’s French Open final he just allowed Roger to self destruct. I think that was the key to the match. Roger’s forehand failed him he didn’t come to net enough.

Also, I question why didn’t Roger try looping the ball more I don’t know hit some moon balls or something? Roger also didn’t use the strategy he used to perfection in Hamburg and that was hitting the ball wide to Nadal’s forehand to force him into a defensive position. Roger didn’t chip and charge either. Roger was trying to use his forehand to force the issue against Nadal but he grew too impatient. And that’s how Nadal beats Roger he forces him into errors. Nadal is the male version of Arantxa Sanchez Vicario he simply doesn’t make unforced errors and he always gets a lot of balls back. Just like Arantxa Sanchez Vicario frustrated Steffi Graf and Monica Seles on the clay, Nadal is doing the exact same thing to Federer.

The key for Roger is, he’s going to have to master controlled aggression. Why not hit some slice backhands low to Nadal’s forehand and chip and charge to the net. I’m not saying Roger should come to the net all the time of course because Nadal passes very well. I am saying when Roger sees a floating ball he must have the courage to come to net and knock off the winning shot. It is the only way he’s going to beat Nadal on clay. Roger has to rob Nadal and take away the time for him to set up his shots. Roger also has to attack Nadal’s forehand.

Roger’s only twenty six, he’s got some time but he’s got to hurry. It seems to me Roger gets tired on the clay even though he’s in amazing physical shape. Yet Nadal never ever seems to get tired. And this is what I question Nadal’s incredible ability to never get tired in long clay matches. Is Nadal human? Or is Nadal doing something sinister like Argentine player Mariano Puerta did at the 2005 French Open? Puerta got caught using steroids and he has since been banned from the ATP Tour. Marion Jones the queen of Track and Field she also denied using steroids yet was forced to admit the truth yesterday. Jones was on “the clear” which is a designer steroid that is undetectable. Could Nadal be on “the clear” is this the reason why Nadal has incredible endurance and an insatiable ability to play on clay for hours and hours and hours?

Another issue, that is both perplexing and annoying is that fact Rafael does not have a big serve yet he doesn’t seem to get his serve broken often. Roger and the other top players simply aren’t attacking Nadal’s second serve enough. You would think a big strong muscular man like Rafael Nadal would have a huge serve. Nadal’s serve is deceptive it doesn’t look like its good but he gets a lot of kick and spin on his serve. However, the serve is clearly the most attackable part of Nadal’s game he just spins it in and he doesn’t generate a lot of aces.

Everybody knows that whenever Rafael Nadal plays Roger Federer he always hits the serve to Roger’s backhand. In the Wimbledon final this year, Roger finally figured it out and started to hit some offensive forehands. I also believe Roger can go to the net more against Rafael he needs to mix it up more against him.

Now there is a third guy the media is talking about the Serbian player Novak Djokovic. I am not convinced that Djokovic is at the level of Federer and Nadal in my mind he has to win a grand slam first before he can be considered at their level. However, I will concede that Djokovic is higher and better then the American men Andy Roddick and James Blake that’s for sure. Djokovic beat Roddick, Nadal, and Federer, back to back to back at the Montreal Masters event and that was an incredible achievement. Djokovic is also ranked number three in the world and he could potentially pass Nadal in the rankings at the end of the year it is mathematically possible.

I’ve said this for the last couple of years but I think Rafael Nadal could be on steroids. Could Rafael Nadal be on the clear? I mean look at Marion Jones she was adamant that she never used any steroids and yet she confessed today that she is a cheater. Nadal seems to have incredible endurance and on the clay that’s very important. Even at Wimbledon this year, Nadal never ever seems to get tired and I find that strange. How is this possible? Okay, yes Nadal is young right now but still I think he could be on something. I mean just look at him he’s 21 now but even when Nadal was just 19 years old when he won his first French Open he was so super muscular and strong.

Now Roger Federer he’s a man of class, grace, style, and he’s an incredible champion. Roger now has twelve grand slam titles he no longer really has any rivals he’s chasing history and to shatter Pete Sampras 14 grand slam record. Sampras may have 14 grand slam singles titles but he was a horrible clay court player. Sampras was lazy when it came to improving on the clay he just never gave 110% effort on this surface. I also think its a major fabrication of the USA media to suggest that Sampras is the undisputed no.1 player of all time. Let’s take a closer look at Sampras career he lost a lot in first and second rounds for a no.1 player. Sampras also in my mind not consistent enough all around. I think Borg is in some ways superior to Sampras. Borg reached four US OPEN finals no he didn’t win any but he did reach the finals of the US OPEN four times. Borg also won Wimbledon five years in a row it was a record that wasn’t equaled until Roger Federer achieved that this year. Pete Sampras never won Wimbledon five years in a row.

