The New Zealand Herald
I had no idea my article “Shades of blackface” was going to still be posted on the New Zealand Herald website even though its been published well over a week ago. I hope people in New Zealand and across the world were able to read it. The article was published almost two weeks ago so if you want to read it again here it is.

I thought your article was on point. I am truly disappointed that they did not pick a mixed race actress or a black actress to play the part. It is a spit in the face of the black actresses who work so hard to get decent roles. An interesting and moving role is presented and it is given to Angelina Jolie. Is it because she is a celebrity humanitarian? What about Rashida Jones? Michael Michele? Those African-American actresses could have done a good job.
I think Mariane Pearl should remember that race in itself is still here and while it may be invisible in some areas of Europe, for the black diaspora, it is alive and breathing.
You are absolutely correct. I think Jolie’s new “image” is part of the reason the American media will not criticize her. Image is power and Jolie’s new saint image seems to her new “victim” card. I think the silence of the white American media about this issue really does demonstrate that racism still thrives in America and especially in Hollywood. The movie role should of went to a biracial or black actress.