Nobody thought anyone could pass Sampras all time male grand slam singles champion record but Roger Federer can. Roger is now in second place overall with 12 grand slam singles titles. I believe Roger is the superior player to Pete Sampras.

I also notice the xenophobic comments of the American tennis commentators like Mary Carillo, John McEnroe and especially the ingrate Patrick McEnroe is ignored. Both the insipid McEnroe brothers and the termagant Mary Carillo don’t really like Roger Federer’s incredible domination of men’s tennis. Roger is the best European male tennis player ever he’s passed Borg this year. Roger has the longest number one record for any tennis player male or female ever.

Since I live in Canada unfortunately I get American feed from TSN the sports network in Canada and I have to listen to both the McEnroe brothers praise Andy Roddick and that loser James Blake. I sure hope Roger can smash Sampras record soon and become the greatest player of all time. However, in order for Roger to be the greatest he must win the French Open.

Sampras never won the French Open either. That always bothers me when people (John McEnroe) say he’s the greatest. Agassi may have won fewer slams, but he won all four at least once. I think that should be a requirement for the ‘greatest of all time’ tag. As for Nadal on steroids – I would like to think he isn’t since he had success at such a young age. When you win at 19 why would you think you need an extra edge? Time will tell on that. But it is interesting that Nadal is showing signs of wear with his recent injuries. It might be that he isn’t on steroids and all of his workouts are now catching up to him.

Have you ever played on clay? I did last summer and it was real eye opener. Hard court movement doesn’t always translate well. Nadal is a master at sliding and moving on clay. He doesn’t get tired because he moves well and the sliding gets rid of all the wear and tear of a hard court where sudden stops but an enormous strain on his body. If he really didn’t get tired he would not break down every time he plays on hard courts. He just knows how to move on clay. It is also a lot easier to play three hours on clay.

It is possible that Federer gets caught in between Djokovic and Nadal. Unable to dominate Djokovic on fast courts and unable to dominate Nadal on clay courts. But I agree with you about Djokovic. I know he is young and played his first grand slam final but he should have taken at least one set from Federer. My only question is whether he will be able to win the big one when the pressure is on. Only time will tell. Had Nadal been in the same situation as Djokovic the final would have gone to five sets.

Federer has already accomplished so much. I don’t think there is any question that he will be considered among the best ever. Federer is also a much better clay court player than Pete ever was. But as long as Nadal is healthy and facing Federer at Roland Garros, I think you can pretty much forget about him winning the French title. More intriguing is whether Nadal will beat him at Wimbledon. Things can turn so quickly in tennis. A loss at Wimbledon could potentially put Federer on a Borg like path…

Yhe answers to your two questions are
    probably not
    and
    no.

How come you don’t wonder whether Roger Federer is on some kind of performance enhancing drug with him winning everything?

Why can people like you not accept that Rafa can be like that without steroids?

You have no basis at all for this “steroids” claim you’re making.

No, you’re not “on to something”. Talking about doping in sports is necessary but leave the talking to the experts. To make the connection mainly because Nadal looks so muscular? Sure, he’s got some muscles on him but he’s not that huge. Check out pictures of him without his shirt and with shorts on. If you know anything about the human body, genetics (look at the men in the Nadal family) and things like that, there’s no way that you can make the connection with steroids.
The endurance? If he was such a superhuman or on drugs, would he have been so tired in Hamburg? Would he crash down on hard courts? Nadal has grown up on clay, he knows this surface, he moves very well on it but unnatural endurance? LOL Come on, man.

Nadal’s entire body would look differently if he was on steroids.

Judging from your article, you’re a huge Federer fan. Fine. How about respecting his opponent(s) a bit more, though?

Being a Federer fan, I wish to see him raise that cup at Paris. Like Miranda said earlier on, not even Sampras ever won the French Open.

As regards to Nadal, I am pretty sure that he does not use any steroids … otherwise he wins all the other slams and not just the French 😉

what clear IS Rafa still the defending champion at Roland Garros, Federer? Well…. maybe next year? Or next next next year? 🙂

Nasty little bile-filled piece on Nadal, no evidence at all except that he never seems to tire. Perhaps he trains harder?

It’s a pity that you neglected to show some of the above attributes yourself.

You turned what could have been an incisive piece on the various styles of play, etc. into an underhand slur on Nadal’s character. Why?

    How sad!

I found Nadal to have class & style as well ~ and humility. It is too bad when you can’t admit that perhaps someone you particularly admire won’t always be #1. Every champion meets their match at some point in their careers. You sound like a sore loser actually.

I truly believe Nadal is on steroids; he was 16 or 17 and had the body of a much…. older man
My friends and family called him junior steroids.
I hope the Doping Test can improve and catch more cheaters.

What a rubbish and totally biased article!
As has been raised before you describe Nadals performance as a little too superhuman that you suspect he is using drugs, however you don’t seem to very suspicious of your idol, Mr.Federer.
It’s not normal for anyone not to get tired unless they were on drugs you say…….but it’s perfectly normal for someone to win 12 grand slams without so much as breaking a sweat though!
You have no evidence with which to base your claims on, the best you can come up with are examples of other sports stars that got caught using drugs.
Tell me Mr “expert” drug cheat spotter, did you spot Mariano Puerta or Marion Jones BEFORE it was known that they took drugs!
Just think how shattered you would be if one day the tennis world was turned upside down by the shock revelation that Roger Federer admitted taking drugs!

Most here can see this silly article for what it is………perhaps to your discredit you the author can’t!

I just caught this article and hum…. speaking of xenophobic comments *I also notice the xenophobic comments of the American tennis commentators like Mary Carillo, John McEnroe and especially the ingrate Patrick McEnroe is ignored* I think you should have a look at youself in the mirror. I find you pathetic to even imply without knowing the facts that Rafael Nadal is using illicit substances; this is a cheap shot; just have another look at the second to last point against Murray in the 2008 US Open semi and you tell me if Nadal doesn’ t look tired.

This man was raised and trained playing on clay so he knows how to play the surface and he is improving on hard court. I have a nephew who is 13 and trains ALL the time because he wants to be a champion in his sport; he decided at age 6 to put his mind to it and this is what he does. At 16 he will look like a man and at 19, he will look like Nadal at the same age and without steroids.

Finally, Rafael Nadal is doing a fantastic job promoting his sport. He is genuine, has class, dignity, humility and lots of charisma. It is sad some pathetic author feels the need to take him down with some lousy judgement and because of his frustration.

Truly pathetic. I’m sick to death of all you Federer fans and your stupid rumours. Because it’s only bloggers that perpetuate this untruth – I’ve never seen it suggested on a reputable site.

Face it, Rafa’s number one, in all senses. Watch the trophy presentation for the Australian Open again and watch Federer weep. Rafa’s broken him; he got into Federer’s head and gave him a breakdown.

You also seem to forget that players on the ATP are regularly tested for erroneous substances and can you honestly suggest, with all the hard work he’s put into his game over the course of his life, and the last twelve months especially, that he would jeopodise that in any way?

I actually like Federer. But I like Nadal more. He’s dedicated, modest and humble. He’s had to tone down his post-match celebrations three times because Federer gets so damn upset when he loses. He walked up to his greatest rival and put an arm around him to comfort him. Did Federer do that when Nadal was sobbing in the changing rooms after the 2007 Wimbledon final? I think not.

Grow a pair and take a reality pill, mate. Rafa’s the better player right now, and who knows if Roger will ever come back from the crushing defeats Nadal has dealt out.

Okay so by reading this article I can tell you are a Federer fan. That’s okay but being bias isnt. Nadal definately isnt on Steroids. Just because he is completely dominating clay and playing with Federers head doesnt suggest he uses any “performance enhancers”. How stupid of you to bring this up. Did you know that when a player wins a tournament, they get tested straight after? Judging by how well Nadal has been playing lately, he must get tested ALOT! I’m a Rafa fan and I do have loads of respect for Federer (He’s the greatest player of all time) And just because Nadal is so good on clay, doesnt mean he takes drugs to help him be so dominant! He grew up on playing clay, it was the first surface he played on! What the hell do you expect. Nadal is 23 now, that’s not a very good age to mess with drugs. Nadal also has brains okay. He wouldn’t even be stupid enough about thinking about taking Steroids. Your article sucks and you are a bias fag.
